Horse Racing Systems - August 03, 2008Eventhough we've decided not to include it in our selections for today, "Big Brown's" return to action is still of major interest to racing fans everywhere. He'll face six rivals in the $1,000,000 "Haskell" stakes at Monmouth Park going 1 1/8th miles. His result will determine which way his connections will decide to go as the "Breeder's Cup" grows ever nearer. He'll be a prohibitive favorite, and the risk/reward ratio is a poor one as far as wagering goes. Today we have a total of four races, three from Saratoga and one from Del Mar. Today's Best Bet is #1 Survived in Race # 7 at Saratoga. Saturday's Results: Saratoga Race # 4 Exacta (1-5) $42.00. Saratoga Race #10 Top Pick #6 (Indian Blessing) $2.80. Del Mar Race #2 Best Bet # 3 (Afleet's Design) $7.00. Today's Horse Racing Picks: (# 7) RUBENSTEIN - Good combination of a win early sire, "Lion Hearted" (17%) and a trainer (Rich Schosberg) who wins at a solid 21% with his debut runners. Colt draws a good post and has a nice series of works dating back to early May. (# 6) Rereadthefootnotes - Dam's two other foals both won during their two-year-old season. Barn (Kiaran McLaughlin) is much better second time out, but it's winning at 17% with it's debut stock. Recent gate drill on July 26, says they mean business today. (# 2) J T Moore - His sire ("Mayakovsky") set a track record here during his two-year-old season. Works are solid and the barn(Stanley Hough) traditionally unveils one or two youngsters that have talent at this meet. (# 1) Gold Prospect - Trainer (Enrique Arroyo) has had a great year with claiming stock and this is the first debut runner that he has started. Works indicate that speed is present. SARATOGA Race #SEVEN (4:10 PM Eastern) (# 1) SURVIVED - Draws the hedge and filly has a nice turn of tactical speed to use it to her advantage. Drops in class for this as the "optionals" she has been facing are tougher than these. She's won three of her last six turf starts and finished second here last season at this distance. Tough from just off the lead. (# 9) Melissa's Dream - Probable early leader brings the best speed to the contest and there really isn't a lot of other pure front-runners entered. Solid turf record (11-3-3-0), top barn (Mike Maker) and the class level is fine. Dangerous foe. (# 6) Sax in the City - Winning race at Belmont on July 11, was her best effort ever. Relatively lightly raced and she has a good mid-pack style to give her first run on the deep-closers. (# 7) Just a Little Jet - Was "tons the best" last out at Belmont as the rider got caught in a "bait and switch" tactic turning for home. Veteran turf mare was claimed that day by Carl Domino and has been freshened up for the past six-weeks. Capable at this level, she'll need some pace help to offer her best. SARATOGA Race #EIGHT (4:40 PM Eastern) (# 8) CRAZY THING - Claimed out of her maiden win two back by trainer Mike Maker for $30K, filly ran back for $40,000 in her first against winners and was involved in a fast/spirited speed duel before tiring late. Drops in half today and runs below the purchase price, so they're serious about winning. May go wire-to-wire. (# 3) Sparky's Decision - This will be her first stsrt on conventional dirt after having raced on both turf and poly. Had trouble in her return race at Belmont after shipping from So. California and she ran "sneakliy" well in that one. If the speed comes back late she could impact this at a big price. (# 6) Sorority's Sister - Drops off a return in an allowance where she raced evenly. Barn (Tony Dutrow) is strong second off a layoff (28%) and this filly has a solid local drill on July 26. (# 10) C T Phone Home - Filly showed some ability in her first go-around last fall/winter. Freshened up since mid-January, trainer (Linda Rice) is great with this type of runner (26%) and this three-year-old has been in constant training here since May. DEL MAR Race #FIVE (7:00 PM Eastern) (# 6) JACK'S KID - Sharp in his last at Hollywood Park at this price, lightly-raced gelding has a recent history of racing against and doing well against better than these. Good combination of speed/stalkng ability and he's well-spotted by a capable barn (R.B.Hess) (# 4) Scottish Diamond - Continues to run evenly in his races since coming back from a layoff. He worked very fast on this surface on July 18th and he may be an exotics player on that basis. Trainer (Art Sherman) is having an "off" year by his standards. (# 2) Kingsburg - Tries a synthetic surface for the first time. Dirt record is more than acceptable (22-5-2-4) and he is working sharply on the poly for a good barn (Dan McFarland).
