The NBA is a lot about hype. Players get hyped. Teams get hyped. What this leads to is a situation where some teams are overvalued. Their lines become inflated and people want to bet them. As a smart bettor, you have to be on the lookout for this before you make those NBA picks. You have to be able to spot when things are getting a bit out of hand on one player or another.

A perfect example is Jeremy Lin. In 2012, the guy is getting a ton of attention on the strength of one good week. People are comparing Lin to the best players in the NBA. Does this mean the Knicks will be overvalued for an extended period of time? It may or may not mean this, but this factor is something worth keeping in mind.
