They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. So what’s with those nutty cats over at Indiana?
I may not be the only one on the Interwebs taking crazy pills, but at least I can see a whole mess of issues coming down the pike. So when IU hired Kelvin Samson as their head coach, more than a few eyebrows were raised – my unkempt forehead warmers included. But that wasn’t the looney part.
The crazy part of this story came when IU officials announced that the same Samson was under investigation for being the same Samson. This is the guy that got Oklahoma under NCAA sanctions for making improper phone calls to recruits. So big shocker when the same charges turned up at IU right? They should have seen this coming a mile away.
Instead IU officials scrambled about and dangled the axe over Samson’s head for a week while they sorted this thing out. The reality is that Samson is and was no longer fit to coach a college program and IU should have never hired him in the first place without understanding that. There are too many rules and regulations to keep a program on the up-and-up and Samson doesn’t want to play ball with the NCAA.
This whole situation is like buying a boat with a gaping hole in the hull, only to complain when your boat sinks. But what is sinking here is not just some second-hand two-man tuna boat. What are now sinking are the hopes for a serious IU run into the NCAA Tournament. And if your NCAA basketball picks include IU, you may want to reconsider. IU is now a ship without a captain and unfortunately, could find themselves floundering in a sea of NIT also-rans.
So how does IU rectify this situation? The players have continued to support Samson, and they should – I mean what’s an extra 5,000 calls between coach and recruit? And there has been talk about a Knight in shining armor returning to the IU program. Bobby Knight who recently resigned from his head-coaching job at Texas Tech could be a fit. I thought that the timing of Knight’s resignation was a little too close in the timeline of the Samson investigation to be coincidence. I thought they opened the door for Knight and aired the Samson transgressions to make the transition easier. But a coaching switch to Knight sometime in the near future might make sense.
Knight brought glory to the IU program without scandal, NCAA violations, and he graduates a helluva lot of his players. Knight also won National Championships and captained a perfect, undefeated season. So if IU wants to repeat any action in hopes of having the same result, hiring Knight as head coach might not be such a crazy idea.
