Horse Racing Tipsters - August 09, 2008Yesterday, Saratoga cancelled its card after the second race due to a very heavy rain storm that caused damage to the track surface around the far-turn. That also wiped out three of our four plays that were written up on our Friday Newsletter. Today's races chosen for analysis and selections will consist of four from Saratoga and one from Del Mar. Today's Best Bet is #5 Stunt Man in Race #5 at Saratoga. Friday's Results: Saratoga Race #1 T-fecta (2-4-5) $76.50. The other three races we selected were lost to the cancellation of the card after Race # 2. Today's Horse Racing Picks: (# 5) RYAN'S COMET - Two of this colt's siblings won during their two-year-old season as did the dam. Home-bred from Stonerside Farms is trained by Todd Pletcher and the latest gate work was very sharp. (# 2) Flying Pirate - Good debut speed shown at Churchill was followed up with a troubled try here on opening day. Bet well in both starts, and he's both worked and raced on "off" tracks. (# 7) Fiorentino - Darley representative is working sharply and trainer (Kiaran McLaughlin) has alredy un-veiled some good looking youngsters at this meet. (# 3) Proud Ruler - Leading trainer from last season (Bill Mott) is off to a slow start, but he has a barnful of well-bred and fast working two-year-olds. Son of "Posse" has a pair of impressive a.m. moves earlier this summer. SARATOGA Race #FIVE (3:10 PM Eastern) (# 5) STUNT MAN - Speedy runner was "prepped" in a sprint here on July 31, with this as his real goal. Won the "Albany" on this track, at this distance last year, and looks well set up as a "fresh" horse to take this. (# 4) Building New Era - Whistled in an "off the turf" event last out in his first race in almost eight weeks. Claimed that day by Joe Aquilino with this race in mind, if the barn switch doesn't throw him "off his game," he could win this. (# 1) Stud Muffin - Returns off a late May layoff for trainer Dom Galluscio. Likes the two-turn nature of this contest and he's two-for-three at this particular distance. Rail draw is a plus. (# 3) Dr. D. F. C. - In career shape at present, he had a poor start in his latest, but recovered to race well and finish fourth to a runner, "Acai" who may be headed to the "Travers". SARATOGA Race #EIGHT (4:35 PM Eastern) (# 6) WOLGAN VALLEY - Son of "Mr. Greely" cost the Godolphin people $1,450,000 as a yearling in Sept. of '06. Colt finished second in all three of his races in England as a two-year-old last season. Training well for his first U.S. start and he runs with lasix for the first time. (# 1) Captivating Cat - Colt by "Storm Cat" hasn't seen action since March of 2007 when he finished second at Santa Anita in a sprint on real dirt. He's been in steady training at Saratoga since early June and will make his first start for Bill Mott today. (# 4) Darkside Holiday - Flashed speed in a pair of appearances last winter at Aqueduct and finished second in both. Freshened up by trainer Kiaran McLaughlin since late January, he wins at 20% with this type of returnee. (# 3) Original Six - Firster by "Forest Camp" cost owner Barry Schwartz $370,000 two years ago as a yearling. Drills are fast and numerous for a trainer (Mike Hushion) who wins at a fine 20% with his debut runners. SARATOGA Race #NINE (5:10 PM Eastern) (# 1) FOREST COMMAND - Just missed in his debut at Churchil at the demanding distance of seven furlongs for a first timer. Returned at the same track and distance in start number two and won in the slop in a good-looking performance. Well-bred, lightly raced, and in with great human connections. Working sharply since arriving here, he could be any kind. (# 5) Mr. Universe - Sharp maiden win at Belmont on May 10, was followed by a rather dull effort in his first try against winners. Freshened up since by trainer Jimmy Jerkens, he is training sharply for his return off the 33-day break. (# 7) Smart Hit - Field's biggest winner (four races) and also the one with the most experience. He's a recent arrival from California, but is old enough to have some conventional dirt races on the coast in his past (4-1-1-1). Training well, and in a hot barn (Bruce Levine). (# 9) Del Castillo Diaz - Freshened up since breaking his maiden at Belmont on June 4, this son of "Storm Bird" loves this particular distance (5-1-2-1) and should offer a good effort at a square price. DEL MAR Race #FIVE (7:00 PM Eastern) (# 8) ARASHI CAT - One of a pair from trainer Jeff Mullins and they will race un-coupled. This runner is working sharply and attracts one of the trainers "go-to" riders, Clinton Potts. When teamed up they win at a strong 27% and this colt will be the longer of the two odds-wise. (# 2) Party Hard - Good debut speed on view and runner held well to late stretch when he tired back into third. Race had a runaway winner and this colt stayed the closest to him most of the race. (# 7) Blazing Spirit - The second of the Mullins runners rallied from far back in his debut at long odds to finish second. "Ridgling" has worked fast since and is a win contender. (# 4) Freedom Ride - Longshot is from a good barn (Ron McAnally) and has an experience over the firsters who look like an ordinary lot once you look past the top choice. Could hit the exotics at a big price. Horse Racing Picks Resources:
