Handicapping Preakness - July 05, 2008Today we have a five-spot of races for selections and analysis, all from beautiful Belmont Park. Today's Best Bet is # 5 Vacare in Race # 4 at Belmont Park. Friday’s Results: Monmouth Park Race #4 Exacta (1-4) $23.80. Belmont Park Race #3 Exacta (4-7) $33.40. Monmouth Park Race #9 Top Pick #5 (J Be K) $2.80. Belmont Race #7 second #7 (Any Limit) $13.60. Today's Horse Racing Picks: (# 7) LOST GOING HOME - Speedy type has his price cut in half today by trainer Mike Hushion. Both of his return races off a five-month layoff were in the mud. Can take this with a stalking trip just off the leaders. (# 2) Remorse - Tired in his last against better after setting/pressing the pace until late stretch. Drops back to the price ($10,000) of his last two victories and he's a win contender. (# 5) Halo's Tiger - Another who raced against tougher in his latest and in his previous try at this price finished second beaten by less than a length. Mid-pack type would like it fast and crowded up front. (# 4) Hana Highway. - Makes his second start for the Scott Lake barn off a claim on May 24. Ran evenly against better in his first for the new connections and drops back to the purchase price. BELMONT PARK Race #TWO (1:30 PM Eastern) (# 5) BAD DECISION - Takes the all-important drop into a claimer off a pair of tries at the maiden-special level. Chased a fast pace in last before tiring in the last eighth. Gelding has a sharp work since his latest and is well spotted by his connections to pick up his first win. (# 1) Western Call - Makes his third start off a seven-month layoff and drops down to $25,000 for the first time. Draws the rail, has some tactical speed and should offer his best today. (# 7) Wanna Winna - Veteran maiden has finished second in four of his last five, all at this $25,000 price tag. Likes to race mid-pack and commence a rally turning for home. Needs to find a little extra late. BELMONT PARK Race #THREE (2:00 PM Eastern) (# 4) RED HOT DAWN - Makes his second start off an Enrique Arroyo claim and ran a good second in his first for the new connections. Well-bred and lightly raced, he has speed/stalking ability and can take this by shadowing the rail runner. (# 3) Defrereoftheheart - Sharp in his return race off a 7-month layoff. Chased from a wide post and held his position well to finish third. He's won in the past in his second off the bench and he's a win contender. (# 1) Secret Socks - Primed and ready from his rail post to try a theft attempt. Gelding has never before raced this low and his efforts at just above this tag ($20,000) are all solid. Training sharply for this and he could be a square price. BELMONT PARK Race #FOUR (2:30 PM Eastern) (# 5) VACARE - Had a very wide trip in her seasonal bow in the "Just A Game (G1)" stakes on the Belmont Stakes under card. To her credit, she held well, but just lost too much ground. Major stakes winner should be much sharper in her second run back. (# 2) Paris Winds - Nice race-mare always comes to run and gives her all. What else can you ask? Irish import by the fine sire, "Galileo" has been sharp in all her U.S. races (4-2-2-0) and just missed in a small stakes at this track and distance last out. Bill Mott-trained runner has some good tactical speed and can finish strongly. The main danger. (# 4) Chestoria - This New York-bred has a very bright future both in state-bred and open stakes for the rest of her career. Bred for the turf, lightly raced, and she's been carefully spotted in her eight race career. Late on the scene type fits, but doubt she can defeat the top pick. BELMONT PARK Race #NINE (5:00 PM Eastern) (# 3) INDIAN BLESSING - Two-year-old filly champ last season obviously has distance limitations, but in these sprints she can "let it rip" and run them off their feet early. Working superbly since her second place finish to "Zaftig" in the "Acorn" (G1) she's the filly to catch and beat. (# 7) Palanka City - Daughter of "Carson City" has been freshened up since winning the "Miss Preakness" stakes on May 16. That win was her third in a row and second straight in a sprint stakes. Working well at Prairie Meadows for this and her regular rider Chris Emigh comes along with her. (# 5) Secret Gypsy - Impressed by her debut win at Saratoga last year but did not race again until Derby Day. Thrown right to the wolves in making her seasonal bow, she showed speed in the "La Troienne" (G3) before tiring late. Followed that up with a third place finish in the "Dogwood" (G3). Training in fast fashion for this, the waters are still pretty deep here. Horse Racing Picks Resources:
