Horse Handicapping - December 11, 2008This Sunday, the mare "Peppers Pride" will seek to extend her North-American record of 19 consecutive victories in what could be her last race before retirement. New Mexico-bred and raced, she set the record two starts ago when she won her 17th in a row. Today's menu will have a total of five races, two each from the Fair Grounds and Hollywood Park, and one from the "Big A." Today's Best Bet is #1 Rev Her Up in Race #6 at Hollywood Park. ![]() Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #3 (L.A. CONCERTO) - Looms the likely favorite and the more than likely winner. Daughter of "Aptitude" finished a strong second last out to a runner who finished second in a stakes here the other day. In a winning barn (Steve Asmussen) and she has the best speed. 2nd pick: #1 (American Land) - Freshened-up after a pair of starts earlier this fall. Had severe traffic troubles in her debut, and had a poor post (10) in start number two. Working well, draws the rail, and think she'll improve considerably. 3rd pick: #4 (Gold for the Queen) - Finished third last out and her performances are getting sharper with each race. Daughter of "Gold Token" was almost five lengths shy of the top pick last out. 4th pick: #7 (Sassification) - Has some speed, she'll be making her third start and trainer Mike Jablow takes the blinkers off. Last pair of works are very fast. FAIR GROUNDS Race #4 at 2:55 PM Eastern Top pick: #3 (BRAHMS DYNASTY) - Just missed last out after making a sustained wide run to reach the front, only to lose the race right on the wire. He lost enough ground to win the race by 3-4 lengths. Wins this with a "clean" trip. 2nd pick: #2 (Global Pictures) - Has no speed and broke poorly last - a lethal combination. In his previous pair he rallied from far back to finish second. Needs some pace help for more than a minor award. 3rd pick: #11 (Wager) - Speedy runner draws a poor post (11), so he'll have to be sent hard in an attempt to clear early. Not an impossible task in this weak field. 4th pick: #1 (Judge Jerry W.) - He had a busy early part of the year finishing second in four of his nine starts. Comes off a break of 2 1/2 months and he should make an impact against these. HOLLYWOOD PARK Race #2 at 4:00 PM Eastern Top pick: #5 (MAGIC LAUNCH) - Moves to the turf and a distance after a sprint try on the main-track here. She raced near a fast pace and rallied up the inside late in a good-looking debut. Trainer Carla Gaines is great with first time turf runners (28%), and think this filly can win this on the stretch-out in distance. 2nd pick: #2 (Kami D B C) - Has good early speed and has set the pace in both of her turf races. She held much better last out and if the top pick doesn't handle the grass, this filly is the more than likely winner. 3rd pick: #3 (Feel Free To Flee) - Makes her second start back off an eight-month absence. Did well earlier in the year in her first pair on the turf, but did not run well in her return outing. Bejarano is back aboard and she could easily make a big move forward in her second back. 4th pick: #7 (Sweet October) - She's finished second and third in her two races on the turf going long. Obvious contender should receive a solid pace to stalk, and she's an exotics player. FAIR GROUNDS Race #8 at 4:50 PM Eastern Top pick: #1 (SEAVIEW) - Draws the rail and is coming off a very sharp pace-pressing second-place finish last out in his first start ever on real dirt. Effort looks even better when the winner won a stakes next out at Delta Downs. Takes this from on or just off the top. 2nd pick: #5 (Cliff Meadows) - Won an allowance race at Delaware two back in his first start of '08, then followed that up with a poor race next out. In a winning barn (Steve Klesaris) and think he'll rebound today. 3rd pick: #7 (Evade) - Lightly raced, talented, fresh, and in a good barn (Al Stall). Competitive on both dirt and "poly" and trainer has him in a spot where he's a player. 4th pick: #9 (Silver Light) - He's been freshened up by trainer Steve Asmussen since a winning effort at Remington Park in early October. Races in a claimer for the first time off the break. Will be sent hard early. HOLLYWOOD PARK Race #6 at 6:05 PM Eastern Top pick: #1 (REV HER UP) - Filly makes her third lifetime start and looks ready to pick up her maiden win. Tired badly in her debut after chasing the pace, and in her second start she again showed speed and this time held down the place spot. Can take this group wire-to-wire. 2nd pick: #3 (Bajan Kitty) - Returns from a half-years absence when she showed some speed in a race at a MSW level. Has several good works for a trainer (Mike Machowsky) who wins at a 20% rate with his returnees. 3rd pick: #5 (Jaylo's Mark) - Trainer Jeff Mullins adds blinkers (a 29% move) and filly will be making start number two (a 19% win rate for the fine conditioner). She raced wide in her debut from a very tough post (12) and finished evenly. 4th pick: #7 (Dancing Erin) - Makes her debut after some great training sessions including a pair of fast "gate" works. Win-early sire is known for passing on "speed" to his runners. ![]() Horse Racing Picks Resources:
