Belmont Stakes Pick - December 21, 2008A reminder that with just about every track being dark on Christmas Eve and of course on Christmas Day, we will not be publishing a Racing Newsletter this coming Wednesday and Thursday. However, on Friday the 26th, Aqueduct and Santa Anita will open with Gulfstream starting the following week. Today's Newsletter will mix it up a bit with two races each from the Fair Grounds and Calder, and one from Hawthorne. Today's Best Bet is #4 Class Ack in Race #6 at Hawthorne. Saturday's Results: Fair Grounds Race #6 Exacta (7-1) $13.00. ![]() Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #1 (INDIAN HALLOWEEN) - Sharp shipper made a wide move in her last at Philadelphia Park and stayed on well until mid-stretch. Draws the rail today for a hot trainer (Mike Matz) and she's a win contender at a square price. 2nd pick: #4 (Wisconsin Girl) - Nick Zito trained filly wasn't sharp in her return in Kentucky (Churchill Downs), but she should rebound today with a big race in her second off the bench. 3rd pick: #6 (Nicole's Song) - Goes from turf to dirt for veteran trainer Bob Hale. She's raced well with this move in the past and is in racing shape. FAIR GROUNDS Race #6 at 3:50 PM Eastern Top pick: #1 (WICKED HOT) - Well set-up by a top barn (Tom Proctor) to get her maiden win. She finished third last out in her second off a layoff at Churchill Downs against tougher than these. Has good tactical speed and draws the rail. Clean break can win this. 2nd pick: #6 (Box Wine Betty) - Speedy filly will try real dirt after finishing second in her last four starts. Barn (Mark Casse) is having a great meet (31%) and this filly is an obvious contender. 3rd pick: #8 (Karma Check) - She hasn't seen any action in a year, but is working sharply for a top trainer (Bret Calhoun). It would be no surprise to see her run well off the long break. 4th pick: #7 (Achnasheals) - Well-bred ("Broken Vow") and she debuts for a top barn (Tom Amoss) off some very "snappy" drills" However, she's almost four without having a start. CALDER Race #10 at 4:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #1 (GABAGHOST) - Ran just six days ago and he'll draw the rail and stretch-out in distance, both positive moves by his trainer (Joe Catanese). Look for him to be in this from start-to-finish. 2nd pick: #2 (Buddha's Ballet) - Very sharp barn (Pete Walder)wins at a high rate (usually around 30%) wherever he races. Blinkers were added two starts back and he's been a better horse since. Draws well and is a win threat. 3rd pick: #6 (Full Rate) - Improved noticeably last out in start number two and runs back today at the same tag and distance. 4th pick: #7 (Amazo'n) - This is his 18th lifetime start and he has some minor awards, but is probably best used in the bottom of the exotics. FAIR GROUNDS Race #8 at 4:45 PM Eastern Top pick: #9 (EXTRA EXCLUSIVE) - Tracked the pace in the slop last out, but despite trying hard every step he could not get by the second choice here "Hello Ladies". Hard-hitter has won five of 10 this year and is "razor" sharp at this point. 2nd pick: #5 (Hello Ladies) - As mentioned above, this speedy runner went wire-to-wire last out on a sloppy track and held sway. Very game runner will be in it again from start-to-finish. 3rd pick: #3 (I Forty Nine) - Moves up in class and is as consistent as they come at this level. He's won or placed in eight of his last nine races and will be looming right behind the top pair turning for home. 4th pick: #1 (Mojito Man) - Has the rail and can be pretty fast, but he'll need to rebound from a very por try on a sloppy track in his latest. HAWTHORNE Race #6 at 4:55 PM Eastern Top pick: #4 (CLASS ACK) - Easy win last out in his second start back and first ever at this $10K tag. He went right to the top and went wire-to-wire that day. Looms the main speed in this race and he'll prove very tough to catch. 2nd pick: #5 (Da Grizz) - Rallied late to finish second to "Ack" last out, and it represented his third straight second-place finish at this $10,000 price. Logical player. 3rd pick: #1 (Sefa Split) - Comes off a pair of very poor efforts. Drops down to this $10K price for the first time and draws the rail. Could wake-up against this group. 4th pick: #3 (Instant Messenger) - Runner is steady but not as sharp as the top pair. Has a hint of speed but the top pick is faster. He'll need to do better for a chance at the win. ![]() Horse Racing Picks Resources:
