Betting Horse Line Racing - August 08, 2008

Mid-day thunderstorm yesterday turned the Saratoga main-track into a quagmire and forced the races off the turf. With Del Mar running a late card today, we'll take our four selections from Saratoga, but will limit them to scheduled dirt contests.

Today's Best Bet is #7 Smokin Hero in Race #7 at Saratoga.

Thursday's Results: Saratoga Race #3 Top Pick #3 (Wonderwho'sbest) $6.70.
Ex. (3-4) $20.60.
T-fecta (3-4-2) $128.50.

Del Mar Race #3 Top Pick # 4 (Onetimeatbandcamp) $3.60.
Ex. (4-1) $16.80.

Today's Horse Racing Picks:

SARATOGA Race #ONE (1:00 PM Eastern)

(# 4) MUTAKAWAY) - Barn (Bruce Levine) has really heated up the past few days and he brings this speedy filly back off a layoff at a much reduced price tag than she normally competes. Trainer wins at a strong 35% with his runners coming back from similar freshenings.
(# 7) Most Charming - Veteran has been first or second in close to half of her 61 lifetime starts. Deep-closer will need some pace help up front, but against this field she'll pick off some down the lane.
(# 5) Princess B G - Trainer John Fahey is two-for-five at the meet and if not for a huge favorite "ducking" in in Wednesday's third race, he would have had a third winner. This filly is a recent claim and Fahey wins back with 24% of his fresh buys.
(# 2) Ambling Rose - Fits, and draws a good post for her stalking tactics. Trainer Arroyo has continued to do good things all year.

SARATOGA Race #FOUR (2:30 PM Eastern)
(# 2) EARLE'S FIRST GIRL - Speedy runner draws the rail and will be making her first start since mid-June. Filly was claimed in her first race in New York by Steve Asmussen after she shipped from So. California. She's well-spotted off the rest and can take this from on or just off the top.
(# 4) Eightyfive S - Shortens up a furlong and goes from turf to dirt for trainer Mark Hennig. Race was her first against winners after a good-looking maiden win on the Belmont dirt June 13. It should be noted that she was soundly beaten by the top pick when they met in mid-May.
(# 1a) Hope Street - Looks to become a two-time winner at the meet as she won a $50K claimer in smart fashion on August 1. Overall she's won three of her last five and has done so in very consistent style.

SARATOGA Race #SIX (3:35 PM Eastern)
(# 3) BITABAZ - Well bet in his debut, gelded son of "Intidab" flashed some good speed before tiring late. He gets the addition of lasix from trainer Rich Schosberg today, and he's worked three times locally since his Belmont un-veiling.
(# 6) Shifty Guy - Debuts for Hall of Famer Allen Jerkens and runner has several works that indicate that good speed may be present. Trainer names Cornelio and that is s very strong combination, winning at 33% over the past two years.
(# 4) Mr. Peterson - Good speed shown in his debut in a race that included a pair of very promising youngsters. Blinkers are added today by trainer Bill Badgett and he has won with three of his last six runners making that move.
(# 1) Moonshine Mania - Good New Jersey barn sends this runner up to face fellow state-breds after facing "open" foes in his first pair at Monmouth. Blinkers are added and he draws the rail and Alan Garcia.

SARATOGA Race #SEVEN (4:10 PM Eastern)
(# 7) SMOKIN HERO - Impressive second place finishes in his first pair against good-looking winners makes him an instant win contender here. Big speed shown in both and a repeat of either may be enough to beat these.
(# 8) Paramedic - Fine debut run saw him stay close to the pace before tiring late to finish third, beaten 4 1/2 lengths by the top selection. He has a sharp work since and normal improvement in his second start could close that gap considerably.
(# 5) Scientist - Attracted Ramon Dominguez in his Delaware debut and colt was well-received at the windows. Broke slowly, was rushed into a fast pace and tired late. Dominguez sticks and runner faces fellow state-breds today.
(# 6) Triste Doble Q - He's been in training locally since mid-June and Contessa trained colt has several good-looking works for his debut.
