Horse Racing Free Picks - January 31, 2012Aqueduct is "dark" until tomorrow, so today's East Coast racing newsletter will once again concentrate on Parx Racing (Philadelphia Park). This afternoon's Best Bet is #3 Holy Invader in Race #3. ![]() Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #2 (CELTIC PRIDE) - Stretch-out sprinter finished fourth last out at this price going 7 furlongs in a race common to several others. 4-year-old son of "Giant's Causeway" has bet in his last three starts and this colt draws the rail for this attempt. Speed/stalker is bred for this added distance and is the horse to beat. 2nd pick: #4 (Placentia Bay) - Nice effort last out saw him up and on the pace from start to finish and miss by a head after a stretch long duel. He defeated "Celtic" that day and is an obvious threat again today with a repeat of that performance. 3rd pick: #5 (Flash of Reign) - Exits the same race as the top two picks and after racing close-up early he tired during the stretch run. Stretches-out this afternoon, gets the addition of blinkers, and leading rider Carmouche stays loyal. 4th pick: #7 (Vander Gelder) - Not a win candidate, but this colt does have some talent, and could grab a small share at a rather big price. PARX RACING (Philadelphia Park) Race #3 at 1:15 PM Eastern Top pick: #3 (HOLY INVADER) - Lightly-raced colt by "Invasor" finished second in a pair of starts last fall at Delaware Park, both going around two-turns. Trainer Tony Dutrow gave him a two month break beginning in early Nov. and sent him to Aqueduct for his return start on Dec. 31. Colt had an outside post and tired after chasing the pace. Dutrow has worked him twice since and will drop him into a claimer for the first time. Blinkers are removed after a one race experiment and he's the horse to beat. 2nd pick: #1 (Distinct Honor) - Stretch-out sprinter has the rail and last out finished a solid second at this price going 6.5 furlongs. He has good early speed and draws the rail, a dangerous combination. 3rd pick: #5 (Alex's Mojo) - Colt missed by a head here on Dec. 18 racing for half this price and was claimed that afternoon by Bob Helmetag. New barn has freshened him up for almost 7 weeks and will add blinkers. PARX RACING (Philadelphia Park) Race #4 at 1:40 PM Eastern Top pick: #2 (FLOR DE AMELIA) - Filly has a good overall record (7-2-3-0) and last out she was a 15-length winner racing for $10K going 6 furlongs. Last fall she finished second in a $150K stakes on this surface and is the horse to beat. 2nd pick: #6 (Princess Sapphire) - Daughter of Vindication raced evenly here last out facing tougher in her first start off a trainer change to "Lupe" Guerrero. Drops in class, shortens-up in distance, and is a win candidate. 3rd pick: #5 (Blond Valentine) - Price play tired badly in an allowance contest on Jan. 10, her first start in two months. Has talent, drops down, and can factor at a nice price. 4th pick: #4 (Tippy Toes) - She went wire-to-wire last out racing for $10K going two turns. Nicely-bred filly started her career in the barn of Todd Pletcher and has some talent. PARX RACING (Philadelphia Park) Race #10 at 4:15 PM Eastern Top pick: #3 (GOLDEN RAPTOR) - Once classier type hasn't run since early Sept. at Saratoga and is sent here from New York by trainer Linda Rice. Drops to a new low, has fine early speed, and gelding is the horse to beat if ready. 2nd pick: #6 (Perky Judge) - He finished a pace-setting second two weeks ago racing for $10K, his first start since Nov. of 2010. Drops slightly and he's an obvious threat if he avoids a possible "bounce". 3rd pick: #7 (Closing Man) - Florida invader finished second last out at Tampa at this price to a runner that came back to win again. Consistent, has a flexible style, and is a win candidate. 4th pick: #4 (Smokem If U Gotem) - He raced evenly last out at this tag and distance, and had a tough outside post (12th of 12). Draws better today and think he'll run well at a square price. 5th pick: #2 (World Record) - He has a strong closing kick and was only beaten a 1/2 length at this price and distance on Jan. 10. Capable, and a fast pace would help out his style.
