Us Horse Racing Picks - January 21, 2008

With today being a Holiday, we'll offer five races this Monday from Aqueduct and Oaklawn Park. Yesterday we grabbed the trifecta (3-4-2) from the fourth at Aqueduct good for $116.50. Please see full results below.

Today's Best Bet is # 3 Wild Union in Race # 1 at Aqueduct.

Sunday's Results: Aqueduct Race #4 Best Bet winner #3 (Crane Bay) paid $5.30. Exacta (3-4) paid $33.00. Trifecta (3-4-2) paid $116.50.

Aqueduct Race #5 Top Pick winner #7 (Shelby's Memory) paid $2.70. Exacta (7-2) paid $9.00. Trifecta (7-2-3) paid $17.20.

Aqueduct Race #9 Top Pick Winner #2 (Fashion Queen) paid $4.00.

Today's Horse Racing Picks:

AQUEDUCT Race #ONE (12:30 PM Eastern)

(# 3) WILD UNION - Speed was especially good on this traditionally speed-favoring inner-strip the past two days. This colt is sent long by the Pletcher barn off a sprint on Jan. 4. Ran evenly and finished third that day and it was his first run in two months. Lead looks to be his and barn is 24% on the stretch-out move.
(# 1) Makeithappencaptain - Claimed three back by the Miceli barn, he has finished fourth in his two efforts for the new connections. Stretches back out off the recent six-furlong race and he draws the all-important rail. Had some promise at one time.
( # 5) Road Not Traveled - Contessa runner ran a fine third last out from a wide post (9). Ran well against better last season. Fits at this tag and has some dangerous late kick.

AQUEDUCT Race #TWO (12:55 PM Eastern)
(# 5) DOUBLE OR NOTHING - Goes long for the first time in his career. Speedy/stalking type is coming out of his three best races ever and did them in progression. All he needs is an intelligent ride.
(# 2) Loaves and Dishes - Broke his maiden in latest for the Levine barn and the addition of Lasix and blinkers put him over the top. Faces winners for the first time and may be this good.
(# 3) Queen's Mandate - Very sharp in his maiden breaking Florida finale. Claimed that day by the sharp Canet barn, he makes his New York debut coming off of his best race ever.

OAKLAWN PARK Race #FIVE (4:05 PM Eastern)
(# 7) CHARMED BY CHARLIE - Very sharp mid-Atlantic based trainer Mike Gorham, who finished second in the standings at the competitive Delaware meet, sends out this speedy daughter of "Grindstone." Has plenty of early zip and drops to her lowest claiming level ever. Mare likes to win (9-for-27) and trainer's picked a good spot here.
(# 1) Cookie's Gold - Competitive mare has been in the money in 16-of-25 lifetime starts almost all against better. Trainer Cecil Borel has given her six weeks between starts lately and that is today's scenario. Has the rail and some positional speed.
(# 9) No Better Chance - Comes-back off a 10-week layoff for trainer Jim Garroutte. Veteran is 10-for-30 lifetime, so she knows where the finish line is. Has some speed, and her local record is an outstanding four-for-eight.
(# 3) Ca Ching the Green - Daughter of "Catienus" had a great 2007 at age five,(14-3-3-2). Her form has slipped a bit after she was claimed away from Bret Calhoun. However, she has faced tougher in her last pair at Turfway and drops down for this attempt.

AQUEDUCT Race #NINE (4:10 PM Eastern)
(# 3) MUNRO BANK - Debut runner from the Richard Dutrow barn has a sharp work on Dec. 12 and another on Jan. 16. Drills in between are of the stamina-building type. Trainer is 34% with his firsters and the same percentage exists when he rides Mike Luzzi, as he does here.
(# 6) Friendly Freud - Logical selection and probable favorite has burned a lot of money in his nine attempts. However, he looks like the best of those that have run, and if the firsters are light on talent, he could get his picture taken.
(# 10) Portugesemano'war - Aptly named runner as his dam is "Jelly Fish." Debuted in the mud for Steve Klesaris here on Dec. 27. Well bet that day and Dominguez was enlisted. Showed some speed and backed-up a bit late. Now with Linda Rice, he has a good drill on Jan. 13.
(# 7) Wayoutsidethebox - Wide trip in his debut when he took some money at the windows. Halves in value and gets the addition of blinkers for start number two. Could improve significantly.

OAKLAWN PARK Race #SIX (4:35 PM Eastern)
(# 2) ZIPPED - Jones barn did very well here last year and they had a longshot winner (Ferragamo) in yesterday's seventh race. This one is fit, well prepped at the Fair Grounds and draws towards the inside. Would be surprised if he didn't run well.
(# 1) Makutus - Ran on well in his latest at the Fair Grounds for trainer Chuck Simon. Improved a lot in two months off of his Churchill debut. Word was out, as he was bet down to 5-1 that day. Goes second off a freshening and trainer adds blinkers today. Draws the rail and could take this with an alert break.
(# 3) Stone Bird - Wayne Lukas had a good meeting here last winter and started out with an opening day winner the other day. Son of "Grindstone" hasn't shown much, but he's working well for his return from two months off.
(# 9) Every Time - Well-bred colt ("Unbridled's Song") makes his second start after having a bit of a troubled trip in a well-bet Remington Park debut in late November. He's working well and travels a longer distance, which he should appreciate.
