Kentucky Derby Handicapping - July 03, 2008Today's menu consists of a total of four races for selections and analysis, two each from from Belmont and Monmouth Park. Today's Best Bet is # 5 Miss Bodine in Race # 2 at Belmont Park. Today's Horse Racing Picks: (# 4) PELELIU - Reported to be a runner from day one, filly was bet accordingly in most of her starts. Freshened up since a poor run in late March, she's training very sharply for the Wesley Ward barn. Trainer won a race yesterday with a California shipper and this filly is the horse to beat. (# 7) Classy Concern - Sharp win last out in her second off a seven-week freshening for the Pat Reynolds barn. Race was her best ever and lightly-raced filly could easily have more improvement in her. Dangerous rival. (# 2) Devi - Filly has finished in the money in all three of her '08 starts. Has a hint of speed and should secure the rail. Trainer Ralph D'Alessandro adds blinkers today to induce a bit more speed. BELMONT PARK Race #TWO (1:30 PM Eastern) (# 5) MISS BODINE - Firster from the powerful Baffert barn was working up a storm in California before shipping. She has a nice drill over the local surface to get familiar with it and looks ready to go. (# 1 and 1a) Wildcat Wonder and Floating Heart - We'll take either half of this entry, or preferably both as our second pick. "Wildcat" has been in steady training at Saratoga and attracts stable rider Johnny V. "Floating" has Coa aboard and has a nice gate work on June 9. (# 4) Fast Tigress - Debut runner from John Kimmel has a pair of back-to-back sharp drills a week apart on June 6 and 13. Prado is aloft this filly by "Hold That Tiger". MONMOUTH PARK Race #FOUR (2:10 PM Eastern) (# 2) GHAZI THE GREAT - Moves back to the grass after running in an "off the turf" contest here last out. Had the rail that day and had to be used hard early. Previous pair of grass races saw him show speed from two poor post positions (10 and 11). Should run well at a square price. (# 6) Trippin Up - Moves back to the grass where he ran well last season at two. Probably needed his last pair (both on the dirt) and trainer Bruce Alexander also drops him in class today. Dangerous off his "turf" form in '07. (# 1) Palace Boxer - Blinkers are added today by trainer Roy Lerman. Raced evenly in his last at Belmont against tougher and he draws the hedge today. Colt by "Lido Palace" is coming off his best start to date. (# 4) Rollin the Dice - Son of "Grand Slam" will try the grass for the first time today after eight dirt efforts. Has some tactical speed, but will need to finish better than he has in his '08 races. Colt was sharper last year. MONMOUTH PARK Race #SEVEN (3:35 PM Eastern) (# 4) NORTHERN COMMAND - Fast runner was a prompt favorite in his first on this surface after shipping here from Suffolk Downs. Claimed out of that race, he's "wheeled" back in less than three weeks for the new connections with a $2500 raise in price. The horse to catch and beat. (# 7) Oswyn - The main danger has been a solid runner since he came to the track (13-1-7-3). Claimed two back by a sharp barn (John Rigattieri) he ran a fine second, first out for the new connections when raised in price. Win contender. (# 1) Cinemud - Showed speed in his first here after shipping from Calder before tiring late. Drops $2500 in price and draws the rail.
