Horse Racing Betting Pick - August 01, 2008Welcome to the month of August! In years gone by August held the four weeks of the Saratoga meeting until the 80s when the meet was "tinkered" with. This session now opens in July and ends in early September. It's still the best of all worlds from a racing fans standpoint, with excellent racing from beginning to end and all the big names, both human and equine make the "scene." Today we have a total of four races, three from the Spa and a single contest from Del Mar. A reminder that Del Mar continues it's late start on Fridays with post time at 7:00 p.m. (EST). Today's Best Bet is #6 Enchanting Moment in Race #2 at Del Mar. Thursday's Results: Saratoga Race #3 Ex. (4-6) $38.40. Saratoga Race #4 T-fecta (2-1-3) $50.00. Saratoga Race #6 Best Bet # 3 (Storming Off) $2.80. Today's Horse Racing Picks: (# 7) HOPE STREET - Drops and goes turf-to-dirt for trainer Gary Contessa. Filly is a fine combination of speed/stalking ability and raced very well in the mid-west when in the barn of Eddie Kenneally before coming east. This is the horse to beat. (# 3) Casino Kay - Strong owner/trainer combo of local businessman, Roddy Valente and veteran trainer Bruce Levine. The duo has brought many horses from So. California over the past six years. Most have been successful and this daughter of "Proud Citizen" looks like she can run a bit. This will be her first attempt on real dirt and presumably is the reason that she came here. (# 6) Onlygotaminute - Speedy filly will race with a tag on her head for the first time today. Sharp barn (Mike Trombetta) had a winner here on Wednesday and has sent others out that have been well spotted. This is a threat on the top-end. SARATOGA Race #THREE (2:05 PM Eastern) (# 3) AFLEET AYA - Bet to favoritism in her racing bow on June 27, filly showed good speed and held well to finish second. Claimed out of that effort by Dom Galluscio for $35,000, filly has a sharp local drill on July 21, and returns at the same tag today. This is celarly the horse to beat. (# 1) Last Desire - Had a wide trip in her latest at Belmont and that was off a a two-month freshening. Have a feeling that she'll run her best yet from the rail today in this less-than-stellar group. (# 4) Calling My Colors - Speedy filly will need to step it up a notch and finish better to have a shot for more than a minor award. (# 7) Judiciary - Rallied late on the dirt last out to finish an even third in her first start in a claiming race. Working well for a barn that is very low profile (Roger Horgan) but generally gets a win at this meet. Daughter of "Johannesburg" cost $115,000 so there were expectations at one time. SARATOGA Race #EIGHT (4:50 PM Eastern) (# 3) GOLDEN WEEKEND - Very impressive maiden win last out in his first start ever on the turf. Gelded son of "Golden Missle" broke running in that Belmont sprint and flew all the way home just missing the track record. He's always shown ability and appears to be coming into his own. Sharp work since the win and I think that he'll be able to stretch his speed out in this "over night" stake. (# 7) Prussian - Speedy and talented, he finished second in his last to "Gio Ponti" who won the "Virginia Derby" at Colonial Downs next out. He's stalked sucessfully in the past and that may be the way they chose to play it here. (# 1) Big Al - One of the few proven closers in this race and he draws a ground-saving post. Pace could be fast/contested and that would be a big advantage for his style. (# 8) Luck Money - Recent arrival from England won a $2,000,000 two-year-old stake last year at the Curragh in Ireland. He's only had one '08 outing before shipping and he'll run for Mr. Todd Pletcher for the first time with lasix added. DEL MAR Race #TWO (7:30 PM Eastern) (# 6) ENCHANTING MOMENT - Daughter of "Mizzen Mast" was claimed out of a strong effort last out by the Doug O'Neill barn. Chased a fast pace running for $40K, bid on the turn and fought it out to the wire losing by a 1/2 length. Filly has a "bullet" work since and is the horse to beat. (# 7) Molitta - Shortens up and drops a peg in her second start off a two-month layoff. Filly was bet to favoritism in that return run and raced between horses while contesting the pace and tired late. Big rider switch to Baze, and she's a win contender. ( # 8) Miss Lydia - Four-year-old by "Distorted Humor" closed late last out on this surface at this tag to finish second. Race was her best to date and came off almost a two month vacation.
