Horse Racing Tip Sheets - July 31, 2008

This Sunday at Monmouth "Big Brown" will make his first start since his disastrous bid to become a Triple Crown winner this past June at Belmont. Talented colt will face-off against five or six rivals in the "Haskell" stakes over a distance of 1 1/8th miles. Depending on how the race looks to us, we may or may not include it as part of our Racing Newsletter.

Today we like four races at Saratoga and they're in consecutive order, so we'll skip Del Mar for this one day.

Today's Best Bet is #3 Storming Off in Race #6 at Saratoga.

Wednesday's Results: Saratoga Race #4 Top Pick #7 (Storm Boot Gold) $5.80.
Exacta (7-5) $35.80.
Trifecta (7-5-4) $72.00.

Saratoga Race #9 Best Bet # 7 (Talking Treasure) $5.50.

We also had three nice winners in our selections in our other two races: Saratoga Race # 8 (Carriage Trail) $8.60 and Del Mar Race #3 (Cheryl's Surprise) $22.80, but could not get the second runner to complete the exacta.

Today's Horse Racing Picks:

SARATOGA Race #THREE (2:05 PM Eastern)

(# 8) HATTA FORT - Runner kept nothing but the best company in both England and France as a two-year-old. Group-2 winner at Newmarket last July, he shipped here after the end of the "flat" racing season overseas. Good effort last out sprinting on the Belmont turf and looks ready to show his best today.
(# 4) Redefined - Defeated the top pick by a nose last out and this veteran turf sprinter is as "honest" as they come, giving his all each and every time. Working fast and makes his third start of the year. I have him on an equal par with the "pick", so use him that way.
(# 6) Siphon the Kitty - Speedy shipper gives away a lot of experience to the top pair but he's run well in his first two turf sprints, and is in a very sharp barn (Graham Motion).
(# 2) Snowstalker - He's come back this season a better horse than last. Now with Wayne Lukas, he has been very sharp in his pair this year, and being lightly raced, he could improve a lot more.

SARATOGA Race #FOUR (2:35 PM Eastern)
(# 3) KEY TRIP - Freshened up since June 13th by trainer Dom Galluscio, she returns here at a career low in price. Has some speed and may clear early, which could lead to the maiden win.
(# 2) Isn't That Special - Daughter of "Northern Afleet" has run well in both of her career outings. Has good speed and showed some fighting ability in her latest at Belmont. Makes her third start overall and should offer her best.
(# 1) Prominent - Drops for a crafty barn (Jim "007" Bond) and is also coming back from a late-March race at Gulfstream. This is her first time in a claimer and this field is weak for the level. She's been training here for the past two months.
(# 8) Northern Rodes - Starts are beginning to mount and she's not getting any faster. That said, she fits with this group and draws a "cozy" outside slot from which to stalk and pounce. Dangerous in this field.

SARATOGA Race #FIVE (3:10 PM Eastern)
(# 5) Better Than Swiss - Filly has improved noticeably since being moved to the turf. Daughter of "Tomorrow's Cat" has finished third and second in her last pair going long on the Belmont sod. Shortens up for this and looks well set-up by her connections today.
(# 6) Linda's Kisses - Shortens up after showing the way in a mile race at this level on the Belmont turf. She's hinted at ability and may be coming around for a barn (Howie Tesher), that wins one or two here each season.
(# 2) Barbara's Luckystar - Filly showed good speed in her latest while "in-hand" racing wide. Well-bet in both her career outings, this daughter of "More Than Ready" cost $115,000 at auction and seems set to show whatever she has.
(# 3) Spa Princess - Filly has finished second in three of her four turf sprints at Belmont. Doesn't have enough speed to get involved early so the "trip" is everything for her. Needs clear sailing and a fast/contested pace for something other than a minor award.

SARATOGA Race #SIX (3:45 PM Eastern)
(# 3) STORMING OFF - Colt is superbly spotted by trainer Todd Pletcher in this contest. Son of "Theatrical" has raced well in all of his grass starts and just looks to be too much for this weak group to handle. Wins this from just off the lead.
(# 1) Eldoktori - Gelded son of "Rahy" cost $260,000 as a yearling and was in the barn of Hall of Famer Bill Mott early in his career. Claimed out of his debut by Tony Pecoraro for $50,000, it's taken him several starts to find himself, but he has begun to get the hang of the game. Has some speed, is improving, and draws the hedge.
(# 7) Oldham - Barn (Greg DiPrima) improves just about everything that comes into the stable. Freshened up since a fine second-place finish running for $50K at Churchill in mid-June, he'll race for the new connections for the first time today.
(# 8) Galaxy Tax - Runner has been racing evenly in his recent starts since coming north from Tampa Bay in the spring. Both of his wins are on the grass, and if he brings his best effort, he could hit the exotics.
