Horse Racing Handicappers - December 12, 2008A very rare winter storm hit the New Orleans area yesterday causing the cancellation of the racing card at the Fair Grounds. Action is expected to resume today. Our Newsletter today will have five races, two each from the Fair Grounds and Aqueduct and one from Hollywood Park. Today's Best Bet is #11 Bound To in Race #5 at the Fair Grounds. Thursday's Results: Aqueduct Race #6 Top Pick # 3 (La Concerto) $4.00.  Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #7 (BITABAZ) - Had a poor trip and was overmatched in his latest, a stakes effort on Nov. 9. Previous race produced a strong second-place finish at this level. In shape and he has good stalking ability. Off-track would work in his favor. 2nd pick: #9 (Vinnie Van Go) - Logical selection will be coming back from a 2 1/2 month layoff for trainer Gary Contessa. He's worked six times in the past 40 days and looks well prepared for his return engagemant. 3rd pick: #1 (King Leopold) - Well-bred runner ("Alderbaran") will be making his debut for the fine barn of Mike Hushion. He's been showing more speed in his works as this initial run approaches. Trainer wins at a solid 17% with his firsters. 4th pick: #4 (Puregoodniss) - Another debut runner, this one by "Good and Tough" and trained by Joe Imperio. Works are good and most have come on the main track here. AQUEDUCT Race #7 at 3:15 PM Eastern Top pick: #4 (INDY'S FORUM) - Big improvement last out in her second back off a seven-week break and also her second for trainer Gary Contessa. She showed talent last winter at the Fair Grounds and she would appear to be nearing her best. 2nd pick: #6 (Isn't That Special) - "Stumbled" at the start of her latest, her first start for trainer Greg DiPrima. Drops into a claimer and think she'll run well at a square price. 3rd pick: #10 (Sweet Bama Breeze) - Very speedy runner doesn't have much heart, but she's fresh and fit for her first race since late October. Working fast and will be sent hard in an attempt to clear. 4th pick: #8 (Devi) - Has both speed and stalking ability and comes back to this circuit after a trio of races at Finger Lakes. She'll need to rate today. 5th pick: #6 (Bob's PinUp Girl) - Makes her first start on this circuit after coming north from Florida. Filly's finished a distant third in her last pair at the Meadowlands for this tag. FAIR GROUNDS Race #5 at 3:20 PM Eastern Top pick: #11 (BOUND TO) - Filly is really coming to hand of late and she just missed last out at Churchill Downs. Race is expected to be run on the main-track, but she's the choice on either surface for the Bill Mott/P. Val combo. 2nd pick: #4 (Chief Mena) - Cuts back in distance after finishing second and third in five of her last six starts. Barn (Richard Scherer) has been hot since the start of this meet. Contender. 3rd pick: #3 (Spin Move) - She's never raced on anything but synthetic surfaces, but trainer Mark Casse drops her in class and she'll be going second off a long layoff. 4th pick: #5 (Mystery Tune) - In the "clever" barn of Cody Autry. Filly has been away for three months, but her drills are steady for a trainer who is great "off the bench" (37%). Special Race Notes: Selections for this race are the same whether it is run on the dirt or the turf. FAIR GROINDS Race #8 at 4:45 PM Eastern Top pick: #7 (MINDTRIP) - Finished second last out at this level after pressing the pace all the way, but was unable to stay with a runaway winner. Can win this from on or just off the lead. 2nd pick: #4 (Summers Edge) - Trainer Ronnie Werner will stretch this runner out off a seven-furlong prep race. Outing has the look of setting up her up for this longer attempt. Very dangerous rival. 3rd pick: #9 (Perfect Rhythm) - Raced with the top pick last out, but tired a bit late to finish third. She should move forward off of that race, as it came off a layoff. 4th pick: #11 (Threeforks River) - Poor post but she has top connections, Tom Proctor/Jesus Castanon. Raced well against Keeneland on "poly" and they came against tougher. Class drop will have her in this if she likes the dirt. HOLLYWOOD PARK Race #5 at 5:35 PM Eastern Top pick: #7 (UNCLE JEEP) - Not surprisingly he turned in his best effort yet on November 16, fresh off a Mike Mitchell claim. He worked twice since and he'll get the addition of blinkers today. The choice for the win. 2nd pick: #9 (Only Be Cause) - Baffert-trained son of "Giant's Causeway" is coming off two months on the sidelines. Working very quickly for his comebacker and he could be a factor at a square price. 3rd pick: #10 (Nochangenweather) - Freshened-up since a mid-September race at Fairplex. He raced evenly in a series of four starts prior to that at Hollywood and Del Mar, and was well-bet in all. Working fast and frequently for his return. 4th pick: #6 (Omega Mimister) - Improved run on view in his second career outing and he wasn't that far off the top choice that day (two lengths).
