Best Horse Racing Systems - August 21, 2008

The $1,000,000 Travers Stakes at Saratoga this Saturday drew a filed of 12 three-year-olds, with "Tale of Ekati" drawing the rail and "Pyro" having a difficult 11 post from which to try and win from.  Race will be the 11th of 12 on a card that will feature three other important stakes. Post Time for the "Travers" is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. (EST) and it will be televised.

Today we have another four contests from Saratoga for selections and analysis.

Today's Best Bet is #1 Wait a While in Race #8 at Saratoga.

Today's Horse Racing Picks:

SARATOGA Race #3 at 2:05 PM Eastern

Top pick: #1 (NO LIEN HERE) - Triple Crown nominee showed good speed in all four of his races earlier this year on the west coast. Colt hasn't raced since mid-March, but has been working fast for his return run and also his first race ever on real dirt.
2nd pick: #1a (Success Fee) - Coupled with the top pick and only one will compete. Most of his races have been of the "longer" variety, but he is a threat here if the connections decide to go with him.
3rd pick: #3 (Above All Odds) - Allen Jerkens-trained colt will be shortening up and going turf-to-dirt for this attempt. Lightly raced and appears to be reaching racing fitness. Dangerous rival.
4th pick: #8 (Analyze Cat) - Gelding hasn't raced since Oct. of '07 when he made his only career appearance. Works are good and trainer Bruce Levine is fine with a layoff of this length (27%).

SARATOGA Race #4 at 2:35 PM Eastern
Top pick: #9 (TINTED MOON) - Think filly can cause a mild upset coming off a nine-month layoff. Ran her best race ever in her '07 finale and faces a rather "ordinary" group here for the level. Draws a nice post and looks ready off the bench.
2nd pick: #6 (Key Trip) - Chased the winner last out, bid, continued to try hard, but was out-finished late. Filly runs at the same conditions today and is a major player.
3rd pick: #5 (Prominent) - Excellent try on July 31, in her first race since late March. Tracked the pace and rallied along the rail to finish second in the same race as "Key Trip". Factors again today.
4th pick: #2 (Live Life Outloud) - Daughter of "Mt. Livermore" drops and switches surfaces for the Todd Pletcher barn. Raced o.k. in her debut and will get the addition of blinkers here.

SARATOGA Race #5 at 3:10 PM Eastern
Top pick: #8 (WESTERN DYNAMO) - Drops into a claimer for the first time and he's already run this demanding distance several times. The class drop is a big one and he'll also be going third off a layoff.
2nd pick: #7 (Westward Go) - Wide trip in his Spa. debut on July 6, no doubt cost him doing better. Fits with these, draws a good post, and trainer Dave Donk adds blinkers.
3rd pick: #5 (Chauvinist) - Had a poor post last out but still managed to rally late to finish a fast-closing fourth. Goes third off a layoff, and is a big player.
4th pick: #4 (Silver Maker) - Makes his first start since late June. Claimed two back by his current trainer (Joe Imperio) from Richard Dutrow for $45,000. Runner has some speed in a race without much and that alone puts him in the mix. Price should be right.

SARATOGA Race #8 (THE BALLSTON SPA. HDCP.) at 4:55 PM Eastern
Top pick: #1 (WAIT A WHILE) - The champ probably needed her last as she hadn't raced in seven months. Mare has worked well since her return in the "Diana" (G1), and she also draws the hedge. Unless she's slipped a bit, this is her race to lose.
2nd pick: #3 (Sharp Susan) - Solid runner looked sharp in winning a stake at Philly Park last out and has been pretty steady since early in '07. Stalker may get a good trip here as the pace will not favor the deep-closers.
3rd pick: #2 (Valbenny) - Finished second to "Susan" last out with no visible excuse. Pace will not be to her advantage and she would only appear to be an exotics player today.
