Kentucky Derby Picks - December 01, 2008Welcome to the month of December. Racing schedules will vary a bit with the advent of "winter" post times, but our Newsletter will continue to offer five races daily with most coming after 3:00 p.m. EST to accomodate our subscribers throughout the different time-zones. Today, we have three races from Calder and a pair from Philadelphia Park. Today's Best Bet is #6 Open Sleigh in Race #9 at Philadelphia Park. Sunday's Results: Four of our top picks finished second, two at Aqueduct and one each at Hollywood Park and the Fair Grounds.  Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #3 (MICHAELS WEST ACRE) - Speedy gelding will be moving from turf to dirt and shortening up in distance. Ran well two back on the dirt at this level and the recent longer race could give him some much needed stamina. 2nd pick: #8 (Senor Pedro) - Well-bet in his debut on October 24, colt broke poorly and had to be rushed into a very fast pace before tiring late. Drops in value and has a pair of solid drills since. Very dangerous. 3rd pick: #7 (Galloping Thunder) - Debut runner by "Victory Gallop" has some nice drills showing for a pretty good barn (Dave Braddy). 4th pick: #2 (Shiftin Gears ) - Bargain priced colt ($3000) has a recent pair of three-furlong gate drills that indicate that some speed is present. Barn (Steve DiMauro) knows how to have one ready. PHILADELPHIA PARK Race #8 at 3:20 PM Eastern Top pick: #4 (TZIPI) - Speedy veteran always gives her all. She's had another solid season (15-4-4-4) and she's coming off a nice win on this course in the mud against starter-allowance foes. Speed/stalker should be in this from start-to-finish. 2nd pick: #8 (Stars Portent) - Filly has won her last pair in easy fashion, the latest one, at this distance, on this track. Both of those wins were on sloppy tracks and she'll likely get another one today. Very dangerous. 3rd pick: #1 (Blowing Kisses) - Lightly-raced filly is coming off a pair of fine tries at this level after coming back from a 2 1/2 month layoff. In her latest, she rallied late after being shuffled back on the turn and finished second beaten by a length. Contender. 4th pick: #9 (Erin's Golden Star) - Daughter of "Cat Thief" showed some talent in 2007 when she was two-years-old. She hasn't raced since Oct. of '07, but her works indicate that she's ready to perform well. CALDER Race #8 at 3:40 PM Eastern Top pick: #3 (SAFETY SQUEEZE) - Runner has improved noticeably since lasix was added two starts ago. Just missed at this distance two back, and broke his maiden last out sprinting. Both of those efforts were on the turf and he looks to be a runner that has really found himself. 2nd pick: #6 (Sweetlandofliberty) - Talented colt finished second on the dirt last out at this distance in his first try against winners. Sharp maiden win two back at this distance on the turf, suggests that he's a major force today. 3rd pick: #2 (My Daddio) - Speedy colt is steadily getting better and looked very sharp in breaking his maiden sprinting on the dirt October 25. Tries winners, the turf, and a distance - all for the first time. Working solidly and is a force on the front end. 4th pick: #4 (Abe is Honest) - Rallied from far back in his latest to break his maiden on the turf at this distance. No speed runner had a very fast pace to rally into may not be as fortunate today. Late threat. PHILADELPHIA PARK Race #9 at 3:50 PM Eastern Top pick: #6 (OPEN SLEIGH) - Son of "Touch Gold" has spent the majority of his career on the New York circuit facing much better. Sent here in early October, he's finished a strong second in both his outings at this tag and distance. Graduation day. 2nd pick: #5 (Enlightened Cat) - Runner has improved since being dropped in claiming price and being sent to the barn of Phil Aristone. Trainer sends him long today after a pair of solid sprint tries. 3rd pick: #1 (American Citizen) - Kentucky invader has some speed and draws the rail as he stretches-out off a return sprint at Churchill Downs. Drops to a career low and this gelding has been bet heavily a couple of times. 4th pick: #10 (Briansbrothersean) - Rallied late on November 18, to finish second in what was the best race of his career. That was a sprint and he'll need to carry that form into a distance event. CALDER Race #9 at 4:10 PM Eastern Top pick: #3 (PEACEFUL TIGER) - Filly is showing more speed as she descends in claiming price. Last out she finished third at this tag and distance after starting from a wide post(11) and being forced well out into the track around the far turn. Better draw today and she's a wire-to-wire threat. 2nd pick: #10 (Pabst Annie) - Takes a huge drop in price off a debut that saw her flash good speed against much tougher. To go along with the plunge in class, trainer Phil Gleaves will add blinkers to her equipment. Big threat. 3rd pick: #1 (Field Patrol) - Claimed last out off a third place finish going long for the first time. Runs back at the same price and he'll shorten back to a sprint. Draws the rail and should be in it at the end. 4th pick: #7 (We Shall Dance) - Continues to plug along, but she' not getting any better. Could hit the exotic bottoms at a square price.
