Wunderdog’s 2011 Top 25 Part One: No. 25-11
25. UCLA
What could have been, has turned a bit more “iffy” for the Bruins. Tyler Honeycutt and Malcolm Lee have both decided to make early departures for the NBA. The cupboard is far from bare however, as the Uclan’s return arguably one of the deepest frontcourts in the country. The frontcourt remains intact, and this year the Ware twins, who transferred from North Carolina, become eligible. If there are concerns that make this team a borderline Top 25 choice, it is in the backcourt where the trio of Jones, Lamb and Anderson all have to step it up. The Bruins are solid up front, and if the backcourt disappoints, they will slip out of the Top 25. If they surprise they will be much better.
24. CINCINNATI
The Bob Huggins era at Cincinnati was both troubling and exciting, as the Bearcats were always good under his watch. The program dropped off, but is back on the rise under the coaching of Mick Cronin. The good news is that the Bearcats played tough again a year ago, and have their top four scorers returning for 2011-12, in what should be a highly-competitive and deep Big East. Throw in some court-readied recruits on campus this fall, and Coach Cronin will have the Bearcats playing tough, exciting and at a high level of basketball – good enough for a spot in the Top 25.
23. XAVIER
The Xavier Musketeers seem to always find their way into the rankings. This is a team that has established a national reputation and despite losses, or returnees, they always seem to be there. This year is no different. Those chances improved when Tu Hollaway tested the NBA waters, but decided to return to Xavier, making them the odds-on favorite to reign supreme in the A-10 once again. Most have this team pegged higher, but although they do return their top three scorers, they lost a lot of depth with a couple of transfers. They are still a talented team and is worthy of Top 25 consideration.
22. TEMPLE
Xavier is penciled in early as the team to beat in the A-10, but don’t count out the Owls. They return four of their five starters and are coming off a successful campaign a year ago. The owls are deep and talented where it counts the most – in the backcourt. They have three interchangeable parts in Fernandez, Wyatt and Moore, and if they get some surprises inside, this team is going to be right there with the Musketeers in March. That should make the A-10 exciting, and Temple should be a Top 25 team when all is said and done.
21. MICHIGAN
It has been awhile since the Fab Five arrived on campus, but the Wolverines have plenty of upside with their 2011-12 version. If Darius Morris stuck around instead of bolting for the NBA, this would be a team worthy of Top 10 consideration. They almost knocked Duke out in the second round of the Big Dance a year ago. Outside of Morris, everyone else returns. While Morris has left behind big shoes to fill, there is plenty of talent and experience for the Wolverines to make some noise. This is a sleeper team for sure and if everything breaks right, they could be a factor in the Big-10 come March.
20. ALABAMA
Alabama really thought their resume was good enough a year ago for an NCAA Tourney bid, but they landed on the wrong side of the bubble. They did however take advantage of their NIT opportunity where they finished runner-up. This year, they should be the best of the West in the SEC, and clearly on the right side of the bubble. Mitchell, Releford and Green were the Tide’s go-to trio a year ago and the top three scorers are all back for 2011-12. If the Tide gets a surprise amongst recruits and bench players, they could develop into a Top 10 or 15 team.
19. GONZAGA
Gonzaga used to be the potential Cinderella with every NCAA Tournament. That label has long been left behind as the Zags seem to be here every single year. Once again the Top 25 would not be complete without them. The talent and experience level here is never in question or doubt, but this year the difference maker will be the play of their backcourt. If they can find more answers than problems from the backcourt, the Bulldogs will once again find their way solidly in the Top 25.
18. MARQUETTE
Marquette seems to be a teaser team. They play hard every single night – a credit to their coach Buzz Williams. A couple of years ago looked like their best team in a while, but last year he took them all the way to the sweet 16 with less talent. Williams has established himself as a Big East coach, and is bringing Marquette back into national viability. They bring back a pair of top players in Darius Johnson-Odom, and Jae Crowder. Although this high of a ranking in the Top 25 may be robust, don’t underestimate the ability of Williams on the sidelines to squeeze out more than the sum of the parts.
17. WASHINGTON
The Huskies took a blow when Isaiah Thomas opted for the NBA, but the cupboard is far from bare in Husky-land. They do return top players in Abdul Gaddy whose season was cut short because of injury a year ago, but he is talented enough to become a star. Terrence Ross has a tremendous upside, and could have a breakout season from the wing. The Huskies are also excited about Tony Wroten Jr. an incoming freshman that should be one of the top newcomers in the Pac-12. Washington has some pieces and great upside, and if Wroten is as good as advertised the Huskies will be deserving of this ranking.
16. FLORIDA
The Gators have a couple of Championships under Coach Donovan. If NCAAB is a guard-based game, then the Gators have the goods. There are five guards here on the roster with three solid holdovers, a freshman, and a Rutgers transfer that give Coach Donovan a lot to be excited about. The key for Florida will be the maturation of Patrick Young on the interior, and finding pieces that fit to fill-in for departures. If the Gators find some answers inside, they will rise into the Top 10, but for now are planted firmly in the middle of the Top 25.
15. BAYLOR
It looked as though the Bears were going to lose the services of do-everything Perry Jones to the NBA. Jones made a surprising decision to return to Baylor, and that immediately elevates the Bears from a top 30-35 team into the top 15. The Bears like to zone opponents, and will again have some length to make shots challenged from all areas of the court. The Bears will need consistency from long range and will have to get steady PG play to deserve the ranking, but the talent and athleticism are not in question. This team could play themselves out of the Top 25, or higher into it as there is a lot of room in both directions.
14. VILLANOVA
The biggest enemy for the Wildcats may be the league they play in. The Big East is going to be a war as usual every night, but there is plenty of talent and experience here for the Wildcats to make a run. Puzzling late season collapses the last two seasons have Jay Wright under the microscope. The Wildcats have a talented PG and a blossoming big man – two key ingredients for success in college basketball, and a large pool of talent to get some exciting surprises. The Cats need to finish like they start and if they do, the Big East will not have an easy game facing Villanova, and a run deep into the tournament is not out of the question.
13. ARIZONA
Arizona looked like a team that could win it all a year ago, but they drew the short straw playing last year’s Champion, and team of destiny UConn to bow out late. They will definitely miss Derrick Williams, but everything else is back in place. They also have a year of experience under their belts. The recruiting class was very solid, giving the Wildcats a lot of depth. If they get the existing talent and newcomers to gel, this could be a team that elevates into the Top 10 and plenty dangerous come March. They should certainly be poised to be the top team to chase in the Pac-12 this season.
12. KANSAS
Many think that this could be the year that Kansas isn’t chasing another Big-12 title, but I think we have seen Bill Self able to bring a lot of young taken quickly together. Last year’s team saw many defections and graduations, only to establish a new identity and very good team. We see that this roster has a lot of new faces, scary for most, but Self has proven when all is said and done the title chase is going to include his team in 2011-12. Like last year, and many other at Kansas, this team replaces talent with equal talent, and the coach makes it work.
11. WISCONSIN
Bo Ryan’s teams never look gaudy, athletic, or talent-laden, but his teams have never finished worse than fourth in the Big-10 since he arrived in Wisconsin 10 years ago. This team plays what most would consider an ugly style, as defense is the leading aspect of what he brings to the court. He does return a solid backcourt and will need some help stepping up in the front court, but Ryan always seems to find the answers, so why should this year be any different. Expect Bo Ryan’s Wisconsin team to be knocking on the door to the Top 10 once again.
