Kentucky Derby Handicapping - August 15, 2008A reminder that Del Mar's post is late on Friday so our race from there will not be until 7:30 EST. We also have a trio from Saratoga. Today's Best Bet is #5 Main Street in Race #3 at Saratoga. Thursday’s Results: Saratoga Race #2 Ex (5-3) $28.40. Saratoga Race #3: Ex. (4-5) $5.60. Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #7 (CIELO SONG) - Goes turf-to-dirt and will make his first start for trainer Gary Contessa off a claim here on August 4. Dirt seems fine off some of his races earlier this year and he could surprise them at a square price. 2nd pick: #6 (Fort Apache Star) - Winner over the course on opening week, he's run well in all of his starts for trainer John Fahey since a claim in early May. Big threat right back. 3rd pick: #1 (Acclimate) - Makes his first start off a recent Enrique Arroyo claim from Gary Contessa. He was returning from a three-month layoff, so he could improve on a couple of angles. 4th pick: #3 (Casual) - Scott Lake runner is consistent on the mid-Atlantic circuit and brings some speed/stalking ability to the contest. Runner is a real consistent sort (61-11-15-8) and should be involved from start to finish. SARATOGA Race #2 at 1:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #6 (AT ATTENTION) - Nice second place finish last out for this tag on this surface. Race was his first for trainer Bruce Brown off a June claim from the Mott barn. Stalker gets a nice set-up here and is the horse to beat. 2nd pick: #1 (Estimator) - Continues to plug along and has six minor awards in his last seven starts. Has the rail and style indicates that a ground saving trip will lead to another "money" finish. 3rd pick: #7 (Api Mohkat) - Runs for a "straight" tag for the first time since he was a maiden. Colt had some promise at one time, but has been hindered by gaps in his racing days. May run well with a good post and some speed to bring. 4th pick: #3 (Charging Hero) - Freshened up since late June after a busy winter/spring campaign. He takes a class drop off the break and fits well if ready to compete. SARATOGA Race #3 at 2:00 PM Eastern Top pick: #5 (MAIN STREET) - Talented well-bred filly, has exhibited plenty of ability in her short racing career. Daughter of "Street Cry" has a bright future and should be stakes bound soon. Filly trained by Bruce Levine has a very sharp work on August 10 leading up to this. 2nd pick: #1 (Oniyome) - Defeated the top pick last out only to be taken down for interference. Lightly raced and in a great barn (Mike Hushion) she is a legitimate danger. 3rd pick: #2 (New York Citi) - Filly has been freshened up since putting together five in a row earlier this year at Finger Lakes. She's won on this circuit before and is working "lights-out" at her home base for this. Filly could hit the exacta and maybe more. DEL MAR Race #3 at 7:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #1 (DANCING MICA) - Makes her first start since last December and therefore her first as a three-year-old today. Daughter of "Unusual Heat" showed good speed in her three starts in '07 and is working sharply for her return. Wire-to-wire threat from the rail. 2nd pick: #9 (MY Sister Laureen) - Filly has finished second in her last pair for this tag at Hollywood Park. Pair of sharp recent works here indicate she's a win contender. 3rd pick: #8 (Good Shot Mally) - Daughter of "Indian Charlie" hasn't raced since a start on the Santa Anita lawn this past March. Working well for her return, she resides in a top barn (Doug O'Neill). 4th pick: #5 (Kristen's Belle) - Makes her return off a long layoff (11 months) for trainer Art Sherman. Works are o.k., but she may be using this as a prep for something longer. Horse Racing Picks Resources:
