Horse Racing Selection - July 12, 2008Current Horse of the Year "Curlin" will make his turf debut today in the 9th Race at Belmont at the $500,000 "Man O' War Stakes (G1). The field is a tough one and if he wins it he'll have to earn it. With the likes of former "Breeder's Cup Turf" (G1) winner "Red Rocks", impressive Irish-import "Sudan" and veteran stakes performer "Better Talk Now". This is an interesting race to watch and it will determine which way Curlin's connections will move later this season. Today's Best Bet is #1 High Brass in Race # 5 at Belmont Park. Friday's Results: Belmont Park Race #1 Top Pick #4 (Determined Loyalty) $7.80. Belmont Park Race #3 Top Pick #1a (Casey's Tribe) $3.90. Belmont Park Race #4 Exacta (5-11) $17.40. Belmont Park Race #9 Exacta (1-7) $102.50. Today's Horse Racing Picks: (# 7) LAW ENFORCEMENT - Sharp race in his seasonal and three-year-old debut on June 7. Chased and battled on the top end through very fast fractions and only gave way late to the talented and in-shape "Megapixel." Should be "tighter" for this and he easily defeated "Spanky" last fall when they met. (# 1) Spanky Fischbein - Talented runner returns from an early February layoff with a new trainer, Chad Brown. Formerly with Todd Pletcher, stakes winning son of "Hook and Ladder" is working well at Monmouth for his comeback. (# 2) Frontier Sky - Experienced and draws a much better post (2) for this than he did in his last (8). Was forced into a mid-pack trip last out when he's clearly much better when near the top. Could hit the exotics at a square price. (# 8) Cal Me Larry - Just missed in his last when out-finished by a deep closer when the pace collapsed late. Stalker enters this in fine shape and draws a good post to employ his tactics from. He'll need the top two to be sub-par for a shot at the win. BELMONT PARK Race #FOUR (2:30 PM Eastern) (# 3) MUCHO MACHO - Bad stumble at the start cost this runner any chance last out, but he still ran gamely to finish second. Talented runner has come back to work sharply since that one, and he's the horse to beat. (# 1) Six Thirteen - Fast runner set a quick pace last out, drew clear and just lasted to break his maiden. Clearly talented, he'll be making his third start off a seven-month layoff and could have more improvement in him. (# 6) He's Solid Gold - Looked good when breaking his maiden at Aqueduct late last year. The trouble is that he hasn't raced since. Well-bet in both his appearances, he is working steadily at Saratoga for his return. Runner would need to be really sharp to defeat the top two. BELMONT PARK Race #FIVE (3:00 PM Eastern) (# 1) HIGH BRASS - Clearly improving with racing, he ran his best race ever last out on this course at six furlongs. Trainer Allen Jerkens adds lasix today, a 23% winning move by the Hall of Famer. The choice for the win. (# 6) All Verses - Runner has had adventurous trips in his firt pair of '08 starts. Bounced around in his seasonal debut and a very wide trip last out hurt his chances. Goes better here. (# 3) Hostile Takeover - Fields most experienced runner has hit the board in seven of 13 lifetime start and two of four on the grass. Has good positional speed and is a factor from close range here. (# 9) Westward Go - Ran well in his first start for trainer Dave Donk going a distance of ground. Shortens up for this, but he draws a cozy post to rally from and he has the talent to be competitive here. BELMONT PARK Race #EIGHT (4:30 PM Eastern) (# 7) ALABAMA MAN - Son of "Dixieland Band" showed speed in his debut sprinting on June 14. Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin sends him long in start No. two and he has strong stats with that move (28%) to go along with his reputation with second-time runners (29%). Can go wire-to-wire or win from just off the top. (# 10) Just a Warning - He moves to an outside post after having been saddled with the inside in his last pair. Has speed/stalking ability and will be making his third start following a five-month layoff. Should receive a trouble-free journey with every chance as they turn for home. (# 4) Zambezi Warrior - Colt has been entered five straight times on the turf, but because of weather-related issues has only run once on that surface. Has some speed and fits well with this group. (# 2) Storm Harbor - He ran a good-looking race last out when sent to the turf for the first time. Showed some speed and held his position in an encouraging performance. Blinkers are added today and he is a big factor. BELMONT PARK Race #TEN (6:00 PM Eastern) (# 8) GRANTOR - Son of "Broken Vow" raced in traffic and held his position in his first race since last September. In a winning barn (Mike Hushion) and trainer has a fine 20% winning rate with second-time back runners. Can upset this at a square price. (# 9) Smart Enuf - Stalked, but could not offer much of a bid in his last when favored in a race on the "Belmont Stakes" under card. He's had almost five weeks since that effort and should run well today. (# 1) Nolite Timere - Latest was good as he finished a close-up fourth to a winner who came right back to take another here Wednesday. He can run all day, so the nine-furlong distance should not pose a problem. (# 6) Marscaponi - He's improving his overall performance as he races more and his fine third place finish last out puts him right in the mix here. Horse Racing Picks Resources:
