Horse Racing Selections - December 31, 2007With many of the major centers closed today, we have selections and analysis on four races from Calder Race Course and Turfway Park. A reminder that Gulfstream Park opens their 2008 meet this Thursday January 3. Today's Best Bet is #10 Tale Of A Lady in Race # 6 at Calder Race Course. Additional note: The three races at Calder are ALL GRASS RACES, and the selections are for that surface only. Sunday's Results: Aqueduct Race #2 Top Pick Winner # 8 (Guidance) Paid $9.70.
Turfway Park Race #3 Best Bet Winner #3 (Brave & Skillful) Paid $5. Today's Horse Racing Picks: (# 4) PROUD MOVER - Has been well backed in all three starts, a sure sign that she has ability. Stepped it up when sent to the grass in her second try. Had a poor post in latest (11) and that led to a wide trip. Drops a tad and she's the horse to beat. (# 1) Irish Cove - Plesa-trained filly put it together in last in a third off a layoff situation. Tracked the pace, bid but could make little impact on a runaway winner while gamely holding down the place. Has the hedge and she may try for the top. (# 6) Homeroom Angel - Blinkers go on filly who has clearly shown an affinity for the grass surface. She's not far off these in figures, and the "hood" may put her over the top. (# 2) Debbie's Fast Girl - Another who definitely prefers the turf. Comes back off a two-month freshening for Steve Dwoskin. Rest may have done her some good. CALDER Race #FOUR (1:45 PM Eastern) (# 3) PRETTY FACE FAY - Has been sharp in all of her grass attempts. Latest was her best ever and it was her second start for trainer Ed Plesa. Filly was with a good barn earlier with Richard Violette. Only needs a clear trip. (# 5) County Mayo - Had a late season three-year-old debut at Aqueduct for trainer George Weaver. She must have some issues not having raced until then. She's working well on the turf and she drops into a claimer today. Coa's presence is noted, and he and Weaver are 21% when paired together. (# 10 ) Send Joyce - Chased a fast pace in last, bid for the top but the early effort took it's toll late. Still, it was a good performance. Clearly, like most of her sire's ("Absent Russian's")sons and daughters, she prefers the infield. (# 7) Cbt Mocha Mocha - Speedy filly cuts back in distance off a race that saw her run rank on the lead. Will certainly impact this early, and the longer race may have made her a better animal. CALDER Race #SIX (2:40 PM Eastern) (# 10) TALE OF A LADY - Looks perfectly set up for a big race by Todd Pletcher. Ran well on the grass at Belmont, was given seven weeks off before a dirt sprint on Nov. 24. She's working very sharply and goes long on the grass off the dirt sprint. It's her race to lose. One of a pair from Pletcher and they race uncoupled. (# 8) Holy Grace - Had a pair of "educational" runs on the main track at Delaware in October. Different circumstances today, grass and she's had some time to grow and mature. Trainer Graham Motion has her working well on the turf, and he names Edgar Prado today. (# 6) Antonova - Daughter of "Halo's Image" tried a stakes in last and drew a very difficult post (11) for the assignment. Showed some speed while encountering traffic woes on the clubhouse turn. Returns to her proper element at this stage, MSW competition. (# 1) Sonnets Way - The second of the Pletcher fillies has been in training for some time now so she should be dead fit. Sharp gate work way back in early October at Monmouth is noted. (# 4) Sereia - First start was poor but it came going long on the dirt in a race with an eight-length winner. Filly is trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, and she is sired by "Lido Palace" and should like running on the grass. TURFWAY PARK Race #NINE (4:50 PM Eastern) (# 1) PLENTY O LADY - Comes back after almost two months on the sidelines for David Pate. Broke her maiden over this surface at this distance on Sept. 28. After a pair of failed tries against winners she went in for some R & R. Her recent AM work is outstanding and she looks ready to roll after the freshening. (# 2) Eat Pie - Started her racing career in England and won first crack out of the box. Has tried a pair of stakes since, one overseas and the other at Arlington after coming "across the pond." She's in a top barn with Eddie Kenneally. He's had almost three months to get her acclimated to U.S. racing. (# 9) Twilighted Thistle - Broke her maiden here on Dec. 20 in her third-lifetime start. Did so impressively. Comes back very quickly for this, so she must be doing well. (# 4) Little Somethin - Won here in her debut on Sept. 16, then tried allowance foes at Keeneland. She was given almost two months off after the initial pair. Showed speed in her return at Hawthorne and now comes back to the scene of her lone victory. Horse Racing Picks Resources:
