Horse Racing Selections - December 28, 2008Today's newsletter will feature a total of five contests and we'll mix it up quite a bit. We'll have a pair from Aqueduct and single contests from Calder, the Fair Grounds, and Santa Anita. Today's Best Bet is #5 Hooligan's Star in Race #9 at the Fair Grounds. Saturday's Results: Fair Grounds Race #6 Top Pick #4 (Pinpoint) $5.60. ![]() Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #7 (MIA'S FIRST) - Blinkers are added by trainer Richard Dutrow in an attempt to get this filly her maiden win. She's run sharply in all three starts since coming to this barn and any figure nearing the one she earned finishing second last out will win this. 2nd pick: #4 (Aspasia) - Speedy filly opened a long early lead last out and tired after hitting the stretch to finish third. Blinkers also will go on this filly and she'll try and win this in the first two furlongs. 3rd pick: #9 (Yes She's A Lady) - Had a very "eventful" debut. Well-bred filly had worked well for her debut but had the misfortune to "collide" with a filly who had "broken down" early in that contest and she lost her jockey as a result. Returns quickly for the Pletcher barn and she deserves some consideration. 4th pick: #10 (Pleasant Ballerina) - Well behind the choice last out, she's going second off a layoff for a good barn (Rick Violette). Can see her improving quite a bit today. CALDER Race #7 at 3:10 PM Eastern Top pick: #2 (LINCOLN'S BULLET) - Powerful win last out at a bit shorter distance and this runner appears to be at his "peak" right now. Extra yardage today is in his favor and anything nearing his latest wins this. 2nd pick: #3 (Bonnistar) - Gelding is cutting back in distance for this seven-furlong affair and that's a move that trainer William White has specialized in. Drwas the rail, has positional speed and enters this in good shape. Big threat. 3rd pick: #8 (Varitek) - Good post for runner that more often than not runs well, but settles for minor awards. Can see him staying within range and making some late headway. AQUEDUCT Race #9 at 4:10 PM Eastern Top pick: #4 (HOLLY TIME) - Speedy runner ran into a big speed-ball last out and could not match strides with that easy wire-to-wire winner. Drops in price and goes third off a long layoff. Ready to score. 2nd pick: #1 (Lights Of Broadway) - Another dropper, this one has both speed/stalking ability and enters this in good condition. Contessa barn had a bad day yesterday losing with three favorites. Runner is well-spotted. 3rd pick: #7 (Sonny's the One) - Re-claim by trainer Paulino Ortiz has never raced at this $10K level before and has remained competitive against better without winning. Can see him racing mid-pack and making some late noise. 4th pick: #9 (Precise Action) - Raced evenly at this level in his return from a six-month absence and will need to pick it up to contend. He's run strong here in the past (12-2-4-0). FAIR GROUNDS Race #9 at 5:20 PM Eastern Top pick: #5 (HOOLIGAN'S STAR) - Very impressive maiden win last out and the "figure" earned towers over this group. A repeat of it sends her to the winner's circle in her first start against fellow winners. 2nd pick: #6 (Awesome Amazon) - Speedy filly is a turf specialist but raced well in her only race on the dirt. Looks like the main speed and if rated properly she could take them a long ways. 3rd pick: #7 (Miss Bean Wah) - Tired last out after having a good early position. Makes her third start off a long layoff and may be ready for her best. SANTA ANITA Race #7 at 6:35 PM Eastern Top pick: #8 (NORTH RODEO) - Stakes-placed runner has a good overall mark and is spotted well by her connections in her first race in three months. Working fast on this surface for her return and if she brings her best she'll be tough to beat. 2nd pick: #5 (Asian Eyes) - Very sharp at present and she'll be moving up a bit in class for this. Runs hard every time and think that she fits at this level. The main danger. 3rd pick: #7 (Ms Toomsuba) - Very consistent filly has never finished off the board in eight career starts. Has both speed and stalking ability and she'll be cutting back a bit in distance for this. 4th pick: #1 (Unusual Spirit) - Speedy sort resides on the rail and raced fine in her lone effort on a "poly" surface. Should be the early leader and if the rail is playing well she could stay a long time. Horse Racing Picks Resources:
