Horse Handicapper - August 27, 2008Labor Day weekend is almost upon us and with it the last several days of the Saratoga racing season. Current Horse of the Year "Curlin" will run on Saturday at the Spa. in the $500,000 "Woodward" stakes in what may be his his next to last trip to the gate. Today we will return to Saratoga for selections and analysis of four races. Today's Best Bet is #7 Ofcr. Sheila T. Rex in Race #3 at Saratoga. Tuesday's Results: Delaware ParK Race #1 Exacta (2-1) $41.60. Delaware Park Race #7 Top Pick #3 (Free Up Grade) $3.20. Ex (3-6) $7.40. Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #7 (SOLUTIONIST) - Excellent debut speed shown at Belmont on July 17 against MSW foes. Working well since and trainer Richard Dutrow drops him into a claimer today. Strong stats are visible for the conditioner on the drop (25%) and with the maidens in particular (27%). 2nd pick: #5 (Thats a Good Thing) - Missed by a neck in his best start to date on August 6. Improving with each start, trainer Steve Asmussen adds blinkers today to try and put runner over the top. 3rd pick: #2 (Retriever) - Well-backed in his debut on August 6, runner had serious traffic issues in mid stretch while racing in between runners, blinkers are removed and he has a fast work on August 21. 4th pick: #3 (Frosty Diamond) - He ran well in his New York debut after shipping from Calder. Colt has the ability to pass other runners and that's a plus in this lightly-raced field. SARATOGA Race #3 at 2:05 PM Eastern Top pick: #7 (OFCR. SHEILA T REX) - Drops into a claimer for the first time, goes turf-to-dirt, and makes her second start off a long layoff. Lots of things to like including her trainer, Linda Rice, who's having a great meet. 2nd pick: #1 (Calling My Colors) - Speedy type draws the rail and will try and win this early. Last was her best yet as she showed some fighting spirit. Her trainer, veteran Howie Tesher is one-for-60 this year. 3rd pick: #5 (Last Desire) - Finished evenly for this tag at Belmont two back and filly has a very interesting drill on August 24 that says she's a big player. 4th pick: #3 (Scarletobsession) - Longshot has three races behind her and will race "tagged" for the first time. Filly could impact the tri at a big price. SARATOGA Race #9 at 5:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #4 (EXCESS CAPITAL) - Ambitiously spotted in a stakes last out and didn't run badly considering the level of competition. Drops back in with maidens and will try the grass for the first time. Big win contender. 2nd pick: #6 (He Struck It Rich) - Well-bred individual has hit the board in four of his six starts, all on the turf. Has enough speed to stay close and if he avoids trouble is a big-win threat. 3rd pick: #7 (Bostoner) - Colt is bred for the turf and will try that surface for the first time today. Well-bet in his four starts, he'll be coming off a seven-week freshening for a sharp trainer in Dale Romans. 4th pick: #8 (Formidable) - Works for Hall of Famer Allen Jerkens are outstanding and colt obviously has speed if his drills are the real thing. This field drew tough and he'll need to break running. 5th pick: #10 (Whitley) - Ships from Arlington for trainer Rusty Arnold and and he's shown some talent in his first pair. Factor at a good price. SARATOGA Race #10 at 6:00 PM Eastern Top pick: #8 (ODE TO REVOLUTION) - Stretches-out to a distance on the grass after a series of good turf sprints at Belmont and the last effort here. Can either go to the front or rate just off the top and win this at a square price in a great betting contest. 2nd pick: #5 (Sammy's Toys) - Excellent try last out in his second start of the year. Runner is consistent and has a nice stalking style. Contender for all the money slots. 3rd pick: #1 (Calagaitor) - Deep closer may get a good pace scenario to help his one-run style out. Draws the hedge and fits this group. 4th pick: #9 (He Ain't Easy) - Runner was talented enough last year to finish second to "The Leopard" who was highly thought of at the time. Runner had problems in his latest at Belmont on June 13 and has been freshened up since. Training well and he could impact this at a nice price. 5th pick: #4 (Howdyamissthisone) - Improving sort finally broke his maiden last out at Monmouth in start number 17.
