The one rule for making NBA playoff picks & predictions against the spread

If you want one overriding rule when making NBA picks, it should be to simplify your approach. There are some things that matter in the NBA and other things that don’t. All too often, handicappers get far too caught up in trying to handicap based upon five year trends or other such factors. In reality, they would be much better off if they just kept it simple and understood the psychology behind the game. Find those teams that are motivated, and make your NBA picks on them. If you can get a motivated squad against a group that is just mailing it in, you’ll do well over the course of a season.

This is especially true as you enter the playoff run, when it becomes a little bit harder to make NBA picks. Veteran teams tend to put people away when they have to, and they like to send a message in home games. Is there a superior squad that is coming home in a 2-2 series? That is the side you want to make your NBA picks on. They’ll be looking to send a message to the league and their opponent, and you’re likely to get an inspired effort.

Obviously you don’t want to take these rules as the gospel, and each game demands its own handicapping attention. Still, this is something you have to dedicate yourself to looking for. Those people who make successful NBA picks do so because they are backing teams who have something to play for. Even in the playoffs, there will be nights when you will get yourself into a lot of trouble by backing a squad that just is not ready to play. Don’t let this happen to you, and keep your NBA picks on the sharp side, not the square side.
