Belmont Stakes Handicapping - July 22, 2008

Like the stagnant weather here in the Northeast, we're mired in a bad pattern for the last ten days. Hopefully we'll snap out of it today or when Saratoga opens tomorrow.

Today we'll go to Delaware and Philadelphia Park for two apiece.

Today's Best Bet is #4 So Rich in Race #1 at Philadelphia Park.

Monday's Results: Delaware Park Race #1 Exacta (6-1) $20.40.

Delaware Park Race #5 #6 (Cynthia's Missle) $5.00 to place.

Today's Horse Racing Picks:

PHILADELPHIA PARK Race #ONE (12:25 PM Eastern)

(# 4) SO RICH - Heavily bet in his debut here on July 5, he had traffic problems early and was shuffled back in the muddy going. He has an eye-catching gate drill since and will race with both blinkers and lasix added here. The choice for the win.
( # 6) Stonecoldfreak - Stayed close-up in the same race as the top pick and held well late to finish third. Barn (Tim Salzman) is strong second time out (22%) and he's a serious threat to the top pick.
(# 2) Rough Shot - Drops in half and has both lasix and blinkers added today by a sharp trainer (John Salzman). Colt has a sharp work since his debut and he presumably had blinkers on that morning.
(# 1) Joe For Gin - Did not run much in his debut after not breaking sharply. Two-year-olds can often improve dramatically in their second start and this runner is in a sharp barn (Cathal Lynch).

DELAWARE PARK Race #TWO (1:10 PM Eastern)
(# 6) PAINTED CLOWN - Drops way down after trying $17,500 foes in her latest. Chased a fast pace but was not pushed when outrun for the lead. Drops to a level she has won at before and Scott Lake trainee has the best early speed of all entered. Goes wire-to-wire with a clean break.
(# 5) Fatladyhasntsungyet - Consistent mare (26-7-2-6) and she has a good rating gear which she'll need here. Comes off a win on this course against cheaper and she'll need a bit better to contend for the win.
(# 2) Fouzia - Runs here for the third straight time for a new trainer. Filly has been consistent this year (7-3-0-2) and has done so at various tags and distances. Finishing ability is a big plus in this field.

PHILADELPHIA PARK Race #FOUR (1:35 PM Eastern)
(# 10) WHISKEY SEZ - Veteran has slipped a bit but is still more than capable against this type. Made a strong bid last out at this tag and distance before leveling off. That was his first race since last September and he should be much fitter for this attempt.
(# 5) Tiger Claw - Old-timer has hit the board without winning in five of seven tries since dropping down to this $5000 level. Late-runner fits here and will be making a strong rally in the final furlong.
(# 4) Romero - Speedy type may be the fastest of these early. Capable of fast fractions if sent hard, he'll need to clear in the first quarter and try and hold on late.
(# 2) White Buck - Tried tougher going long on the grass last out with no success. Drops back down and moves back to the main track. Finished second two back under similar conditions as today.

DELAWARE PARK Race #FIVE (2:30 PM Eastern)
(# 1) GULCH FEVER - Dusted $5000 foes three back after shipping down from New York. Claimed that day by Howard Wolfendale, he has tried tougher in his last pair without threatening. Drops back to his claimed level and he also draws the rail. Good shot at a square price.
(# 4) Signature Dancer - Drops in this, his third start since a November layoff. Runner is accustomed to facing better and the last time he ran for this $5000 tag it produced an easy win at Calder.
(# 5) Mysterious Ridge - Raced near the pace and finished evenly in his seasonal debut. Veteran did well here last fall in a series of three starts (3-1-1-1) and a pair were against tougher. Barn (Sandra Slivka) is too good to remain winless (18-0-2-3) much longer.
(# 2) Ouagadougou - Raced close up in his last pair at this price and distance but tired a bit late. He's inside of the other speed types and that should be to his benefit. Exotics player but a win would be a surprise.
