Free Kentucky Derby Picks - August 22, 2008Saturday's 139th running of the $1,000,000 Travers Stakes is probably the most competitive running of the "Midsummer Derby" I have ever seen on paper. A field of 12 very evenly-matched three-year-olds will contest the 1 1/4 mile distance. Post Time is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. (EST) and the race will be televised nationally. Today we have selected four races from Saratoga for selections and analysis. Today's Best Bet is #1 Cocktail Attire in Race #4 at Saratoga. Thursday’s Results: Saratoga Race #3 Top Pick #1a (Success Fee) $4.10. Saratoga Race #8 Best Bet #1 (Wait A While) $3.70. Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #1 (GLOBILIZATION) - Has speed to employ and will do so from the avantageous rail post going 1 1/8th miles. Working sharply on the local surface and runner is offered up for a tag for the first time. The choice for the win. 2nd pick: #4 (High Brass) - Runner has improved noticeably with the addition of lasix two starts back from "Hall of Famer" Allen Jerkens. Trainer has always been one of the best at sending his stock long, and this colt is very dangerous. 3rd pick: #2 (Jumpthebandwagon) - Solid colt ships in from Delaware for a trainer (Tony Pecoraro) who wins wherever he races. Well-spotted, and Dominguez is enlisted for runner who should be close-up through out. SARATOGA Race #2 at 1:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #2 (CONCORDE'S DANCE) - Bred for the grass and three of her four "siblings" have won on the infield. Filly raced evenly in an "off the turf" event here on August 11, and comes back quickly for start number two. Grass works are solid and filly draws the hedge. 2nd pick: #6 (Dream Express) - Heavily bet in her Ellis Park debut going a mile. Daughter of "Bernstein" raced evenly and finished well to be beaten by less than three lengths. Lasix and Albarado are employed today. 3rd pick: #3 (Skip Away Belle) - Has some speed and has a sharp turf drill on August 1. Trainer (Wesley Ward) has had a good meet (five for 16) and I would anticipate this filly to be in front early. 4th pick: #1 (Platinum Girl) - Bargain priced ($40,000) daughter of "Mineshaft" has been in steady training at Saratoga for the Todd Pletcher barn since late May. Works are good on both grass and dirt and she could impact this in her debut. 5th pick: #4 (She's From Queens) - George Arnold-trained filly goes dirt-to-turf and is also sent long off an uneventful debut sprinting on July 28. Price should be right. SARATOGA Race #4 at 2:35 PM Eastern Top pick: #1 (COCKTAIL ATTIRE) - The main speed and filly also has the advantage of the rail. Set a fast pace on August 3, at this distance on this surface and was run down late by a good-looking winner. Daughter of "Distorted Humor" was making her first start since early January and should be set for her best. 2nd pick: #6 (Artistic Talent) - Talented filly has been looking for a suitable spot for over a month. Daughter of "Aptitude" raced strongly in her California grass races and has trained sharply during the past two months after shipping east. 3rd pick: #4 (Elusive Moment) - Goes third off a layoff and will be cutting back in distance after showing speed at Belmont going longer last out. Working fast and Coa takes the ride. 4th pick: #3 (Grand Finesse) - Daughter of "Grand Slam" has only a single start on her resume, a dirt run at Churchill in early July. Filly showed some speed that day and she'll be switching to the turf today for start number two. SARATOGA Race #6 at 3:40 PM Eastern Top pick: #5 (CRITICAL CATHY) - Lightly raced and talented, she has exhibited ability since day one and only now may be approaching her peak. Working well and this 6.5-furlong distance seems made for her. The horse to beat. 2nd pick: #4 (Dancing Fern) - Defeated "open" foes at Delaware and fact is that this will be her first start against fellow state-bred competition. Talented, and she has a nice stalking style. Dangerous rival. 3rd pick: #1 (Greg's Lassy) - Fast and fit, she draws the rail and will no doubt attempt a "theft." Her latest drill is good and she'll be making her third start off the bench. 4th pick: #10 (Smokin Sarah) - Draws a nice post for her stalking tactics and four-year-old is coming off a sharp win that saw her defeat the rail runner.
