Kentucky Derby Handicapping - December 18, 2007We had a decent day at Calder yesterday including a trifecta hit (1-5-4) for $56 as well as the superfecta (1-5-4-7) for $141.60. Calder is closed today, but we'll stay in Florida and move a bit north, to Tampa Bay Downs for four races. Today's Best Bet is #8 Zara's Storm in Race #8 at Tampa Bay Downs. Monday's Results: Calder Race #6 Top Pick Winner #3 (Po Purr E.) Paid $4. Exacta (3-11) Paid $28.40 (Only had 2 of our 4 horses run).
Calder Race #10 Best Bet Winner #1 (Victory at Shiloh) Paid $4.60. Exacta (1-5) Paid $13.20. Trifecta (1-5-4) Paid $56. Superfecta (1-5-4-7) Paid $141.60. Today's Horse Racing Picks: (# 3) DEVIL SLAM - Nicely bred filly (Grand Slam) started her career in the fine barn of Patrick Biancone. Goes out today for Dale Bennett - one of the perennial leaders in the standings here. Starts in here off a May layoff. Training well, this is the lowest claiming level she has ever run. Bennett is 29% successful with his new stock. (# 12) Lightening Point - Goes second off a Charlie Fontana claim, and cuts back in distance for this. Has been competitive sprinting against better, and she draws a good post. (# 11) Galaxy Wind - Drops considerably, cuts back, and switches surfaces. A win contender if she can handle the dirt. (# 2) Gaelic Gold - Competitive in last, her first try at this tag. Needs to step it up to contend for the win, but is a tri and super possibility. TAMPA BAY Race #SIX (2:40 PM Eastern) (# 6) L'S LIGHTNING - Drops back in for a tag for Gerald Bennett. Has speed and some back class. Daughter of "Storm Boot" is training superbly for this start. Good chance at a mild upset. (# 1) Trainee - Training in sensational style as she returns to her favorite surface. She's three-for-five here, and 0-for-6 elsewhere. Saves all the ground in here, and makes a late run at them. (# 2) Bright Pyrite - Had a profitable summer and fall competing in a series of Ohio-bred stakes at various distances. Has been idle since Oct. 20, but is training forwardly for this. TAMPA BAY Race #EIGHT (3:40 PM Eastern) (# 8) ZARA'S STORM - Training well for his first start in four months. Field is a weak one, and if ready off the bench, he should beat these. Trainer is 33% with this type of layoff. (# 6) Touch of Cat - Drops and shortens up for this attempt. Excellent drill on Dec. 8 indicates that something better is on the way. (# 3) Mr. Meadowlark - Caught a sloppy track in last at Calder, his first try against winners. Defeated maidens in handy fashion in previous run. May do much better today. (# 4) Two Seater - Has some speed and has been doing quite well at Beulah Park. Would need to really step it up to get more than a minor award. TAMPA BAY Race #TEN (4:35 PM Eastern) (# 2) FOREST FEVER - Great race at Hawthorne on Nov. 8 at a $17,500 level. Stalked the pace and drew off handily. Gelding by "Forestry" started his career in the Todd Pletcher barn. Takes these from close range. (# 12) Bello Papa - Ran well here last winter for Gerald Bennett. Came back in the fall at Presque Isle and did well. Draws a good slot and has been working steadily. (# 6) Islandprospectbob - Smashing maiden win at Remington Park off a nine-month vacation. Son of "Suave Prospect" has the best last race of any. Tested for class today. (# 8) Even Par - Lightly-raced colt ran a pair of sub-par races at Delaware this summer, his only two starts since this meeting last winter. Training well since coming south, he fits if ready.
