Horse Racing Free Picks - July 17, 2008Del Mar opened it's annual summer meet yesterday and Saratoga will follow next Wednesday, July 23. The combination of the two tracks will be the major focus of our Racing Newsletter until the summers un-official end on Labor Day Weekend. The lone exceptions being Tuesday when Delaware will make up the bulk of the selections. Today's Best Bet is # 1 Ardnavagh in Race # 1 at Belmont Park. Wednesday's Results: Belmont Park Race #2 Top Pick # 3 (Softly Spoken) $5.70. Belmont Park Race #9 Top Pick # 4 (Let's Go Yankees) $4.70. Today's Horse Racing Picks: (# 1) ARDNAVAGH - Classy filly will run in a claimer for the first time today. French import has kept much better company than the rest since breaking her maiden in May of '07 at Churchill Downs. She's run and finished evenly in her first four starts this year, all in allowances. Drop in for a tag should be the elixir she needs. (# 2) Fourth Chapter - Looked good two back breaking her maiden and she's clearly a much better filly on the turf. Raced evenly in her first try with winners last out in a starter-allowance. (# 3) Empress Indy - Exits the same race as the second pick and she held her ground in her first against winners and her first of any kind after a seven-week freshening. Lightly raced and she has room for more improvement. (# 8) Queen of Fashion - Had some problems in her last with a "bump" at the break and she was forced to race in traffic. Has some speed in a race without much on paper and she draws a good post to use it from. BELMONT PARK Race #TWO (1:30 PM Eastern) (# 4) ISN'T THAT SPECIAL - Raced evenly in her first effort here on June 20. Filly stayed near the pace while wide and held her position thru the lane to run a close-up third. Daughter of "Northern Afleet" has a sharp drill since and she may take these from start to finish. (# 3) It'scryptonight - Four-year-old will make her first start since last October and her first since a switch to the barn of Steve Asmussen. Trainer does well with new stock to his stable and is also fine with layoff types. (# 6) Northern Rhodes - Continues to plug along and last out was near the pace in the same race as the top pick. She finished a "neck" in front of that rival, but she doesn't have room for much more improvement having started 11 times already. Factor for sure, she needs to finish better. BELMONT PARK Race #THREE (2:00 PM Eastern) (# 6) LACY HALO - The main speed and she sits in a nice post to avoid traffic at the start and "gun" to the top. Her latest pair show tremendous improvement and represent two of her best ever. Tag is right and she's the horse to beat. (# 1) Ambling Rose - Barn (Enrique Arroyo) is having a great meet and this filly just might give the top pick all she can handle. Fits, is in sharp form, and she draws the rail. The main challenger. (# 2) Most Charming - Claimed last out by Gary Contessa from Bruce Levine for $16,000 in her third start off a three-month layoff. Capable of stalking and finishing well, she should be in a winning spot as they hit the stretch. She'll need to kick it in from there. DEL MAR Race #TWO (5:30 PM Eastern) (# 3) TOUCHDOWN CALL - Gelding hails from one of the best of all the No. California trainers, Bill Morey. Drops to a career low in price and he has a good record in his "poly" races (4-1-1-1). Solid both sprinting and going long, he's coming off a 3 1/2 month freshening and is training well at his homebase of Golden Gate. (# 2) Preachintothechoir - Speedy veteran is the main speed and should secure the rail once the gate opens. Equally adept on turf or dirt he has a win on the Hollywood "poly" at just under this tag, and he went wire-to-wire in that one. (# 6) Devoted Magic - Has some speed and drops slightly in price for this. Lightly raced, he broke his maiden earlier this year at Santa Anita. Gelding from the underrated Juan Garcia has a very sharp work at Santa Anita on July 11 for this attempt. (# 7) Oldtophatandtails - Freshened up for the past two months, he'll be dropping considerably off his pre-layoff races. May be the "key" to the race if he puts pressure on the second pick early, setting it up for "Tochdown". Horse Racing Picks Resources:
