Horse Racing Free Picks - July 24, 2008Terrible conditions to race under yesterday as Saratoga opened its 2008 season. Heavy rains gave way to steady, light precipitation as the afternoon moved on. No turf racing was conducted and with the exception of the first race today, a Steeplechase event, I'd be surprised if any will be run this afternoon. We'll limit our plays to the main-track with a pair and also include one from Del Mar and a race from Monmouth. Today's Best Bet is #6 Akin in Race # 1 at Monmouth Park. Wednesday's Results: Saratoga Race #3 Top Pick # 1 (Accredit) $3.60. Arlington Park Race #7 Best Bet #4 (Sugar Mom) $3.60. Del Mar Race # 4 Top Pick # 8 (The Final Roar) $3.40.Exacta (8-7) $11.40. Today's Horse Racing Picks: (# 6) AKIN - Ships down from New York for his second start in five days. Sharp win in his latest at Belmont around this class going seven-furlongs and trainer Richard Dutrow specializes with this quick turn-around. Goes longer today, but his present sharpness should lead to a win. (# 5) Smooth Wind - Leading trainer Bruce Levine reached in and claimed this runner last out. Gelding will be starting for his fourth new trainer in a row and Levine can turn this guy around quickly off a "bad" race for the Patty Farro barn. (# 1) Groovy Kid - Draws the rail for this attempt after just missing last out in his second start vs. winners. Claimed away from Levine by Farro in his near miss, new connections raise him up a bit today. Inside post is a plus. SARATOGA Race #THREE (2:00 PM Eastern) (# 6) GORETTY - Fast and versatile, filly has three wins and a second in her last five races, the lone "poor" outing coming in a stakes. Flexible style will come in handy. The choice for the win. (# 7) Peleliu - Tracked in hand last out and rider appeared confident, but filly was out-finished when asked for run. She runs second off a layoff and may sneak away at a square price. (# 5) Classy Concern - Lightly-raced daughter of "West Acre" has put together two in a row with similar tactics. She's stayed within range and made moves turning for home that led to the wins. (# 2) My Luckey Penney - Deep closer will need a fast/contested pace to pick up more than a minor award. She's been consistently beaten by several entered and would really need to step it up today. For exotics bottoms. SARATOGA Race #SEVEN (4:10 PM Eastern) (# 4) CALL ME TONY - Solid sprinter has been freshened up since trying a pair of stakes during the late spring. Always comes to run and the last time he ran at this condition he was visiting the winner's circle at Aqueduct. (# 6) Temecula Creek - Bob Frankel-trained runner likes this course and is making his second start back off a three-month layoff. He's been brought slowly and carefully by the Hall of Fame conditioner and looks ready to roll. (# 1) Knight's Cross - Four-year-old has really turned it up this year with a trainer switch to the potent Ed Kenneally barn. Capable on either dirt or turf he has speed/stalking ability and in his last (an off-the-turf event)he was most impressive winning at Churchill Downs. (# 7) Roi Maudit - Lightly-raced four-year-old will be making his first start since early January at Gulfstream. Runner put together three wins in a row late last year, including a victory in an overnight stakes at Aqueduct in November. Training fast locally for his return, he resides in the Mott barn and he was the leading-man here last season (27 wins). DEL MAR Race #EIGHT (8:30 PM Eastern) (# 10) THREAT - Big race last out in her second back from a 3 1/2 month layoff. Set/pressed a fast pace at Hollywood and fought gamely while racing "between" runners late to eventually finish third. Filly is improving and has a very fast work on this surface leading up to this start. Stretches-out today and is a big wire-to-wire threat. (# 4) Holladay Dixie - Another who is trying a distance for the first time. Daughter of "Dixie Union" set a fast pace in her last going seven-furlongs at Hollywood before tiring late. Blinkers are removed to help her relax and she too has drilled quickly on this surface. Win contender. (# 9) Asturias - Mare will be trying something other than turf for only the second time in her career. English import has some late kick on the infield and has an experience edge over most. (# 2) Cherryblossommiss - Stretches-out off a single sprint for trainer John Sadler. Trainer is good second time out (18%) and he adds blinkers to this filly's equipment today. Look for a much improved run. Horse Racing Picks Resources:
