Horse Racing Best Bets - August 12, 2008Hope you enjoy the new feature in our selections, as we will offer "alternate" picks in turf races in the event that the contest is switched from the grass to the dirt surface. Today with the major centers closed, we'll concentrate on Delaware Park for our races. Today's Best Bet is #5 Estrella Victoria in Race #6 at Delaware Park. Monday's Results: Saratoga Race #1 Top Pick #1 (Golden Glen) $3.80. Saratoga Race #5 Exacta (6-2) $65.50. Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #6 (CRUSINWITHCHARLIE) - Runner takes a major plunge in value today going from $25,000 all the way down to $10K. He has plenty of speed, but with old- timer "Sir Ray" signed up he will probably elect to rate off of him. Tractable gelding has won from a stalking spot before. 2nd pick: #3 (Suave Baron) - Raced a bit dull last out following a pair of sharp tries in his return from 2 1/2 months of inaction. Drops slightly and has a nice stalking style that fits the race. 3rd pick: #4 (Sir Ray) - Tired in his return race after being away from action for 13 months. Appeared keyed-up in that race and obviously needed the effort. 20-time winner could easily move forward in a big way today. 4th pick: #5 (Tori Light) - He'll be running for his fourth different trainer in 2008, and he'll double in price off a recent claim by Pete Wasiluk. Likes this track (6-2-2-1) and runs from mid-pack. DELAWARE PARK Race #3 at 1:35 PM Eastern Top pick: #7 (PLEASANT) - Moves from the turf to the dirt and also drops back to a tag he has raced well at before. Looks to be nearing his best as this is start number five in '08 and the latest on the grass was encouraging. 2nd pick: #8 (Funny Book) - Comes out of three solid efforts against better and he draws a nice post for his stalking tactics. Needs to finish just a bit stronger. 3rd pick: #2 (Western Pirate) - Has a nice record on this surface this season (6-1-3-1) and all have come at this tag. Mid-pack style fits here and he's a late threat. 4th pick: #3 (Eddie Munsta) - Drops off a recent claim by Steve Eppley and he could be the main speed. West-coast transplant has run a pair of strong races on this surface since arriving. DELAWARE PARK Race #4 at 2:05 PM Eastern Top pick: #1 (JOANNE'S PAULUS) - Speedy gelding is coming off a narrow loss in his latest and he draws the rail which will help his overall chances. Accustomed to facing better, he's been sharp in his trio of starts at this $5000 level. 2nd pick: #4 (Grandpa's Brat) - Veteran stalker/speed type will be making his second start for the Lake barn. Solid second place finish off the claim two back and he is a serious win contender. I almost made him the top pick and they should be bet that way. 3rd pick: #6 (Bentrovhto) - Rallied late last out to get up for third in his first ever at this pricetag. He has a lot of back class and may be entering back into some semblance of his old form. 4th pick: #5 (Love That Song) - Makes his third start off a freshening, but was defeated by four lengths in his latest by the rail runner. Capable of hitting the board if he moves forward in his third off the bench. DELAWARE PARK Race #6 at 3:00 PM Eastern Top pick: #5 (ESTRELLA VICTORIA) - Strong effort in her last at this tag and distance as she stayed close-up, bid on the far turn to reach contention, but tired a bit in the last 1/16th. That was her first in seven weeks and it's encouraging to see her return quickly for this (14 days). Can win this from just off the lead. 2nd pick: #1 (Rock'n With Mary) - Drops back into a claimer, and two back at Piladelphia Park filly just missed when running for $40,000. Contender at a bit of a price. 3rd pick: #4 (Bouzy) - Daughter of "Smart Strike" hasn't seen action in 16 months. Debuted at Gulfstream Park in April of '07 and has been on the sidelines since. Top barn (Chris Clement) can have them ready off the bench and this field is "ordinary" at best for the level. 4th pick: #6 (Mean Sally) - She's run competitively on the turf at this tag, but she's already had 18 tries without getting the job done.
