Free Horse Racing Picks - August 20, 2008This Saturday is the 139th running of the $1,000,000 Travers stakes, always the highlight of the six-week meet at Saratoga. A field of ten is likely to be entered, with the list of the probables: "Harlem Rocker", "Da'Tara", "Tale of Ekati", "Colonel John", Macho Again", "Pyro", "Tres Borrachos", "Mambo in Seattle", "You and I Forever", and "Akai". Today we will stay exclusively at the "Spa" for our four selections. Today's Best Bet is: #3 Almighty Silver in race #9 at Saratoga. Tuesday's Results: Delaware Race #2 Top Pick #5 (Cape Girl) $7.00. Philadelphia Park Race #6 Exacta (2-7) $45.80. Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #2 (FLIBBERJIBIT) - Trainer (Mike Maker) is having an outstanding meet and this filly looks well set-up for a big try. She makes her third start of the season and drops in class after facing better in her first try against winners. Working swiftly for this attempt. 2nd pick: #1 (Wild Logic) - Drops off a two-month freshening for the Contessa barn. Has some speed and like many of the conditioner's runners, she's been in steady training here for some time. Latest workout is fast. 3rd pick: #1a (My Lucky Penney) - Coupled with "Wild Logic", filly finished a solid third on August 3, for this tag after breaking slowly. Fits, and has been competitive at this price on many occasions. 4th pick: #8 (Soul Violins) - Tired against better on July 24, in her first try against winners. Maiden win at Belmont in prior run was visually impressive and she attracts Coa today on a significant drop-down. SARATOGA Race #2 at 1:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #8 (SNEAK PEEK) - Well backed in his debut, son of "Hold That Tiger" pressed the pace and held well until deep stretch. Trainer (Ken McPeek) is very strong second time out (34%), and he also adds lasix today - a move he has been successful at with five of his last 11 times. 2nd pick: #2 (Seal Team) - Lasix is also added to this son of "Trippi" who sprinted in an off-the-turf contest on July 25. Training well, he gets to run on the grass and also goes long off the debut. Barn (Al Stall) is very sharp wherever they race. 3rd pick: #7 (Mike From Queens) - Good debut speed shown sprinting on the dirt at Belmont July 17. Continues to train well and goes to the grass and runs long today with lasix added. The lasix angle is a huge one for trainer Bruce Levine, a 43% winning move. 4th pick: #5 (Umbra) - Debuts for trainer Todd Pletcher off some serious-looking drills both on the dirt and grass courses. Works indicate that talent is most definitely present. SARATOGA Race #7 at 4:05 PM Eastern Top pick: #10 (FULLMONGOOSE) - Runner was sent from the Northern California circuit earlier this season to trainer Greg DiPrima. Owned by the top barn of Richard Englander, colt ran here on August 1st in his first start in six months. Stumbled badly at the break that day and raced evenly. Drops in half today and draws a good post for the distance. Ready to run big. 2nd pick: #9 (Metulla) - Son of "Yonaguska" goes second off a two month layoff for trainer Bruce Levine. Colt has some speed and raced well in his return off the break here on July 30th. Should be much "tighter" in his second off the break. 3rd pick: #5 (Secret Design) - Four-year-old will be making his first start since last December. Son of "Quiet American" ran well many times in "07" without getting the job done. He'll need to be sharp off the long rest to compete for the win. 4th pick: #8 (Fenaghville) - Shortens up and goes turf to dirt today for trainer Mike McDonald. Litely raced colt has shown some ability and should be nearing a "peak" run off the grass races. SARATOGA Race #9 (THE ALBANY) at 5:10 PM Eastern Top pick: #3 (ALMIGHTY SILVER) - Nice competitive stakes on tap. Runner did everything he could in the "New York Derby" at Finger Lakes, but the winner and today's rival, "Tin Cup Chalice" had things go his way up-front that day. There's other pace lined up for this and that will lead to a huge race by this colt. Scores a mild upset. 2nd pick: #2 (Writingonthewall) - Speedy and talented, look for this lightly-raced gelding to try and win this on the front-end with his inside draw. Improving and dangerous. 3rd pick: #1 (Overextended) - Has already run this demanding distance at this meet and finished a solid third that day. Second place runner that day, "Lorccan", won impressively here the other day. Experienced and long-winded, this colt has the rail advantage and could impact this at a nice price. 4th pick: #7 (Big Truck) - Survivor of the Triple Crown trail will be making his first start since the Kentucky Derby.
