Horse Racing Tracks - December 31, 2008We would like to wish our patrons a safe and "Happy New Years" and a warm thank-you for being part of the sport of thoroughbred racing. Times are hard and the industry is under "seige" from many sides, but the "Sport of Kings" will survive and we hope that the year 2009 will be a successful and profitable one for all those involved. A reminder that Gulfstream Park opens this Saturday and the start of the "Triple Crown Trail" will be underway soon. Today's menu will consist of three races from the Fair Grounds, and one each from the "Big A" and Santa Anita. Tuesday's Results: Philadelphia Park Race # 9 = Exacta ( 2-6) 2nd pk with Best Bet Pd. $29.80 Tampa Bay Race # 9 = Top Pick # 2 (Allies Event) Pd. $3.00 Exacta = ( 2-6) Pd. $14.20 T-fecta ( 2-6-7) Pd. $46.80 ![]() Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #6 (TORONTO BOUND) - Barn (Mark Casse) is having it's usual sharp meet. This runner raced well at Woodbine during the summer and was "Put away" until the start of this meet. Raced evenly while wide in his Fair Ground's debut in a sprint and he'll be sent two-turns with blinkers on today. The horse to beat. 2nd pick: #4 (With Attitude) - Asmussen trained son of "With Approval" chased a wire-to-wire winner last out on the main track and looks like the best speed as he moves to the grass. Must be caught. 3rd pick: #8 (Down The Road) - Son of the good turf sire, "Indian Charlie" raced evenly in a sprint debut in a race that was washed off the grass course. Stretches-out in distance and moves to the surface he was bred for. FAIR GROUNDS Race #6 at 3:50 PM Eastern Top pick: #3 (ALL TOO SOLID) - Raced well in her grass debut which came at Santa Anita in a sprint "down the hill". Ran on a sloppy track here last out and did everything she could from her outside post but just could not get by the leader turning for home. Moves back to the grass, and this 7.5 furlong distance should get the maiden win for her. 2nd pick: #8 (Molly Peaches) - She finished behind the choice last out and has run well in all three of her starts. The two-turn nature of this contest should be fine for this daughter of "Meadowlake". 3rd pick: #9 (Horse Creek) - First-time-starter by "Horse Chestnut*" is bred for the grass and is in the barn of the nation's leading trainer (Steve Asmussen). Solid series of stamina building drills should have her fit. 4th pick: #14 (Destiny Bound) - Needs a pair of scratches to compete, but if allowed she'll be going a distance after finishing strongly in her sprint debut. SANTA ANITA Race #1 at 4:00 PM Eastern Top pick: #3 (DEACON'S CAT) - Excellent work on this surface Dec. 21st indicates that this runner is set for his best yet in his 3rd lifetime start. He's run well in his first pair, but that recent work says that today he'll bring everything he has. 2nd pick: #5 (Boozin' Bear) - Looks like the main speed today. He set a pressured pace in his debut and held well until the last 1/16th. Runs on his home turf today and he's done all his training on this surface. 3rd pick: #4 (Aitcho) - Finished 2nd last out in the same race as the top two selections. He rallied from farther back that day into a fast pace that no doubt helped his closing tactics out. AQUEDUCT Race #9 at 4:10 PM Eastern Top pick: #6 (MRS. HOLDEN) - Logical selection and probable favorite finished a strong 2nd last out, and the only runner in front of her was her entry-mate. Has the best speed and should be a very tough filly to beat. 2nd pick: #4 (Queen Bonnie) - She finished 3rd last out after a wide trip and wound up 3rd beaten three lenghts by the top pick. Lightly raced, well-bred, and improving. The best chance for an upset. 3rd pick: #11 (Jaimies Gem) - Goes from a 7lb. apprentice to a 10lb. "bug", but believe it's a positive switch. Can make a late run and finish in the exotics with a "clean" trip. 4th pick: #1 (Cat Radio) - Gets a trainer switch (Colin Maragh) and a big rider upgrade to the trainer's son (Rajiv). Has the rail and has been the victim of some very "weak" rides of late. Exotics contender at a big price. 5th pick: #9 (Distinctive Doc) - Filly was bumped at the start last out in the same race comomn to the first four horses selscted. She made up some late ground and effort was her first in almost 2 months. Late threat. FAIR GROUNDS Race #10 at 5:50 PM Eastern Top pick: #8 (TAPIT AGAIN) - Claimed last out by Ed Johnston from the Tom Amoss operation. Good trainer with 2yr.olds brings him back rather quickly and at the same price. Should run much better in start number two. 2nd pick: #10 (Autonomous) - Post is of no help, but he drops off a mid-pack finish in his debut. Barn (Tom Amoss) is one of the best on the grounds. It would be no surprise to see him move forward. 3rd pick: #6 (Actual Fact) - Training steadily and in better than average fashion for a deadly barn (Mike Stidham) first time out. Field here is a bit "lite" for the level so he could easily impact in his debut. 4th pick: #9 (Gifts For A King) - Cuts-back in distance and drops in price after a pair of even efforts against slightly better. ![]() Horse Racing Picks Resources:
