Triple Crown Horse Racing - January 26, 2008

On Friday Oaklawk Park was cancelled due to cold and ice. We had a winner with our Best Bet on Aqueduct race #3 (#7 Armonk) which paid $4.70.

Today, with the Sunshine Millions Stakes card (Gulfstream Division) we'll offer three of their big events to go along with a pair from Aqueduct for a total of five races.

At press time it had not yet been determined whether Santa Anita was going to be able to present their half of the "Millions" card.  They were forced to cancel both Thursday's and Friday's cards due to heavy rains and the resultant drainage problems that have been constant since the installation of their artificial surface.

Best Bet is # 5 Blitzing in Race # 8 at Gulfstream Park.

Today's Horse Racing Picks:

AQUEDUCT Race #ONE (12:30 PM Eastern)

(# 4) TY'S RIDGE - Think his best races are when he stalks a bit before giving his best. In last start he went right to the top at this condition and distance, set an honest pace and tired in the last 1/16th. Think he's the horse to beat in here.
(# 1) Six Guns - Had a sub-par outing in latest, but had several good tries prior to that. Gets to save all the ground and could be a strong late factor.
(# 5) Will Never Bend - If you throw out his start two back when he stumbled, his game has been pretty steady over the past several months. Just possible he could impact the exotics at a decent price.
(# 8) New York Moon - Last in the mud is basically a toss, as he broke poorly from an outside post and basically ran around the track. Previous pair showed some progress and he could rebound with a much better effort. Dominguez abandins this Contessa trainee for the top choice.

AQUEDUCT Race #SIX (2:50 PM Eastern)
(# 2) LEGENDS WAY - Comes back quickly for this attempt after having some traffic problems in his latest. Winner, a stretch-out sprinter went unchallenged in that affair. Drops in price and cutsback in distance for the Contessa barn. Rail draw should help him out.
(# 1) Huge City - Flashed speed in his last over a month ago. Has a pair of works since, and he drops 10K for this attempt. A slight move forward would make him dangerous.
(# 3) Pacific Sun - Goes second off a layoff and drops from 25 to 15K for the Schosberg barn. Flashed a bit of speed in that return run and Dominguez sees fit to give it another go.
(# 4) Freedom Isn't Free - Has been running evenly in his races since coming back from a Sept. layoff. Has slid down the ladder in the past year but could still be competitive with these.

GULFSTREAM PARK Race #SEVEN (4:00 PM Eastern)
(# 6) BENNY THE BULL - Has certainly become an outstanding sprinter after being a bit of an under-achiever early in his career. He's working very fast at Palm Meadows training center for this, and there appears to be enough questionable speed to help his closing tactics.
(# 2) Mach Ride - The horse to fear. Has become a consistent performer at the top levels. Seedy type can also stalk and he has a recent top race over this track, and that's a big edge in his favor.
(# 4) Finallymadeit - Finished a couple of lengths shy of Mach Ride in the Mr. Prospector here on Jan. 5th after being involved in a fast pace duel. Has a huge work coming into this.
(# 10) Santana Strings - Would love this to be seven furlongs instead of six, but that's not the case. Has a shot at the exotics if the pace is fast/contested. Fields lone deep-closer may rally enough to grab a share.

GULFSTREAM PARK Race #EIGHT (4:35 PM Eastern)
(# 5) BLITZING - Her last pair have been outstanding, and they both came after 7 week layoffs. Filly looks to have a lot of talent and ability and has run well at three different tracks. Has a flexible style and that will come in handy here. The choice for the win.
(# 1) American County - Comes in fresh, training well, draws the rail and gets the services of Mr. Prado. Filly has talent, but the top choice has defeated her before and has a recency edge on her.
(# 7) Validain - Has done little wrong in her two starts. Ran second in a November unveiling at Churchill when she was well-bet but came up a bit short. Easily and promptly delivered as the 3-5 chalk at Calder on Dec. 23rd in start number two. Blinkers went on that day and she was very impressive.
(# 9) Lovehi - Fields most experienced runner is a proven stalker and that could certainly land her in the exotics at a square price.

GULFSTREAM PARK Race #TEN (5:30 PM Eastern)
(# 7) SOLDIER'S DANCER - Strong credentials as this newly turned 4yr.old takes on mostly older runners. The 12 furlong distance of his last may not have been to his liking. He has a good record at this 1 1/8 mile distance(5-2-2-0). Strong finisher in a race with a questionable pace scenario, should run a big one.
(# 1) War Monger - One of a pair from trainer Bill Mott and they will race uncoupled. This lightly raced son of War Chant has a tremendous amount of ability but has been limited to only 6 career races up to this point. Training well, has the hedge, some tactical speed, and has a good shot at a square price.
(# 6) Icy Atlantic - Pletcher veteran can still bring a good game, but has lost some of his positional speed that he had earlier in his career. Fits and should run well.
(# 4) Add Heat - Good runner generally settles for minor awards, but his stalking style may play out well in this curious gathering. His latest at Santa Anita from a pure figure stand-point was one of his best.
