Horse Racing Systems - July 13, 2008Today is the running of the $1,000,000 Delaware Park Hdcp. for fillies and mares at a distance of 1 1/4 miles. We'll include this race as one of our four contests in today's newsletter, plus three races from Belmont. Current "Horse of the Year" Curlin ran well in his "turf" debut, but had to settle for second to former Breeder's Cup Mile winner "Red Rocks" in the $500,000 "Man O'War Stakes" at Belmont Park. Race was an oddly run affair with a very fast pace and both the winner and "Curlin" kicking in and moving at virtually the same time with Red Rocks maintaining the two lengths he had on the champ when they launched their rallys. Result probably means that he'll stay on the dirt or "poly" for the remainder of his racing days. Today's Best Bet is # 8 Stormy Catch in Race # 7 at Belmont Park. Saturday's Results: Belmont Race # 2 Top Pick # 7 (Law Enforcement) $4.00. Belmont Race # 4 Exacta (1-3) $12.80. Today's Horse Racing Picks: (# 5) EQUALLY - Filly moves from the turf to the dirt and also shortens up in distance for trainer Bill Mott. She's had trouble of some sort in just about every one of her races and the move here may be to just let her go winging. She is working sharply on the dirt for her first try on that surface. (# 1) Touch Here - Speed shown in her first pair, but she ran poorly as the favorite in start number two and was sent in for a freshening after that attempt. Comes back almost two months later and is working well for this try. (# 2) Asbeautifulasyou - Filly from the barn of Todd Pletcher is making her debut and has some nice drills at Saratoga in preparation for it. Irish-bred miss faces an ordinary lot and could be a runner. (# 7) Splendid Bloom - Comes back from a fall layoff which saw her run competitively in a pair of starts that featured many "future" winners. Works don't indicate much, but her post is fine, and she was bred to be a good one. BELMONT PARK Race #SEVEN (4:05 PM Eastern) (# 8) STORMY CATCH - Daughter of "Stormy Atlantic" has finished second in four of her six turf efforts, one of them coming at this demanding 1 1/8th mile distance on this course. Has good tactical speed and should be running just off the pace today and she can win it from there. (# 1) Offhand Remark - Moves from dirt to turf and goes short to long for the sharp Phil Serpe barn. Trainer does well with grass runners in general and this filly is bred for the turf. Will certainly be up near the front if not on it. Dangerous from the inside post. (# 9) Mizzenkey - Continues to run well in her turf races and and has a lot of experience on this course, just short of this distance. Stalker needs to avoid a wide trip and finish better. (# 2) Donandru's Arctic - Filly by "Take Me Out" showed dramatic improvement when she was sent to the grass in start number two. Raced mid-pack and rallied late to finish second. Draws a nice cozy post and a repeat of her last puts her in the final mix. BELMONT PARK Race #EIGHT (4:35 PM Eastern) (# 1) IT'S NOT FOR LOVE - Speedy filly has finished second in her last two starts at this track, surface, condition, and distance. Draws the hedge and should be able to establish an early advantage on this group. Very tough if that's the case. (# 8) Lanai - Daughter of "Gone West" is improving a bit with each start. Wide in her last pair, one each on dirt and turf she has a work suggesting that she may be ready to show more speed. Good chance at a square price. (# 4) ELUSIVE MOMENT - Improvement on view with the switch to the grass and a training change to Stanley Hough. Has some speed and will be a factor from the opening bell. (# 7) Upper Gulch - Blinkers are added to this filly's equipment in an attempt to induce more speed. She's shown enough ability that a slight move forward would make her a factor here. DELAWARE PARK Race #ELEVEN (5:45 PM Eastern) (# 9) UNBRIDLED BELLE - Millionaire mare is seeking a repeat in this prestigious feature having won last year's running in a bit of a romp. She's been lightly raced and well-spotted her entire career. Today's field is much tougher than last years but she proved once again last out in her seasonal debut that she loves this track in going wire-to-wire in the "Obeah" stakes. That ran her record on this dirt to (5-4-1-0). This is the horse to beat. (# 4) Buy the Barrel - Price play is in the best shape of her life and this stake is run at the home base of her trainer Larry Jones. Working well and she's inside of the other contenders. Could run big at long odds. (# 8) Hysterical Lady - Runner-up in last year's "Breeder's Cup Distaff" is coming off a win in a stake at Churchill on June 14. Great combination of speed/stalking ability and comes into this with some sharp works at home base of Golden Gate. (# 10) Spring Waltz - Post will hurt her a bit as she is a bit light on early speed. She's clearly improving and will be making her first start since coming to the barn of Bob Frankel. She hasn't started since early March, so the others have a recency edge on her.
