Horse Racing Picks - December 02, 2008

Major tracks will re-open tomorrow after a pair of "dark" days.

With Calder closed today, we have three races from Philadelphia Park and a pair from Turf Paradise.

Today's Best Bet is #2 Hollywood Adviser in Race #2 at Turf Paradise.

Monday's Results: Calder Race #7 Top Pick #3 (Michael's West Acre) $6.20.
Ex. (3-8) $16.20.

Calder Race #8 Top Pick #6 (Sweetlandofliberty) $4.60.

Philadelphia Park Race #9 Ex. (10-5) $27.80.

Today's Horse Racing Picks:

TURF PARADISE Race #2 at 2:30 PM Eastern

Top pick: #2 (HOLLYWOOD ADVISER) - Gelding makes his return to this circuit after spending the better part of the year in No. California. When last seen here he was making easy work of a 1X allowance field on this turf course last April. Working well and will be making his first start for trainer Keith Bennett, a 30% winning angle.
2nd pick: #8 (Sylvan Hill) - Another making his way from the No. Cal circuit, though unlike the top pick, he's never raced around these parts. This will only be his second turf try, but he's now with trainer Mike Chambers and he wins with 34% of his "new" arrivals.
3rd pick: #4 (Folio) - The third member of the No. California contingent. In-shape with a pair of recent starts and he's run well recently on the grass. Dangerous and may be a square price.
4th pick: #1 (Purple Jewel) - Gelded son of "Mr. Purple" has spent his entire career racing on the dirt. Stakes placed several times in Idaho, he was claimed last out by Dave Van Winkle who is known for his "turf" prowess.

PHILADELPHIA PARK Race #7 at 2:55 PM Eastern
Top pick: #6 (SMIRK) - Gelded son of "Distorted Humor" was a very expensive yearling ($240,000) and has had his share of physical woes along the way. Claimed on opening day of this year's Saratoga meet, he was sent in for three months of rest by his new trainer (Tony Dutrow). He finished second in his return run at this tag, then raced evenly last out in a starter-allowance. Goes third off the rest and drops back into a $25K claimer. The horse to beat.
2nd pick: #5 (Light Sentence) - This lightly-raced son of "Vindication" is also trained by Tony Dutrow, but the rivals will compete as separate betting interests. Blinkers will go on today and colt has some speed to utilize.
3rd pick: #8 (Grand Assasin) - Tired in a 3X allowance in the Charles Town slop last out after chasing the pace while very wide. He's raced with success at this $25K tag in the past and is now in a dangerous barn (Tim Hooper).
4th pick: #2 (Weekend Games) - Speedy runner will drop in class today and will be making his third start after being on the sidelines for six months. Could be in it all the way at a nice price.

TURF PARADISE Race #3 at 3:00 PM Eastern
Top pick: #10 (GOLD DAKOTA) - Improving with each start, he just missed last out in a three horse "blanket-photo" at this tag and distance on November 4. Lightly raced, in a good barn (Joe Toye) and draws the best post for this distance. Tough to beat.
2nd pick: #7 (But I Know Andy) - Finished a fine second last out in his first race in four months and first for trainer Kevin Lewis. Tracked a fast pace, had some traffic woes and closed late when clear. Race is the best last out of any, and a repeat makes him the main danger.
3rd pick: #1 (Most Decorated) - "Eased" in his last start at Golden Gate, he's sent here and drops to a career low in claiming price. Late finisher is in a good barn (Keith Craigmyle) and he could easily impact this "bottom" group.
4th pick: #6 (Can Man) - Gelded son of "Cee's Tizzy" has yet to finish in the money in 10 lifetime starts. He has a lot of speed and in his last pair finished a close-up fourth at this tag and distance. May be approaching a peak race in his third start on this surface.

PHILADELPHIA PARK Race #8 at 3:20 PM Eastern
Top pick: #8 (BOSS TIFFANY) - Claimed at Sartoga by trainer Tony Dutrow, he immediately sent her in for some R & R. Veteran raced evenly in her return run at Belmont, then demolished a field on this surface last out in the best performance of her career. This field's a bit tougher, but if able to repeat her latest, she'll get her picture taken again.
2nd pick: #1 (Red Hot Jazz) - Speedy filly is in a very good barn (Steve Klesaris). Easily cleared the 2X allowance level on this surface two back, then tired after pressing a fast pace in a turf-sprint stakes at the Meadowlands. Has the rail and the best early speed.
3rd pick: #3 (Hi Beautiful) - Professional sprinter is at home going "short" on both dirt and turf. She's won on this main-track in the past and comes into this contest sharp and in-shape. Her speed should have her in it all the way.

PHILADELPHIA PARK Race #9 at 3:50 PM Eastern
Top pick: #4 (LA MINSTRAL) - California invader is lightly raced and comes here to the leading trainer's barn (Scott Lake). Gelded son of "Thunder Gulch" has a good closing kick and has finshed second and third in his only previous starts on conventional dirt. The horse to beat.
2nd pick: #6 (Valridge) - Colt just missed last out at this price travelling nine furlongs. Effort was only his second back off a five-month rest and stamps him as a major player in this field.
3rd pick: #7 (Lexington Rae) - Nicely-bred colt ("Minardi") has finished "in-the-money" in three of his six distance races. His experience should land him a part of this at the end.
4th pick: #1 (Illya Kuraykin.) - Improving, has some speed, and he draws the rail. Contender for the exotics, but the top trio are more likely to be victorious.
