Handicapping The Kentucky Derby - January 30, 2008With racing back to a bit of normalcy, we'll offer four races today, three from the "Big A" and one from Gulfstream Park. Yesterday we hit the exacta (6-8) for $22.60 as well as the trifecta (6-8-3) for $58.40 both at Tampa Bay's 10th race. Today's Best Bet is #2 Icy Heart in Race # 4 at Aqueduct. Tuesday's Results: Tampa Bay Race #6 exacta second pick with top pick (1-7) paid $23.20.
Tampa Bay Race #10 Top Pick winner #6 (Prosico) paid $8.40. Exacta (6-8) paid $22.60. Trifecta (6-8-3) exact order paid $58.40. Today's Horse Racing Picks: (# 1) MR. BOGART - Part of a Gary Contessa trained entry. Faced $50,000 opposition sprinting in the slop in his first race off a seven-week freshening and ran evenly. May have needed that one and should go much better in his second off the bench. The choice for the win. (# 5) My Song - Stretches-out off a lone sprint for trainer Jim "007" Bond. Son of "Behrens" took some money sprinting that day and finished evenly. Has a pair of drills since and his sire's offspring are better going a distance. (# 8) Ballado Alert - Showed good speed in last, his first try over a distance of ground. Moves a bit farther out in the gate and may have to be used harder to achieve the lead. (# 1a) Press Only - The second half of the Contessa entry draws his second tough post in a row. Wide in his last while showing some speed, trainer drops him in value and this field is decidedly weaker than the one he just faced. Winner of that race has since won another, and the second-place finisher broke his maiden here this past Sunday. AQUEDUCT Race #FOUR (1:50 PM Eastern) (# 2) ICY HEART - Had some traffic problems in last when he had to steady around the half-mile pole. In his two previous runs he chased the pace while wide. Appears to be the speed nearest the rail and gets a hustling rider today (Maragh). (# 4) Ferdi's Prince - Set a slow pace while on the lead in last and just failed to hold on. That was his first try at this lower claiming tag and it certainly made him more competitive. Repeat of it makes him a win candidate. (# 3) Dual Citizenship - Didn't run well in his latest when the second choice easily handled him. Comes in with a sharp work on Jan. 25 so maybe he'll be much sharper. (# 7) Straight Blush - Colt has had a lot of tries (17) without getting the job done. Trainer Leah Gyarmarti adds blinkers again in an attempt to get some more speed out of him. May offer some exotics value. AQUEDUCT Race #NINE (4:10 PM Eastern) (# 9) FORTUNE FADED - Has only made a pair of appearances and they came about seven weeks apart. Gelded son of top sire "Catienus" attracted Prado in his November debut and finished a fine third despite racing a bit erratically. Broke slow in start number two on Jan. 5 and still split the field in a good performance. Trainer Rich Schosberg has given him a pair of sharp drills since the last race and enlists Dominguez to ride him today. Trainer/jockey combo is a strong one, as they have won with seven of their last 17 together. (# 2) Eassa - Firster from the Asmussen barn has been with the secondary strings at Evangeline Downs and Sam Houston. Last three preparatory works were at Gulfstream before they shipped this New York-bred north. Barn does well with it's firsters (19%) but is better known for second-out success. (# 7) Grand Treasure - Had a adventurous debut ducking-out at the start and racing wide thereafter. Son of "Grand Slam" did well to finish a close-up fifth. Normal improvement, combined with a clean trip, should make him a contender. (# 1) Justin P. - Paraneck runner is part of a coupling here. Cutsback in distance off a pair of longer attempts. Made up some late ground on the Jan. 19 and comes back quickly for this, his third off the bench. GULFSTREAM PARK Race #NINE (5:10 PM Eastern) (# 6) DON'TQUESTION IT - Ran well from a wide post on a yielding course in his turf debut here on Jan. 6. Has a pair of sharp works since for the Catalano barn and looks well setup to break his maiden. (# 1) R Facilitatar - Has a couple of sharp rsces on the grass at the $40,000 level at Calder. Trainer Steve Towne drops him down to $25K today and that combined with his hedge draw makes him a win candidate. (# 4) Demetria Express - Pair of tough posts (10 and 12) have hurt his chances in his two grass appearances. Draws much better today and drops from $40k to $25K. (# 2) Oldham - Takes the big drop from MSW competition into the claiming ranks. From a good barn (Frank Brothers) and he gets Prado to take the mount. Should offer his best against these.
