Preankess Pick - August 02, 2008Today's racing menu will feature five races, four from Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York and a single contest from Del Mar in So. California. Del Mar's handle is down quite a bit and track management may have to cut the purse structure for the last half of their meet. Today's Best Bet is #3 Afleet's Design in Race #2 at Del Mar. Friday's Results: Saratoga Race #2 Top Pick # 7 (Hope Street) $6.40. Del Mar Race #2 Best Bet # 6 (Enchanting Moment) $2.80. Today's Horse Racing Picks: (# 5) LOVELY ISLE - Filly is four-for-nine overall and her five losses have all been in stakes races. She's hinted at ability in the past and she looks like she is just coming into her own, like most Frankel fillies do later on. Gets a class test today as this is a "rugged" group. (# 6) More Happy - Talented and lightly raced. Daughter of the recently deceased "Vindication" cost a cool $1,000,000 early in her two-year-old season and looked like a bargain when she won the "Adirondack" stakes last August. Working well for her seasonal and three-year-old debut, she looks ready to go. (# 7) Irish Smoke - Latest was a positive development as she finished a strong second to "J Z Warrior" who is in today's "Test" stakes later on the card. Working well for this and her stalking ability and good post could land her in the exotics. (# 1) Porte Bonheur - Not a win candidate, but if the pace is fast/contested she could rally late into the tri at a square price. SARATOGA Race #SIX (3:35 PM Eastern) (# 1) COBRE - Raced well here in his only start at two last season. Didn't break alertly yet showed some grit when he rallied late to finish fourth. Away until July 3, at Belmont, he's also with a new trainer, Seth Benzel, a former assistant to Todd Pletcher. Showed good speed that day and just missed in a fine effort. Trainer adds blinkers for this in an attempt to get him over the top. (# 9) Can't Buy Love - Shortens up and goes third off the bench for Barclay Tagg. Excellent try two back sprinting on the Belmont turf from a poor post (11). Chased a solid pace at a mile with blinkers on last out, but came up empty late. Today he should offer his best. (# 5) Pano's Love - Shortens up after an even effort in his last travelling seven-furlongs at Belmont. Previous five at shorter distances were all strong. Contender for all the money slots. (# 8) Bullstar - Firster is from a trainer (Jimmy Toner) who specializes in developing turf horses, but rarely wins with a debut runner (0-for his last 17). Colt is working sharply and field is not a strong one. (# 7) Sophie's Splinter - Style is not the right type to win this , but his closing tactics could land him in the exotics. SARATOGA Race #SEVEN (4:05 PM Eastern) (# 9) JUST JULIAN - $1,6000,000 colt's 2008 turf debut was outstanding, as he rated while in traffic, and exploded late when in the clear. Appears to be coming into his own and he has a good turn of tactical speed to get a position from which to win from. The choice to make it two in a row. (# 5) Compromise - All four races are solid and they all came on the turf. Lightly-raced gelded son of "Point Given" has enough positional speed to not get buried early, and has a strong closing kick. (# 4) Vision of Sunrise - His turf races are solid (7-2-0-3) and he brings a good stalking style to the contest. Latest work is a fast move on the training track turf and he may sneak away at a square price. (# 1) Numaany - Beautifully-bred colt will be making his first start since a series of three races in the Middle-east this past winter. Race will be his turf debut and he draws a difficult post. Barn is patient and he may need this one. DEL MAR Race #TWO (5:30 PM Eastern) (# 3) AFLEET'S DESIGN - Claimed in mid-May by trainer Jerry Hollendorfer he immediately sent him in for two months of freshening. Returned here at the same price ($25,000), showed good gate speed and held well to finish second. Superior drill since and he's a wire-to-wire threat today. (# 7) Storm Central - Drops in half after a rough go of it his debut last April. Raced a bit head-strong and was rank before having traffic woes late. Working well for his return and barn (John Sadler) is traditionally better second time out (22%). (# 4) Sur Brio - Improved with the addition of lasix to finish third at this tag in start number two. Repeat of that effort lands him in the tri. (# 5 ) Highly Unusual - Drops off a third place finish in his second lifetime start. Good speed shown in that one and gelded son of the popular "Unusual Heat" may hit the board again. (# 1) Mark of a Pirate - May run well enough to sneak into the exotics at a big price. Barn (Ed Moger) is having an "off" year but they are still dangerous. Runner has a bit of speed to use. SARATOGA Race #TEN (5:40 PM Eastern) (# 6) INDIAN BLESSING - Last season's two-year-old filly champ showed a new dimension last out by rating early and exploding late. Race was the best that any of these have ever run and anything near a repeat would win this. Baffert trainee has a very sharp work on this dirt July 26th. (# 3) Sweet Hope - Very impressive win in a small stakes at Delaware on June 23. Race was her second on conventional dirt and both have been easy wins, the other coming at Bay Meadows. Continues her fine a.m. work and is a serious threat. (# 2) Palanka City - Filly gets a class test today as she tries for her fourth straight win. She has some very fast drills heading into this including a bullet over this surface. Horse Racing Picks Resources:
