Kentucky Derby Picks - August 31, 2010Saratoga is closed today and will be heading into the final week of their 40-day session tomorrow. Today we have two races apiece from Delaware and Philadelphia Park where they just returned from their annual three week summer break. Today's Best Bet is #5 Killarney Mist in Race #3 at Delaware Park. Monday's East Coast Results: Saratoga Race #2 Top Pick #5 (Hasten to be King) $7.50. Delaware Park Race #3 Best Bet #3 (Clever Ralph) $3.60. Saratoga Race #3 Top Pick #6 (Salty Lil Sis) $4.60.  Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #3 (TRILLIAN) - Mare by "Trippi" races first off a Aristone claim and a month's worth of freshening. Recent sharp work indicates she's ready to roll off the purchase. The top selection. 2nd pick: #4 (Le Tetanic) - Claimed on June 23 and freshened-up since by trainer Pete Walder, mare is training fast at Delaware for this and her trainer wins at a 30% off the claim and at 24% off of extended layoffs. Could win this. 3rd pick: #7 (Miriam's Star) - Has back class and has performed well anytime she's been at or around this price. Draws a nice post and must be left in the win mix. 4th pick: #2 (The Mule's Sister) - She doesn't have a whole lot of early speed, but has some marginal closing ability and could pass enough late to reach the same race exotic wagers. DELAWARE PARK Race #3 at 2:10 PM Eastern Top pick: #5 (KILLARNEY MIST) - Races off a three month layoff and she'll make her first start for Brad Cox following a claim in late May. Lightly-raced filly by "Orientate" looks tough for a barn that wins at a 40% rate off the claim. 2nd pick: #4 (Iris's Proverb) - Recent maiden winner had little trouble defeating a group of $10K foes last out and is smartly dropped in price for her first facing winners. Has a good late kick and has a recency edge on the top pick. Stretch threat. 3rd pick: #3 (Bossy Mo) - She's leveled off in her career and has no room for upside. That said, she's run well in all four starts at this price and can grab a slice again today with her speed/stalking ability. DELAWARE PARK Race #6 at 3:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #6 (STAR MONEY) - Very consistent sophomore runner seems to thrive on work and enters this off the two best efforts of her career. One-run type tries tougher today, but catches a small field where the pace could be fast/contested. Can upset the two favorites. 2nd pick: #5 (Lela) - Jersey shipper is in the always dangerous barn of Steve Asmussen and she brings pleny of early speed to the party. She'll be tough if she establishes an uncontested lead. 3rd pick: #4 (Bernadette's Song) - Not surprisingly she's improved a graet deal since being claimed by Juan Vazquez May 24. She's two for two since then with both wins coming in starter-allowances. Tries a tougher condition, but the field only goes three deep. Win candidate. PHILADELPHIA PARK Race #10 at 4:20 PM Eastern Top pick: #1 (HELDOVER) - Gelding makes his second start back following a long layoff and he's performed well in all of his starts on this turf (3-0-2-1). He finished an even third here June 1 and that was his first back off a 10 month layoff. Has the rail and can win this with a late surge. 2nd pick: #7 (Incisive Strike) - Has good early speed to utilize and colt by "Smart Strike" will move back to the grass after a failed try on the synthetic course at Presque Isle Downs last out. Lightly raced and in a good mid-level Maryland barn (Ann Merryman). Win threat. 3rd pick: #5 (Achilles Quest) - Very wide here July 25 colt has some speed and has finished second twice in six grass starts. Will need his best for any shot at toppling the top pair. 4th pick: #4 (Prince of Fairness) - He finished second here June 19 in a $25K maiden claimer on the grass and that came off a Nov. 9 layoff.
