Santa Anita Horse Racing - December 11, 2007It was a "super" day at Calder yesterday as we hit both the trifecta (1-5-3) for $101.40 and the superfecta (1-5-3-6) for $598 in race No. 7! We'll make our first foray into Tampa Bay Downs, as this is the second day of their long winter into spring meet. We have selections and analysis on five of today's races. Today's Best Bet is #5 El Gran Tony in Race #5 at Tampa Bay Downs. Monday's Results: Calder Race #5 Top and second picks were scratched.
Calder Race #7 Exacta 2nd Pick with Top Pick (1-5) Paid $36.80. Trifecta (1-5-3) Paid $101.40. Superfecta (1-5-3-6) Paid $299. Today's Horse Racing Picks: (# 4) KILLARNY TOWNSHIP - Could be the fastest of these early and by the looks of the last pair of works, she likes it here just fine. The drill on Dec. 8 is outstanding. (# 8) Aqua Azul - Claimed out of his debut from Eddie Plesa, he has shown speed in all his starts. Nice work here on Dec. 4. Can stalk or try and clear. (# 9) Fly to Tampa - Heavily backed in debut, he raced in traffic mid-pack and raced evenly thereafter. Big improvement and big speed shown in second start, setting the pace and holding on well to finish second. (# 6) Invisible Decision - Claimed last out by Javier Contreras from Kate O'Connell for $32,000. Improved race that day after breaking slowly in her debut. Look for more improvement. TAMPA BAY Race #FIVE (2:15 PM Eastern) (# 5) EL GRAN TONY - Both grass races are very sharp, and son of "More Than Ready" looks like he can graduate today with a clean trip. Has worked three times in the past two weeks. (# 2) Iron Id - Firster by "Victory Gallop" debuts for a good barn (Joan Scott). Works are excellent, and trainer did well here last year. (# 10) Gibber's Gold - Son of "Horse Chestnut" should improve with the switch to the grass, as most of his sons and daughters do. (# 4) It's a Rap - Son of "Johannesburg" was cold on the board in Calder debut race sprinting on the dirt. Comes back quickly for start two, switches surfaces and is sent long. (# 13) True Blue Fingers - Needs several scratches to compete, but we'll include him in the unlikely event that he runs. Good chance for a trainer (Derek Ryan) who did fairly well here last year. TAMPA BAY Race #SIX (2:40 PM Eastern) (# 8) UNFOLDING WISH - Impressive in first start in Chicago with a snappy wire-to-wire win. Steinbrenner owned and bred filly will face pace pressure today, but she may be a good one. Trainer Dale Bennett does well at this meet. (# 5) Rachele R's Queen - Barn is one of the sharpest around. Filly has gotten better since Trainer Jamie Ness has taken over. Has had six weeks since her last race, and may be sharp today. (# 2) Phyl's Girl - Sharp in her last three at Charles Town including a good try against winners last out. Training well and draws the rail. (# 10) Pyrite Marci - Showed some promise in Ohio with a stakes placing against state-bred competition. Filly is training well for a barn that knows how to win. TAMPA BAY Race #SEVEN (3:10 PM Eastern) (# 6) INDYMINE - His recent a.m. work is just too good to ignore. Has a pair of very sharp moves over the Gulfstream strip. Barn (Wesley Ward) is always good with two-year-olds. Colt has run two distance events to begin his career. Drops to seven furlongs for this. (# 10) Preachin Heat - Think he'll run well at a good price. His experience and fact he has been a mile is a big plus. Post is great for his style, and he has a sharp drill at Gulfstream on Dec. 3. (# 7) Ohio's Way - Good efforts in last pair, one at Thistledown and one at Mountaineer. Seven-furlong distance should suit him well. (# 3) E T to the Moon - Showed some speed in Hawthorne debut against $25K claimers. Stumbled in next against maiden specials, but still showed speed. Think he'll run well. TAMPA BAY Race #NINE (4:05 PM Eastern) (# 10) SOMES SOUND - Bill White trainee has a good tactical gear, and at this track this post is good for his type. Not a lot of pace signed on, and he should receive a very favorable journey. The horse to beat. (# 3) Afleet Pardner - Dale Bennett runner has much more tactical speed than he showed in Hawthorne finale. Mid-pack type usually starts a move by the half - a recipe for success here. (# 2) John's Song - Makes his second start off the Tony Wilson claim. Consistent sort fits with these, but needs to try and get involved a bit sooner, as this course does not play well to deep closers. (# 6) Massasoit - Sharp in last pair off a layoff, he returns today from another 3.5 month rest. Has a good record over this surface (6-1-3-0) and a pair of recent sharp works.
