Horse Racing Selection - July 15, 2008In the world of Thoroughbred Horse Racing summer officially arrives tomorrow with the opening of Del Mar, just outside of San Diego. The historic track, "where the turf meets the surf," will be one of our featured tracks for the remainder of the summer season along with Saratoga which opens next Wednesday. Today we'll mix it up a bit with a pair from Delaware and one each from Colonial Downs and Philadelphia Park. Today's Best Bet is # 4 Diamond H in Race # 1 at Delaware Park. Monday's Results: Delaware Park Race #1 Top Pick # 4 (Theycallmetater) $2.40. Delaware Park Race #2 Top Pick #5 (Wild Indygo Brew) $5.20. Delaware Park Race #5 Exacta (5-4) $45.80. Today's Horse Racing Picks: (# 4) DIAMOND H - This colt has shown improvement in his two starts this season after being well bet in his only race last year at two. Sent long in his last, he set all the pace and stayed on until mid-stretch before tiring late. Shortens up for this and he's the horse to beat. (# 1) True Promises - Drops and switches surfaces after a good try on the grass in a maiden special race. Runner could sneak into the exotics at a big price as many of the other runners will be tiring badly. (# 5) Victory Cry - Drops off his career debut at Calder which saw him up near the pace before backing up late. Well bred and from a good stable, the plunge into a claimer should see him run better. DELAWARE PARK Race #FIVE (1:30 PM Eastern) (# 1) YULETIDE - Runner has improved since switching to the turf this season. Well-bred gelded son of "Forest Wildcat" finished second here in a turf sprint in his seasonal bow and then had trouble in a race at Belmont. Comes back to his home base and draws the inside post. He's the choice for the win even if the race is switched to the main-track. (# 2) Praderoso - Gelding has finished second in his last pair and did so once on the turf and once on the main-track. Has good tactical speed, is from a good barn (Graham Motion), and has Dominguez aloft. Main foe on turf or dirt. (# 6) Swift Strike - Rallied late to finish second last out at this level and distance. He's hit the board in seven of 12 overall and two of four on the grass. Latest run was one of his better efforts and barn brings him back quickly. Lots of things to like. Another who is equally adept on turf or dirt. (# 4) Sailaway Pops - Son of "Mizzen Mast" has become a much better horse since he was sent to the turf. Has some speed/stalking ability and was only beaten by a "nose" by "Praderoso" last out. Repeat puts him in the final mix. PHILADELPHIA PARK Race #NINE (3:50 PM Eastern) (# 2) SALTISH - Veteran mare hasn't won a turf sprint, but it's not for the lack of trying. She's (12-0-6-3)and many have been "narrow" defeats. Daughter of "Salt Lake" finished second in her latest at this track and distance off a two-month layoff. She should be a bit "tighter" today and can take this wire-to-wire. (# 6) Blitzensfoxyvixen - Hard-hitter was impressive in winning her first start under trainer Tony Dutrow's tutelage. Race was on this dirt and she'll move to the infield for the second time. Filly had all sorts of problems in her previous grass attempt so it's best tossed out. Her present sharpness is too dangerous to ignore. (# 8) Only Me - Suffered her first defeat last out at Monmouth after a pair of turf-sprint wins to start her career. She brings stalking ability and a good post. Filly must avoid being hung wide. (# 1) Access Fee - Very fast daughter of "Menifee" will be trying the turf for the first time and doing it off a four-month layoff. She's "blitzed" two fields on the dirt in very easy fashion and is working quickly for her come-backer. She gets a class test today. COLONIAL DOWNS Race #FIVE (6:45 PM Eastern) (# 1) TUX N' TALES - Gelding was away slowly in his last and was also in a little deep with starter-allowance foes. Drops back into a straight claimer and this tag ($12,500) is just fine with him. Takes this from just off the lead. (# 6) Swayin - Claimed last out by a very-good barn (Ed Begley), trainer is currently seven for 13 at this meet. Consistent turf sprinter likes to race just off the top. He'll need to out-kick the top pick to have a shot at the win. (# 2) Diamond Wildcat - Lightly campaigned the past two years and there are many gaps in his resume. Fast and likes the turf-sprinting game. Runner will be making his first start since mid-January. In the barn of one of the best on the West Virginia circuit (Jeff Runco), he is working well and has run good races off the bench in the past. Horse Racing Picks Resources:
