Horse Racing Methods Systems - December 22, 2008A reminder that we will not be publishing a Racing Newsletter on Christmas Eve or on Christmas Day. However we'll be back on Friday as both Aqueduct and Santa Anita open with Gulfstream following a week later. Today's menu has two races each from Philadelphia Park and Calder, with a single contest from the Fair Grounds. Today's Best Bet is #6 Regal Bird in Race #7 at Calder. Sunday's Results: Hawthorne cancelled it's program, so we only had four races. ![]() Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #6 (REGAL BIRD) - Big speed shown last out in her first start with blinkers. Sharp barn ("Becky" Maker) has her well-spotted today in a race devoid of any pace. The choice to go wire-to-wire. 2nd pick: #3 (Count Me Out) - Very consistent filly likes this course (eight for 12 in the money finishes) and it's hard to imagine her not running well again. 3rd pick: #1 (Amaze Me) - Finished third last out in her first start in just over four months. Has the rail, can stalk, and if she moves forward in her second back she could hit the exotics. PHILADELPHIA PARK Race #8 at 3:20 PM Eastern Top pick: #5 (KILLARNY CASTLE) - Very sharp trainer (Greg DiPrima) sends this filly down from New York for this contest. Claimed in late September, she won impressively seven weeks later at the Meadowlands and has had five weeks of freshening since then. Has both speed and stalking ability and she's the choice for the win. 2nd pick: #6 (Stephaningrid) - Speedy filly will stretch-out for the first time in her career today. Lightly raced and in a good barn (Richard Vega), she is the probable pace setter and could last a long time. 3rd pick: #2 (In Command) - Ran 12 days ago at Aqueduct in a sprint. Likes distance racing and and is set-up on the quick turnaround and stretch-out in yardage for a big try. 4th pick: #7 (Super Heroine) - Moves to the rail after a wide trip from a poor post (eighth) in the slop. Fits here and she's three for six on this dirt. Coupled in the wagering with "Tease". CALDER Race #8 at 3:40 PM Eastern Top pick: #4 (SHIFTIN GEARS) - Had a "rough" trip in his debut but to his credit he still ran well. Lasix is added for start number two and this son of "Formal Dinner" should improve enough for a shot at the win. 2nd pick: #7 (Good Mornin Jordan) - Starts (10) are beginning to mount, but he's improving and most of trainer Barry Rose's stock get better with a lot of outings. 3rd pick: #8 (Xcalak) - Returns quickly after a poor debut, and that's a good sign, as is the trainer's 35% stat with second-time starters. Price play. 4th pick: #1 (Cruising Royally) - Ran well at big odds in his debut. draws the rail and a natural move forward would put him in this. FAIR GROUNDS Race #6 at 3:50 PM Eastern Top pick: #5 (YES I'M WOMAN) - Moves to the infield which she's bred for. Raced well last winter and had a nice return run on Keeneland's "poly" surface in the fall. Working well and ready to win. 2nd pick: #4 (Meandyoubabe) - Just missed last out in her first off a freshening and first for trainer Tim Glyshaw. Raced mid-pack that day and made a nice sustained rally while wide. Repeat makes her a win contender. 3rd pick: #8 (Hitch Your Wagon) - Move to the barn of Merrill Scherer is a plus and filly has run well in all her starts. She ran well at this 5.5 furlong-distance last summer at Ellis Park. PHILADELPHIA PARK Race #9 at 3:50 PM Eastern Top pick: #11 (OUGHTLANDS) - Finished second in his last pair at Churchill for this tag. Well-bred and in a good barn (Layne Gilliforte), he'll be very tough for this crew to handle. 2nd pick: #8 (Golada King) - West-coast shipper finished second at Penn National last out for this price-tag going a mile. Appears to be nearing his best for a good barn (Bernie Houghton). 3rd pick: #4 (Polka At Night) - Chased a runaway winner all the way last out, and although well-beaten, he held the place by eight lengths. Contender. 4th pick: #6 (Care Package) - Makes his first start for Derek Ryan and first off a long layoff. Bred to go long ("Repent") and is working sharply, Price play. 5th pick: #12 (Condamine) - Finished a distant third last out in his first off a layoff and first for this $12,500 tag. Well behind (eight lengths) to "Polka" last out she draws a rough post (12) for this attempt. Horse Racing Picks Resources:
