Belmont Stakes Handicapping - January 29, 2008Tampa Bay is the only good weather option for today's racing menu, so we'll go there for four races. Today's Best Bet is #10 Once More in Race #1 at Tampa Bay Downs. Monday's Results: Gulfstream Park Race #4 Top Pick Winner #8 (Maria's Charm) paid $4.00Other two top picks finished second. Today's Horse Racing Picks: (# 10) ONCE MORE - Makes her third start of her current form cycle and she has shown improvement in the second run back. Top barn (Tom Proctor) drops her in value again today and she looks setup well to get her first win. She needs to break alertly and hustle along to avoid a wide trip. (# 4) Fresh Call - Filly has by far the most starts (21) without getting it done. Only other time she raced for this $8K tag led to a second-place finish. In-shape runner faces a very questionable group. (# 2) Ogerinthecourt - Well bet in her first two starts at this meet, she has shown some speed and finished a bit better in last. Draws a good post and would expect her to be sent hard. (# 7) Rainbowis Gold - Well backed in her return from a two-month layoff and also her first start for trainer Lynne Scacce. Pace was a bit slow in that one and she needs to pick it up some. TAMPA BAY Race #SIX (2:40 PM Eastern) (# 7) CAROLINA BELLE - Invader from Great Britain is well bred and has shown talent in England on both the Lingfield Polysurface and on the grass. Beat colts in her maiden win, then was overmatched in a prestigious stakes at York. In a good barn (Eddie Kenneally) working steadily, and goes first-time Lasix. (# 1) Claudia's Flame - Makes her first start for trainer Dale Bennett who continues to do superior work here. Daughter of "Flame Thrower" won her only start last November at Hawthorne when well-bet. Draws the rail and is coming off a two-month freshening. Very dangerous. (# 3) This Smoke Did it - Looks like the main speed as she's capable of going a :45 and change half. Barn has had many more minor awards at this meet than wins. She has to be caught. TAMPA BAY Race #EIGHT (3:40 PM Eastern) (# 8) GOLDEN CELEBRITY - Claimed out of her last by Jim Mattingly for $25K. New connections raise her to $50K today but her figures indicate that she should fit very well with these. She has finished second in her last five starts, all at Calder, but she has just failed in most. Good shot to finish the job here. (# 10) R Vicarious Girl - Filly drops into a straight claimer for the first time since her maiden win last April. Has faced tougher since, and in general has performed well. Has some tactical speed and need not be too far of the lead, and that positional gear will help her escape this poor post draw. (# 3) Hurricane Nikki - Deep closer got a fast pace in her Tampa debut that helped her late kick out. Closed in tandem with the eventual winner who out-finished her down the lane. Pace may be a bit slower today, so she'll need to work harder. (# 6) Kickin N Screamin - Has performed well in all her grass starts. Claimed two back by an underrated barn (Chuck Simon) she ran an excellent race in her Tampa debut with blinkers on for the first time. Finished second in her first start in two months. Repeat puts victory within her reach. TAMPA BAY Race #TEN (4:30 PM Eastern) (# 6) PROSICO - Working swiftly for his winter debut, son of "Siphon" has been lightly raced and gingerly handled by top trainer Dale Bennett. Turf sprinting seems to be his game and in this competitive field he may be a good price. (# 1) Not Acclaim - Veteran has eight wins sprinting on the turf and he's coming off a top try at Calder on Jan. 2. In the Kirk Ziadie barn and he draws the shortest way home. (# 8) Weigilia - Million-dollar stakes winner draws a tough field for his first start in five months. Working swiftly at Gulfstream he'll need to be on his toes and ready to give his best. (# 3) Salute The Count - Ran evenly at the Fair Grounds on Dec. 14, and this well-travelled veteran is a professional grass sprinter.
