Preakness Stakes - January 31, 2010

Today's edition of our Racing Newsletter has a pair of races each from Aqueduct and Gulfstream.

The Best Bet is #4 Mambo Fever in Race #4 at Gulfstream Park.

Saturday's Results

Gulfstream Park Race # 8 = Exacta ( 6-4) Pd. $9.40

Gulfstream Park Race # 9 = Exacta ( 4-7) Pd. $16.60

Today's Horse Racing Picks:

AQUEDUCT Race #3 at 1:25 PM Eastern

Top pick: #1 (MARKET COLLAPSE) - She tries winners for the first time after a very sharp maiden win at Philadelphia Park on Jan.2nd. Well-bred (Eurosilver) and in a good barn (Rick Violette) filly has a "bullet" local drill on the 22nd and she draws the rail. Can "upset" the Pletcher runner.
2nd pick: #6 (Sharp Instinct) - The probable heavy favorite won here on Dec.30th in her first on dirt, first in a claimer, and first in blinkers. $275,000 daughter of "Awesome Again" has worked well since and Dominguez takes over. She'd be no surprise.
3rd pick: #5 (Roman Chestnut) - Filly will try two-turns for the first time and has shown the ability to pass other horses in her sprint efforts. Stretch threat.

GULFSTREAM PARK Race #4 at 2:40 PM Eastern
Top pick: #4 (MAMBO FEVER) - Filly showed a lot of promise last fall and is working sharply at Palm Meadows for her seasonal debut. Her trainer (Tony Dutrow) has been hot since this meet started and he and rider Jeremy Rose are clicking at a 35% rate over the past 18 months. The top selection.
2nd pick: #8 (Protesting) - Training well locally for the McGaughey barn, filly by "A.P.Indy" is another that demonstrated ability last year. Stretch threat today.
3rd pick: #7 (Lavender's Spirit) - Speed/stalker was stakes-placed at Calder last year and will get the addition of blinkers for her seasonal un-veiling. She's from a good barn (Bill White) and may try and styeal this one.
4th pick: #1 (Comic Marvel) - Fine debut last October at Belmont saw her rally from far back on a "sloppy" track to get the win. Daughter of "Distorted Humor" was with the late Bob Frankel at that time and is now with another "Hall of Famer" (Bill Mott). Threat if ready.

GULFSTREAM PARK Race #6 at 3:40 PM Eastern
Top pick: #6 (BEST ACTOR) - He was verys sharp in his maiden win here going a mile on Jan.7th and that recency edge and a big "bullet" drill since will make him very tough in his first vs. winners. He's only one of two with a race on this surface and the only one to have won on it. Right back.
2nd pick: #3 (Drosselmeyer) - Showed promise last year and is working sharply. The distance is not a problem and he's a stretch threat.
3rd pick: #2 (No Shenanigans) - In the loaded barn of Todd Pletcher and colt has plenty of two-turn experience to call upon. Woirking fast at Palm Meadows as he races for the first time since Nov.1st.
4th pick: #1 (Stately Victor) - Exits the same Nov.1st race as the Pletcher runner. Working fast on the local dirt, draws the rail, and he's in a great layoff barn (Mike Maker 24%). His inside draw is a plus.

AQUEDUCT Race #9 at 4:15 PM Eastern
Top pick: #3 (Properlyintroduced) - She raced evenly last out as the favorite checking-in 4th of 10, beaten just over a length. Probably better on the turf but she's the pick at this level on the dirt. Dominguez stays put and she can win this from just off the lead.
2nd pick: #10 (Authentic Shot) - The main speed and that makes her very dangerous. She finished a fine 2nd last out at this tag and distance in her first back off a 75 day layoff. Win candidate.
3rd pick: #11 (Cottage Industry) - Veteran has yet to crack the exacta in 17 tries so it's a testament to the overall weakness of this field that we're including her. Can pass other runners and reach the tri in this poor group.
4th pick: #1 (Margaro) - Longshot hasn't shown much but neither have many of the others. Rail is a plus and she had traffic trouble last out. Maybe for a small slice at a big price.
