Horse Racing Line - December 30, 2008There are with many tracks closed today as most will run New Year's Eve thru Sunday. Today we feature five races, with two each from Tampa Bay Downs and Philadelphia Park, and one contest from Turfway Park. Today's Best Bet is #6 Favorite Valay in Race #9 at Philadelphia Park. Monday's Results: Calder Race #8 T-fecta box (5-3-8) $972.60. ![]() Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #7 (ROSE'S WINE) - Raced evenly in her return after a much needed two-month break. Loves the surface (8-3-0-1) and has had a very good year wherever she's raced. Takes this with a "clean" trip. 2nd pick: #3 (Presedential Date) - Another who likes the course (13-4-0-1) and exits the same race as the top pick. This runner had some traffic problems that day and actually finished in front of "Rose" in that one. Big player. 3rd pick: #1 (Spunky Bottoms) - Has some speed, draws the rail, and makes her third start back off a four-month absence. Exotics player. 4th pick: #10 (Forty Si) - Figures are light and she draws a poor post. Could hit the tri and/or super with one of her better efforts. PHILADELPHIA PARK Race #8 at 3:20 PM Eastern Top pick: #8 (RHYAD) - Just missed (by a neck) in a great debut effort and followed that up with a very impressive maiden win here on Dec. 6. Son of "Essence of Dubai" has a bullet half-mile drill on the Dec. 27, and looks ready to win again. 2nd pick: #3 (Great Debater) - Raced evenly against a good group and at a tough distance in his debut. Scored at Aqueduct second time out when dropped in for a tag. In a good barn (Richard Dutrow) and is carefully spotted today in his first against winners. 3rd pick: #9 (Celestial Diamond) - Wide last out pressing the pace from a poor outside post going long. Shorten-up and draws a nice post. His sprint form is solid and think he'll run well. 4th pick: #6 (Adduce) - Sharp maiden win last out on this course and he's improved with each race. Tries winners for the first time, but other than the top pick his best fits with these. PHILADELPHIA PARK Race #9 at 3:50 PM Eastern Top pick: #6 (FAVORITE VALAY) - Takes a huge drop and cuts back in distance for a very capable barn (Keith Lebarron). It is hard to imagine him not impacting this poor group and would be very surprised if runs worse than second. 2nd pick: #2 (Tin Soldier) - The main challenger will make his first start for trainer Mike Catalano (a 27% winning move) after a claim in early November from the Scott Lake barn. Has good tactical sped and he may be put right on the lead today. 3rd pick: #11 (Beechmont) - Has a good post for the distance and has finished second or third in seven of his 15 starts this year with many coming against tougher. TAMPA BAY DOWNS Race #9 at 4:05 PM Eastern Top pick: #2 (ALLIE'S EVENT) - Ran a very big race in his first start on the grass. Raced widest from a poor post, he bid strongly and stayed on well in a race won by a very heavy favorite. Faces an easier crew and draws a much better slot. The horse to beat. 2nd pick: #5 (This Is My Game) - Tired chasing the top pick last out, but he could close that gap today as he may have needed that race and is working swiftly for this. 3rd pick: #7 (Pampered King) - Good barn (Graham Motion) sends out this recent maiden winner to try his luck against fellow winners for the first time. Has room for upside and he's clearly becoming a better runner. 4th pick: #6 (Perfect Bull) - Finished fourth in a stakes last out at Remington Park and has clearly improved his game since switching to the turf two races back. Can compete here and probably at a square price. TAMPA BAY DOWNS Race #10 at 4:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #6 (NANCY'S VOYAGE) - Trainer Larry Bates sends this filly back on a quick turnaround (seven days) off a pretty rough trip last out. Drops in class and they probably thought she was ready for better when they added blinkers for the recent start. Should do well in this "poor" group. 2nd pick: #2 (Phone Rate) - Drops in price and cuts back in distance after chasing the pace going longer last out. Obvious contender if she repeats her last figure. 3rd pick: #3 (Whatdoesladdiewant) - Tampa regular Sam Cronk sends out this debuting daughter of "Outflanker" and she need not be anything special to impact this race.
