Horse Racing Picks - December 06, 2008

It was announced yesterday that "Wild Again" who won the innaugural "Breeder's Cup Classic" (G1) in 1984 was eutnanized on Friday morning due to the infirmities of old age. Son of "Ice Capade" defeated the heavily favored "Slew o'Gold" in that long-ago contest. A successful sire, he was pensioned in 2004 and lived out his days at Three Chimney's Farm where he had spent most of his career as a stallion. He won eight of 28 starts including several other grade 1 events and earned $2,204,629 - a hefty sum in late 80's money.

We'll mix it up a bit today with a pair from Calder and the Fair Grounds and one late contest from the "Big A."

Today's Best Bet is: #9 Rutherienne in Race #8 at Calder.

Friday's Results: Aqueduct Race #6 T-fecta (7-1-5) $114.00.
Super (7-1-5-3) $261.40.

Today's Horse Racing Picks:

AQUEDUCT Race #7 at 3:20 PM Eastern

Top pick: #5 (TAPIT'S BREW) - Colt has improved in each of his last pair with the switch to the turf. Had some traffic woes in his latest or he may have won. Sharp work on the Nov. 24 and he's the choice to break his maiden.
2nd pick: #7 (Get Stormy) - Freshened-up after a pair of good tries several months ago, he showed good speed in those two and he has a fast drill on Dec. 3, indicating he's ready to go.
3rd pick: #10 (Three Bridge Road) - Finished a sharp third in his debut on this course on Halloween. Poor race in the slop followed that. Move back to the infield should aid his cause.
4th pick: #3 (Sugar Forest) - Draws the hedge and he'll be returning from almost a two-month layoff. Showed some speed in his turf runs and trainer (Seth Benzel) has ben hot the past two months.
5th pick: #4 (En Fuego) - Didn't run at all in his debut at Belmont in early October. Freshsened-up since, he'll get blinkers on for a trainer (Chris Clement) who's good 21% second time out.

FAIR GROUNDS Race #5 at 3:25 PM Eastern
Top pick: #4 (PRINCESS WILMA) - Goes second off a layoff for a good barn (Troy Young). Broke her maiden two starts back and did it in style. Wide in her first against winners last out, she was forced even farther out in mid-stretch by a runner drifting while tiring, losing all chance. Comes back in less than three weeks and is well-spotted today to pick up win number two.
2nd pick: #2 (Gingee Won) - Very wide trip last out on a muddy track and she was not beaten all that much. Broke her maiden four starts back and she's trying to find her proper level. Think she'll run well.
3rd pick: #8 (Pickitup) - Finished second last out as a longshot and has been freshened-up (10 weeks) since that effort. She's been looking for a spot and think she'll be competitive here.

CALDER Race #8 (THE MY CHARMER(G3)) at 3:30 PM Eastern
Top pick: #9 (RUTHERIENNE) - Filly is three-for-three on this Calder turf and she's a bit of a 1 1/8th mile specialist. Freshened-up for several months, that scenario has produced a pair of stakes wins the last time trainer Chris Clement gave her some time off. She's beaten better fields than this in the past and she's the choice for the win.
2nd pick: #6 (Wild Promises) - She's won five of her last six and with the majority of them coming in stakes. Turf record is great and she's the main danger.
3rd pick: #4 (Callwood Dancer) - Has a nice early gear and she looks like the horse that will set the pace. Could hang around a long time.
4th pick: #2 (Jeux de Danse) - Speedy filly is undefeated on this turf course, though they have come against weaker. Has good speed and an inside post to utilize it from. Like almost all arrivals to his barn, trainer Marty Wolfson has improved this veteran.
Special Race Notes: If on the main-track the selections are: #9-Rutherienne #7-Snow Cone #11-Waquoit's Love

FAIR GROUNDS Race #7 at 4:20 PM Eastern
Top pick: #9 (STORM TRUST) - Steve Asmussen trained runner was "cooked" in a speed duel last out in his first start here after shipping from Remington Park. Drops into a claimer and think he's faster and better than these.
2nd pick: #6 (Classic Robbery) - Hung a bit in the slop last out when facing $30K foes. Drops in half for this and is well spotted for a good shot at the win. P. Val dosen't hurt his chances.
3rd pick: #4 (Ax Man) - Won his last to advance to this level. Competitive sort, he's improving his overall game and could impact the exotics.
4th pick: #3 (Wadi Suki) - He's hit the board in all six tries at this 3L condition. Veteran trainer Joe Duhon has him working well and he's a late threat to crash the party.

CALDER Race #10 (THE TROPICAL TURF H.(G3)) at 4:25 PM Eastern
Top pick: #2 (SOLDIER'S DANCER) - Obvious selection loves this course and distance and his latest is a "toss" after losing his rider at the start. Pace scenario looks solid and that would certainly help his late running style out. The pick.
2nd pick: #6 (Ballast) - Veteran has won this race the past two years, so trainer Graham Motion has no doubt pointed him towards it again. He's in great form and has faced only the best over the past several seasons. Win contender.
3rd pick: #4 (Spice Route) - Canadian runner from the barn of Roger Attfield has improved since coming under the veteran conditioner's care. Cuts back in distance and he's a solid contender.
4th pick: #3 (It's a Bird) - Better on the dirt, but his trainer has pulled off many stakes wins in the past with overlooked runners. Has some speed and a good post to use it from. Price play in the exotics.
