Horse Racing Selection - January 18, 2008

Just missed a real nice trifecta in Aqueduct's fifth race when our top pick couldn't hold down the third spot late. Our second pick and fourth selection combined for a $120.50 exacta but we lost the tri by a narrow margin.

With historic Oaklawn Park opening today, we have a total of four races, two each from Oaklawn and Aqueduct.

Today's Best Bet is #1a Quixotic Lassie in race #3 at Aqueduct.

Thursday's Results: Aqueduct Race #1 Exacta second pick with Top pick (4-2) paid $22.00.

Today's Horse Racing Picks:

AQUEDUCT Race #THREE (1:25 PM Eastern)

(# 1a) QUIXOTIC LASSIE - One of a pair from Gary Contessa and they form a powerful entry. This filly has gotten better with each start and finished strongly in her last pair. Tries two-turns for the first time and draws a weak bunch.
(# 1) Deities Day - The other half of the Contessa entry was most impressive in winning her debut race at a mile in the Belmont mud. Went directly into a stakes where she didn't run well. This is a much easier assignment and Dominguez choses this part of the entry.
(# 3) Violent Behavior - Ships in from Philly Park for a good trainer (Juan Guerrero) and has moved forward in each of her three races. Brings some early speed to the party.
(# 2) City By the Sea - Broke her maiden sprinting for a $35K tag last out. This is her first try at a distance and she draws the all-important rail. Could fill out the exacta.

OAKLAWN PARK Race #ONE (2:05 PM Eastern)
(# 4) BAGOGA - Cody Autry-trained runner comes here and goes first time tagged after trying allowance foes since breaking his maiden almost exactly one year ago. Last pair have been good tries on the Fair Grounds turf. In shape and ready to start the meeting off for a top barn.
(# 9) Sweeping Promises - From the top Donnie Von Hemel stable, he takes on winners for the first time after dusting maidens in his last at Remington Park. He's improving and brings dangerous speed to the party. Working superbly, he and the top pick are very close in my figures.
(# 1) Pro Thunder - Broke his maiden here last year in handy fashion. He hasn't won since but gets to try this surface again after racing on grass and poly courses.
(# 3) Askeeboy - Has developed into a consistent late runner at and around this tag. His numbers relegate him to a minor award, but he could do so at a square price.

OAKLAWN PARK Race #THREE (3:05 PM Eastern)
(# 6) CLASSIC COWBOY - Has flashed speed at Remington against open claiming maidens and has come back from a May layoff a better horse. Has a super work on Jan. 6 over this surface and think he'll play catch-me-if-you-can.
(# 8) Mammoth storm - Has raced well against open-maidens in Kentucky. Has been finishing on the fringes and this drop in with state-breds makes him an instant win contender.
(# 2) Lucky Nui - Well bet in debut at Delta Downs and that run may set him up for this race against fellow Arkansas breds. Trainer (Jerry Cart) wins a lot of races.
(# 1) Minits Heart Throb - Debuts for a good barn (Bill Howard) and has several works that indicate that he can run a little. Draws the rail and the board may offer you a hint if he takes some money.

AQUEDUCT Race #NINE (4:00 PM Eastern)
(# 2) GOLDEN HORSESHOE - Finished second two back in one of these on this surface. Race had a runaway winner and this filly stayed on well for the place. Sent back to Philly Park for a sprint she closed strongly to finish third. Draws the rail and comes from a top barn (Steve Klesaris).
(# 1a) Mattie Just - Works are very sharp for runner making her first start since last May at Delaware. Now in the fine McLaughlin barn, she may make a bid for an early lead. Coupled in the wagering with "Hatta Diamond" and only one will run.
(# 4) Battingstar - Set the pace in last for the Contessa barn in her first try at a route. Stayed on until the last 1/8th before weakening slightly.
(# 3) Victory for M'lady - Ran well in her first race in New York after coming here from Turf Paradise. Stayed up and on the pace and tired in the last furlong.
