Horse Racing Tipsters - August 04, 2008

"Big Brown" was impressive in his win in the $1,000,000 "Haskel" stakes at Monmouth yesterday. He faced adversity as he looked beaten in mid-stretch only to dig in and find something extra to rally in the last 150 yards to get up for the win.

Today we'll concentrate on Saratoga for all four of our races.

Today's Best Bet is # 5 Persistent Penny in Race # 7 at Saratoga.

Today's Horse Racing Picks:

SARATOGA Race #THREE (2:05 PM Eastern)

(# 1) UNDER SERVICED - We thought she was the victim of an overconfident ride last out. Had the horse and just waited too long to ask her to run, and at that point was wide and was beaten by a runner closing up the rail. She's worked very fast on the local dirt and may try and win this early.
(# 6) Casey's Tribe - She's won two of her last three and in the other race was defeated soundly by our top pick. Last was pretty impressive as she overcame some trouble and final time was fast. Improving quickly and is a major danger to the choice.
(# 7) Western Sweep - Shortens up and goes turf-to-dirt for trainer Carlos Martin. Filly won a race here last season at this distance running for the same tag.
(# 5) Lets Fly Away - Makes her third start off a fall layoff when she had put a good-looking pair of wins back-to-back. Lightly raced and should be approaching her best.

SARATOGA Race #SIX (3:35 PM Eastern)
(# 9) PRINCESS WESTLY - Runs in a claimer for the first time since she was a maiden. Dale Romans-trained filly has been running against better in Kentucky and the drop in for a tag should produce a big effort.
(# 3) La Gioia Ditutti - Last pair are her two best ever and they have come after a recent change to the barn of Gary Sciacca. Trainer was always better with his turf stock and this filly is improving quickly at this stage.
(# 4) Stop the Drama - Lightly raced, has a hint of speed, likes turf (5-1-1-1), and is in a winning barn (Barclay Tagg). Threat with a stalking trip.
(# 7) Fiddlers Princess - Deep-closer will need a fast/contested pace to have a shot at the win. Total lack of speed is a big concern, but this field drew weaker than her recent Belmont runs for the same tag.

SARATOGA Race #SEVEN (4:05 PM Eastern)
(# 5) PERSISTENT PENNY - Looks well set-up by a barn (Wally Dollase) that usually wins one or two at this meet. Beautifully-bred daughter of "A.P. Indy" ran well in her last pair at Churchill and as you would expect is getting better with longer races. Takes this from just off the top.
(# 1) Great Thought - "Won" a race at Keeneland at this demanding nine-furlong distance, but was subsequently disqualified. Freshened up after an even turf try in late May at Belmont, she is working sharp for this return run and draws the all-important rail.
(# 4) Secret Source - Sharp connections, Will Farish/Neil Howard filly will be making her first start since early June. Gets to go two-turns again today, and her best race ever came at Churchill two back when doing just that.
(# 7) Equally - Has an experience edge as she's run a distance many times before. Most of her attempts have been on the grass, but in her latest she finished second at Belmont in a seven-furlong dirt contest.

SARATOGA Race #NINE (5:25 PM Eastern)
(# 2) ADRIANO - Accomplished turf runner had a poor post (10) in his latest at Colonial Downs and he raced wide most of the contest. Has shown an affinity for the infield in the past and has a great turf work on the August 26, to set him up for this run. Not only is he the lone entrant with a win on this course, he's the only one to have raced on it.
(# 1) Wesley - $450,000 son of "El Prado" was sharp in his last, a victory in an allowance at Belmont in his first start ever on the grass. He's improving quickly at this stage, is working well and draws the hedge.
(# 3) Willsboro Point - All his turf races are solid (7-4-0-2) and in his latest became a stakes winner. Astute claim by Scott Schwartz in late May has really blossomed of late. Continues to train in sharp fashion.
