Preakness Picks - June 27, 2009We would have like to included "Rachel Alexandra's" race in the Mother Goose Stakes (G1) at Belmont as part of our Newsletter today, but there was little sense in doing so with the expected 1-5 or 1-9 odds that go with her. Anyway, we wish her good luck. Our menu this afternoon has a total of five races, a trio from Belmont and a pair from Monmouth. There was very heavy rain along the eastern corridor of the Atlantic seaboard late yesterday with Belmont actually canceling its last race due to torrential thunderstorms. Races at both tracks could be "off the turf," and our selections for race No. 5 at Belmont are based on that assumption, with our other four races being scheduled dirt contests. Today's Best Bet is #8 Glimmer Gal in Race #6 at Monmouth Park. Friday's Results: Belmont Park Race #2 Exacta (6-7) $45.60. ![]() Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #4 (BURLEY'S GOLD) - Privately purchased by the IEAH Stables and trainer Richard Dutrow after a near miss in his debut last season at Calder. He lost that contest by a nose, but defeated the talented "Big Drama" by almost three lengths for the second spot. Working well, gets the addition of lasix and Dutrow wins at a 30% clip with his new stock and 50% on the lasix angle. 2nd pick: #1 (Cape Marco) - He's run well in both of his starts, one each here and at Gulfstream. Freshened-up for the past two months by trainer Nick Zito, colt is s win threat. He runs coupled in the wagering with "Golden Jungle". 3rd pick: #7 (Clean Shot) - Shortens-up for his this start after finishing a distant third last out going a mile. Has enough talent to maybe hit the tri. 4th pick: #5 (Cat In The Sky) - Firster by "Sky Mesa" is working sharply and is in a good debut barn (Mike Trombetta 26%). Field drew tough and he'll need to be on his toes to impact here. MONMOUTH PARK Race #3 at 1:50 PM Eastern Top pick: #2 (BEBOB) - Runner continues to move down in claiming price as he tries to find a winning level. Barn (Steve Asmussen) claimed him a while back but gelding hasn't been one of their more successful "halters." This price and distance could do the trick. 2nd pick: #1 (Sneaky Stephen) - Drops down and the last two times he raced at this tag it produced a win. Trainer Terri Pompay had him in a bit "too deep" last out and he's well spotted today for a shot at the win. 3rd pick: #6 (Black Spot) - Freshened-up for the past four monts by a solid barn (Ed Plesa) colt raced well here last year against tougher. Runs today in a career soft spot and is training well for his come back. Win threat if he brings his "A" game. BELMONT PARK Race #4 at 2:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #3 (Wishful Tomcat) - Speedster seeks his third state-bred stakes in a row and has the necessary speed to take this from on, or just of the top if "R. Clear Victory" is intent on the lead. Prospect of an "off" track would only make his task easier. The horse to beat. 2nd pick: #5 (Future Prospect) - In career best shape at this point as he seeks his fifth in a row. Much improved since a switch to the Mike Maker barn in February, gelding comes off his two best races ever, and both were on this surface. 3rd pick: #1 (Z Fortune) - Talented state-bred faced the best in his division last season and ran some very good races. Faces fellow New York-breds for the first time since his two-year-old season when he won both starts easily. Dangerous runner. 4th pick: #4 (Dr. V's Magic) - Not as talented as the top trio, but he has ability and could hit the exotics especially if the pace turned out to be fast/contested. BELMONT PARK Race #5 at 3:05 PM Eastern Top pick: #7 (INTREPID) - Son of "Grand Slam" has tracked and bid in both his starts but flattened just a bit late. Not often you get this barn (Richard Dutrow) at a price but this runner can win this at a nice mutuel. 2nd pick: #2 (Mesa Sunrise) - Training fast for his first start since last November, he has some speed to offer and raced well last year on both turf and diart. Threat if he goes. 3rd pick: #6 (Sommelier Smarty) - Training sharply for his debut, gelded son of "Smarty Jones" looks like a very fast runner by his drills and is in a sharp barn (Chad Brown). Could be a good one. 4th pick: #8 (Eagle Strike) - He finished a rallying third June 13 in what was a pretty good group assembled that day. Race was his first in four months and a slight move forward makes him a player in here. MONMOUTH PARK Race #6 at 3:20 PM Eastern Top pick: #8 (GLIMMER GAL) - Has plenty of speed to offer and she's shown that good early foot despite having some trouble at the start of both her runs. Draws outside of the other contenders and may be able to take them wire-to-wire. 2nd pick: #4 (Chocolate Blush) - Blinkers are added for her second start after filly had a wide trip in her debut after breaking tardily. Clean start and the addition of the "hood" can lead to a big effort. 3rd pick: #6 (Amazing Ariel) - Goes second time out for a barn (John Servis) having a solid meet. Filly showed good speed in her debut and didn't tire until the last 1/16th. She took her share of money in that initial run and that's always a sign that talent is present. Logical improvement should make her a contender.
