Handicapping The Preakness - January 28, 2008

Today we have a selected four races, three from Gulfstream Park and one from the Fair Grounds.

Yesterday was another great day at the track as we hit the exacta, trifecta and the superfecta in the second race at Gulfstream Park. Please see full results below.

Today's Best Bet is # 3 Carson City Dude in Race # 3 at the Fair Grounds.

Sunday's Results: Gulfstream Park Best Bet Winner #9 (Bon Marie) paid $6.20. Exacta Best Bet with second pick (9-8) paid $36.20. Trifecta (9-8-6) exact order paid $135.60. Superfecta (9-8-6-2) exact order paid $236.70.

Today's Horse Racing Picks:

FAIR GROUNDS Race #THREE (2:25 PM Eastern)

(# 3) CARSON CITY DUDE - Gelded son of "Carson City" has shown speed in all three races to date for top conditioner Michael Stidham. Goes third off a layoff and trainer drops him in half today, from $50k down to $25K. Blinkers are removed and everything looks in place.
(# 4) Real Cat Daddy - Another who halves in value for this, but he will be doing so off a two-month layoff. Good barn (Ralph Nicks) and he enlists Albarado, so it looks like they're ready off the rest.
(# 1) Charlie's Academy - Stayed close before tiring late on Jan. 14 for this price. Race was his first in five months, so he could easily do better in this.
(# 7) Not in My Backyard - Hasn't shown much, but he should be fit off the recent distance try on Dec. 29. Not a win candidate, but he could impact the tri at a good price.

GULFSTREAM PARK Race #FOUR (2:40 PM Eastern)
(# 8) MARIA'S CHARM - Nafzger-trained colt ran well in the fall at Churchill and Keeneland without getting the job done. Working steadily and he draws a good post for the distance. Can take this with a stalking trip.
(# 4) Joppa Flats - Veteran has faced off against some tough customers in his career without getting the maiden win. Showed some late interest here on Jan. 13, his first race in three months. Drew the rail in the slop for that race going six furlongs, and on a fast track today he gets his favorite distance (seven furlongs).
(# 7) Gold Brew - Mott runner ran a fine second in his first start since last March and first ever in blinkers on Jan. 2. Working well for this, he is a serious win candidate.
(# 5) For Michael's Dad - Hasn't been seen since last May at Churchill Downs. Was bet in his initial pair and ran well in his debut finishing second on Kentucky Oak's Day in the last race on the card. Race was in the mud, but he was not as sharp in start No. 2. Working well for a good trainer(Dale Romans) and Prado takes the ride.

GULFSTREAM PARK Race #FIVE (3:10 PM Eastern)
(# 2) SALLE de BAIN - Mott-trained filly has a pair of solid return races that should have gotten her in shape off a Sept. layoff. Sent long on the grass and then seven furlongs on the dirt, both at the MSW level. Hall of Fame trainer drops her into a claimer, sends her back to the turf, and she has a very sharp work on Jan. 25.
(# 1) Teemer - Very poor trip in last, being forced to circle the field while five wide. Filly did well to get up for fourth. Repeat run makes her dangerous.
(# 6) Ay Papi - Finished second in an "off the turf" event last out when dropped in for a claiming price for the first time. Moves to the grass and Prado sees fit to reride her. Dangerous opponent.
(# 8) More Memories - Clever outfit (John Kimmel) is off to a slow start here, but don't ever underestimate his ability, especially with turf runners. Filly gets to try the grass today, and also runs over a distance of ground. Johnny V.'s presence is duly noted.

GULFSTREAM PARK Race #EIGHT (4:40 PM Eastern)
(# 1) VOLOS - Started his career on the West Coast in the top barn of Brian Koriner. Showed speed in a pair at Del Mar in the summer and then was sent to Steve Asmussen's barn at Hawthorne. Flashed some speed in a fall start there and now finds his way here. Most importantly, this will be his first time tagged and he is working well for this. Wire-to-wire threat from the rail.
(# 3) Dixie Savior - Makes his first start on a conventional dirt track after trying grass and Woodbine's polytrack surface. This is his initial appearance with a "tag" on his head and he may be set for his best.
(# 2) Cowens - The third member of the "first time tagged" club hasn't shown much to date. He would need a major move forward to contend for anything other than a minor award, but he should be a square price.
(# 4) Brookey - Professional maiden tends to run evenly and settle for minor awards. That's fine if you're playing tris and/or supers.
(# 5) Stag Runner - Like most of trainer Azupura's runners, it's taking him a while to come around. Ran fine two back, then stumbled at the start from a poor post (12) in a long grass event. That race may set him up well for his best yet.
