Horse Racing Tipsters - December 24, 2007

Wunderdog Racing would like to wish all of its loyal subscribers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. No sheet will be published tomorrow, as Charles Dickens would say: "In keeping with the spirit of the season."

We had a big exacta hit from Turfway Park race No. 9 yesterday, collecting $143. Today we have four races, a pair each from Calder and the Fair Grounds.

Today's Best Bet is #8 Quality Affair in Race #9 at Calder.

Sunday Results: Turfway Race #3 Top Pick Winner #9 (Yanke's Blast) Paid $3.60. Exacta Top with 2nd (9-3) Paid $16.40 (original 2nd pick scratched).

Fair Grounds Race #3 Exacta 2nd with top (5-4) Paid $13.20.

Fair Grounds Race #10 Best Bet Winner #5 (No Surgeon) Paid $3.40.

Turfway Park Race #9 Exacta (Box of top three) 9-3 Paid $143.

Today's Horse Racing Picks:

CALDER Race #FIVE (2:15 PM Eastern)

(# 8) SILVER CHARITY - Has become a better filly since returning from some time off, and a switch back to the Bill White barn. Still has room for more improvement and can take these from just off the lead.
(# 5) Christina's Diamond - Returns from over a year's layoff for a new trainer, Allen Iwinski, who is coming back from a sabbatical from the racing game. Filly faced tougher before her layoff and likes the mile distance. At one time trainer did well with this type of returnee.
(# 7) Greeleylikelady - Item that jumps off the page is that filly is making her first start for Kirk Ziadie off a recent claim. Winless on the grass, trainer also moves her up in class for her first try since the "halter."

FAIR GROUNDS Race #THREE (2:25 PM Eastern)
(# 5) CROSSWORD - Farish/Howard runner has always performed well, and just missed getting up in the Tenacious Hdcp. last time out, failing by less than a length to a good runner in "Steve's Double." Stable rider Albarado is aboard and he is the choice in a contentious small field.
(# 2) Port Clyde - Larry Jones trained runner has some speed and looks like he's ready to go off a sharp recent work. Can prove a tough animal to pass, and he faced some good horses in his Delaware Campaign before coming south.
(# 3) He's Rotal Dee - Stretches out off a fine effort on opening day when he just missed in the Thanksgiving Hdcp. Don't think he'll try for the top, so a close-up stalking trip is in store.

FAIR GROUNDS Race #FIVE (3:15 PM Eastern)
(# 3) MARQUET REALITY - Trainer W. Bret Calhoun has proven deadly when he drops his horses into maiden claimers. This colt showed big speed at Remington Park, and was also well supported at the betting windows. Son of "Marquetry" has a trio of works over the local dirt, and it looks like all systems are a go.
(# 9) Sgt. Joe - Set the pace last out in his first attempt in a maiden claimer. Started his career in a pair of MSW races and it was encouragong to see him improve on the drop. Trainer Dave Carroll always has some winners during this meet.
(# 4) Droll - Claiborne home-bred is now with Al stall after starting his career in the barn of Hall of Famer Bill Mott. Colt has done well in the mornings, but has yet to transfer his speed to the afternoon.

CALDER Race #NINE (4:05 PM Eastern)
(# 8) QUALITY AFFAIR - Just missed in first start here after shipping south for the Allen Jerkens barn. She's plenty fast, and master seems to have her headed in the right direction. Sharp drill since seals the deal.
(# 1) Clerico - Filly debuted for the Mike Matz barn at Saratoga, a sure sign that she has ability, as he splits his stock between Saratoga and Delaware. He only runs horses that he thinks are worthy at the Spa. Filly is improving rapidly at the moment, and comes into this off a smashing maiden win at Laurel. Continues to drill well at Palm Meadows, and she has a shot at the upset.
(# 2) Candlelight - Chris Clement-trained filly moves back to the dirt after a failed attempt on the grass. Unusual, as trainer's stock generally improves with that move. Filly seems to prefer the dirt, and that's what she gets today.
