NBA Season Preview: San Antonio Spurs (NBA Picks)

They may be one year older and one year closer to starting an extensive rebuilding process, but the San Antonio Spurs are one of the most resilient teams in the NBA today as they seem to defy the odds every single season and make it into the playoffs.

This season the San Antonio Spurs will try and defy the odds once again as they will be contending with the likes of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Dallas Mavericks and the defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference.

Obviously, the Spurs are no longer that dominant team that everyone used to fear in the West and was favored in NBA picks every single night, but they are still a force to be reckoned with as they do have the All-Star veterans like Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili to mentor the youngster like DeJuan Blair, George Hill and rookie phenom Tiago Splitter.

There is no question this team will have their work cut out for them in the West once again, but with a good young core of players and the veteran leadership, the Spurs could be a sleeper pick to come out of the West.

Are second half bets in college & NFL really profitable?

More and more sportsbooks are offering bets on the second half of college football games. When you think about making these college football picks, you have to change your method of thinking. NFL Week 8: Packers vs Jets NFL Picks & Predictions vs the Spread

Green Bay Packers @ New York Jets Sun. Oct. 31^st 1pm EST

The Green Bay Packers are coming off arguably their biggest win of the season thus far as they were finally able to get the best of Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings at Lambeau Field. Even though they may have jumped one of the biggest hurdles of the season by beating their division rivals at just the right time, things will only get more difficult from here on out as they will face Rex Ryan’s New York Jets in Week 8.

At this point in time it is uncertain who the favorite in this game will be, but chances are the 5-1 Jets will be favored in NFL picks as they are arguably the best team in the NFL coming into Week 8 with both a potent offense led by second-year quarterback Mark Sanchez and lockdown defense led by superstar cornerback Darrelle Revis.

Even though the Packers might be able to test the Jets defense, Green Bay will almost certainly fall in Week 8 as they are dealing with multiple injury problems that I believe will keep them from beating a team like the Jets.

The Denver Nuggets basically stood pat in the off-season, but one loss is looming large, as they don’t appear able to sign Carmelo Anthony and that will really hurt them. This may be the Nuggets’ last chance to do something special. They have the PG in Billups, the strength in Nene, and Martin if they are healthy, to duplicate last year’s 53 wins. They also may have some inspirationl motivation with Coach karl battling cancer. The elements are there for success, and if this group realizes the sand is running through the hourglass, and steps up for 82 gams, thy could find themselves on a par with the Lakers, but it will take good health, and everything they have to do it.

OUTLOOK
This team was at rock bottom less than two years ago and off to a 2-27 start. Presto! Good draft picks, a superstar player and they are now becoming a bonafide contender as their young talent matures and comes of age. Scott Brooks has done a great job getting all the young talent on the same page, and the upside here is tremendous with Kevin Durant leading the way. If they can keep their corps of young, talented players growing and in tact, this team is going to be making a lot of noise in the NBA in the near future. They have the potential to grow from the 50 wins a year ago  to a threat come April.

UTAH

OUTLOOK
Jerry Sloan has survived 23 years as a head coach in Utah. Many thought that when Malone and Stockton departed, he should too, in order to preserve his legacy. Most thought that Utah would fall off the mp, but not true. Last year they went on to win 53 games, and the outlook is bright to equal that this year. Carlos Boozer moves on, but Utah steals Al Jefferson from Minnesota - a younger player with a higher ceiling and legit star power. Deron Willias is in the arguement of being the best point guard in the NBA, so the Jazz have that inside-out magic once again. I would not be surprised to see the Jazz back in the 50+ win column once again this season.

OUTLOOK
If you’re the Portland Trailblzers you have to feel confident that you can increase the win total from the 50 won just a year ago. This team was beset with multiple key injuries to star players, that reached seven deep into the roster, yet they still managed to come away with 50 wins. Based on that, this team can certainly add some to the win column, but it remains to be seen if they can stay healthy. They have proved to be an above average NBA team with health issues, so if they can manage to stay healthy this season they can approach the 60-win mark, and be a legit contender to dethrone the Lakers.

MINNESOTA

OUTLOOK
Questions abound as to what this team is doing. They drafted two point gaurds last year in the first 10 picks of round one. They then shipped their only star quality player in Al Jefferson to Utah, with what appears to be much less in return. This team has a lot of potentially good young players but they are far from ready to make an impact that can be measured in a playoff appearance. That leaves this franchise bottled in mediocrity until they establish a firm direction. This team won all of 15 games a year ago, and even with the maturation of young players, a hole has been left inside and for them to reach 20-25 wins would be an achievement.

What does a coin flip have in common with the Cowboys and Chargers?

The Dallas Cowboys and San Diego Chargers were considered Super Bowl contenders at the start of the year. They now sit collectively at 3-8. Two cities are collectively on suicide-alert and many sports bettors are perplexed. Are these just bad teams that were never deserving of the preseason praise? Possibly. But I think it’s probably something different.

I belive these two teams are much better than they appear and have largely been victims of mostly random bad luck. I know, most of you are going to decry me a numbskull for a statement like that. That’s fine. I may be wrong. But I may be right!

Yes, I know both of these teams have perennial whipping boys at coach. I won’t argue that Norv Turner and Wade Phillips are great coaches. They both have demonstrated that they can lose games for their teams. Neither seems to have the fire-and-brimstone approach that we associate with great coaches.

But, are they the sole reason these teams have so radically underperformed expectations? I don’t think so. I think they have contributed to the problem, but there’s got to be something more at play here. Six games into the season, I might attribute one extra loss to each of these guys, but at 3-8, there is something else at play here.
